NAME Pallas Castanides
GENDER Female
AGE 24
RACE Lamia
HOMETOWN Sasanka
OCCUPATION Would-be member of the Offensive Magic Division of the Asterion League. Though most who know her could be forgiven for thinking that Pallas has always been a professional gossip and dilettante, she once trained to be an appraiser as part of the family business. Trading in stolen jewelry is still a very lucrative "hobby" for her, particularly since it's hard for most pirate wares to get into Aschere.

APPEARANCE
Body - Height has less meaning for Lamia than for most races, but Pallas usually slithers at around 5"11, and can rear up to nearly 6"4 on her tail without overbalancing herself. She is a fairly large for her family and unabashedly curvy (by which I mean that she's more of a Marilyn Monroe than a Kate Moss), with slightly visible musculature. Her serpent half is based off of the venomous coral snake.

Face - Pallas has large features, including a rather prominent nose. (Like Bipasha Basu, but with a much darker skin tone.) Her eyes are heavy-lidded, with slit pupils and light yellow irises.

Hair - Thick, black, and wavy. Usually tied back with a brightly-colored scarf.

Clothing - Like many Lamia, Pallas enjoys bright colors and gaudy patterns, and she's taken to wearing shocking shades of orange that compliment her tail. She has a nose ring, dangly earrings, and a large collection of bracelets. While Pallas' tops are usually little better than sports bras, the island clime is less pleasant for her than Sasanka's blistering heat, and she often resorts to tying hipscarves around her waist and wearing heavy shawls in a vain attempt to retain heat. Her Sasanka background shows in her clothing choices.

HISTORY
The House of Castanides is a minor tributary branch of the Lamian royal family. It traces its descent from Halkyone Castanides, the current Matron's elderly aunt. The Castanides were dispatched to Furud decades ago, to relay the directives of the Matron to the small population of Lamia there. Since then they've languished in what they consider an isolated backwater, separated from the large Lamian population to the north - never mind that they travel between very large human colonies.

Pallas Castanides was born in the small Lamian district of Sasanka, and spent most of her childhood traveling back and forth from Sasanka to Camacho. Her parents and siblings make a living buying stolen gems and antiques from Camacho pirates who have no idea of their value, marking up the price, and then reselling them for a small fortune in Sasanka. For this reason they have more in the way of material wealth than the vast majority of Lamians. This causes political friction, with other branches of the royal family to derisively suggesting that the Castanides have "gone native" from too many years living away from the heart of Lamian culture.

A healthy chunk of the Castanides fortune is hoarded and buried in a secret location, but they spend the bulk of their money on expensive clothing, luxury goods, and lavish parties. Pallas was content to go along with this lifestyle until she hit her twenties. Then she succumbed to the strange and terrible disease known as boredom. The parties were all the same. The travels never ceased. Her family talked and talked, but the intrigues were never new. Pallas had a long string of short-term relationships in an attempt to shake her feelings of dissatisfaction, none of which were very fulfilling. After an extremely combative love affair with a traveller from Mithridates, Barnabas Nikolaou, she abandoned the idea of settling down and raising her own brood - an almost unheard-of decision in Lamian society.

That was when Pallas began to turn a little eccentric by Lamian standards.

She started going out to the desert. She wandered off into the human districts alone. She studied old magics with Halkyone - earth magics of the sort that had once sheltered their people when they still lived in primitive shallow burrows. It was (and is) Pallas' hope that by gaining magical power she can finally find a sense of purpose in her life, something to provide the thrill she's missing and cure her of her jadedness. Halkyone's ambitions for her are less clear.

One day Pallas announced to her family that she was going to Aschere to improve her skills. To the surprise of nearly everyone involved, Halkyone granted her permission to go. She is now petitioning for acceptance into the ranks of the Asterion League.

Since Lamia so rarely travel alone, Guild members may assume that Pallas left her clan and travelled to Murzim because she is some sort of exile, dissident, or criminal. This is not actually the case. Most of her family would love it if their mad prodigal daughter would come back to her senses and return home.

PERSONALITY
Pallas is loud, outgoing, and opinionated. She's spent a lot of time both on the road and in large, developed cities, and thus considers herself more cosmopolitan and urbane than most of those around her. The fact that Pallas is apparently only in the League on a lark can make it seem as though she doesn't take her work very seriously, especially since she responds to most dangerous situations with exaggerated bravado. She can come off as a bit of a flake and a dabbler, although her ambitions are anything but aimless, and underneath the cooing and the air-kisses there lies a rather clever mind.

In case it wasn't clear from the history section, Pallas' idea that power can make her content is not all that emotionally healthy.

Both friends and enemies of Pallas can expect her to meddle in their personal lives as a matter of course - not so much because she has things to gain from it, but because she seems to believe that the League was created solely for her personal amusement. That said, Pallas is friendly, condescends to be helpful to others, and is open to trying almost anything once. She's a wealthy hedonist, but no snob about enjoying low-class pursuits so long as they are new and/or interesting.

Pallas has almost no concept of personal space, and is a very huggy, touchy-feely person. This may partly be because she enjoys watching the silly bipeds squirm. Persons who dislike physical contact are advised to find some stairs.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE
- Hails from the southern continent.
- Sells jewelry on the side for profit. Who knows where she gets it from?
- Is constantly writing and receiving letters, to the annoyance of those who have to put up with messenger birds flying in and out of her rooms at odd hours.
- Has a disconcerting habit of swallowing her dinner whole.
- Has a lot of shady acquaintances who hang around at the dockyards.

DIVISION Offensive Magic
CLASS PROGRESSION Pharmakheia > Gorgon > Ekhidna

Pharmakheia - Pallas is a novice in Lamian Earthcraft, having studied the old traditions under an elderly matriarch. Her efforts are still clumsy and slow, and her concentration is easily broken.

That said, this is still a woman who can hit you in the face with boulders.

At this stage Pallas still wears a heavy shawl around her shoulders, in a vain attempt to ward off the cold. Other than that, her attire consists of a decorated bra top (like this), a hip scarf (like this except in dark orange and gold), and a lot of impractical jewelry. Her hair hangs partly in her face, while her nails are long, clawlike, and painted a violent shade of scarlet.

Melee ( 2 ) Ranged ( 0) Magic ( 3 )

Gorgon - Pallas gains in dexterity and spiritual power, acquiring the muscle memory to accurately direct her attacks. She begins to feel a more spiritual connection to the earth, but it threatens to overwhelm her.

At this stage she sheds her shawl for long sleeves that are attached to her upper arms by decorated bands. Her hair is pulled back more securely out of her face, she's lost the hip-scarf, and her bra has become a bustier. Pallas begins to wear bolder makeup in order to compensate for this loss of flash. A few gold chains still circle her belly where the hip scarf once rested.

Melee ( 3 ) Ranged ( 0 ) Magic ( 7 )

Ekhidna - Pallas begins to feel soil and stone as an extension of herself, and gains fine control where she was once only able to move large clumps of earth.

Pallas' top extends down over her hips, and she starts wearing a wide belt to hold potions and healing items. Her nails are cut short - she's broken too many on the battlefield - but they're still brightly painted. She begins wearing her hair in tight curls which are reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman hairstyles. Maybe some other changes I haven't thought up yet. It's hard to completely foresee how characters will develop.

Melee ( 3 ) Ranged ( 0 ) Magic ( 12 )

SPECIAL SKILLS

Racial Skill - Snakebite (Poison)
Painful, poisonous bite.
Continued damage to HP over one, two, or three rounds, depending on job level. Damage is -3/-6/-9 depending on level. One use per battle.

Level One Skill - Attack Multiple Targets
Pallas' attacks multiple targets using her magic. -2 penalty to total per additional enemy targeted.

Level Two Skill - Great Wall (Shield Summon)
Pallas summons a large stone wall, creating her very own custom bunker with whatever materials are at hand. +10 HP bonus at level 2, +15 HP bonus at level 3. One use per battle. Does not work when not on land.

Level Three Skill - Stone Coils (Positive Stat Effect [Self])
Pallas' serpent half gains the lustre of granite, as she melds with the earth for a temporary attack bonus.
Lasts three turns. One use per battle. +9 magic, +3 melee, -3 evade

Narrative Skill - Earth Sense
Pallas can sense the movements of anything on or within the ground by feeling the vibrations of the earth along her tail, regardless of whether it's in her line of sight. Apparently this is something that some snakes can actually do! The radius of this effect increases with her level, as her earth magic strengthens the sense (it should start at around twenty meters or so).

Magic Attack Style - Earthcraft
Pallas attacks by entering a state of meditative concentration, and directing the motion of the earth with stylized movements of her tail, which resemble a sort of stylized dance or martial arts kata and direct the earth's energy to move soil and stone. This is loosely based off of Toph Bei Fong's Earthbending ability in "Avatar: The Last Airbender".

WEAPON All the weapon that Pallas needs is herself.
LEVEL One
POINT ASSIGNMENT Melee ( 2 ), Ranged ( 0 ), Magic/Other ( 3 )
HIT POINTS 25 >> 35 >> 40
EVADE 10 >> 14 >> 18

I love your profile! You've got some great ideas! Keep it up, dude. heart

Your skill entomb, though, I think needs to be a bit weakened. I would say either keep just the damage or the evade hit, but not both. If you do want to keep both effects, I suggest maybe making it into a randomizer where a certain dice number will either cause - to evade or damage.

Thanks!

I was trying to think of a more offensive skill for Level Three, as opposed to another buff, since someone who fights by throwing boulders at you should generally be a heavy hitter. But the system for setting up buffs is more developed in the battle skills FAQ? I'm not sure what would be reasonable for a one-time, high-damage attack.

I'm probably suggest Positive Stat Effect (Self-Only) as a way of doing larger damage. We don't have a standard skill for a one-time big damage aside from being pre-buffed. I'll talk to EK about it. DX

Okay! I tried to create a skill like that which would be reasonable, although I'm unsure if the evade penalty I put in place should be higher.

Er. Seeking approval now, I suppose!

Any thoughts on how I could improve this are still always welcome.

I saw you mention in another thread that you thought Pallas overlapped with one of the staff examples. I'm going to assume you're referring to Amélien and while there are some similarities between the two concepts, I consider them pretty superficial.

We like this concept a lot, so we hope that you won't abandon it. 3nodding

Aludramule strikes again! Thank you kindly, sir. 3nodding

Hee - and just as I was settled on apping for my other character.

Pallas was actually created before I read the staff examples, so I was surprised to discover the similarities between her andand the stylish Monsieur Amelien (wealthy background, Sasanka, earth-related magics, etc). I thought it might be an issue, but if it's not... hm. I guess now I have a choice to make. xd

There are similarities, but the characters themselves have distinctly different feelings to me. Amélien is more of a British colonists in Egypt sort of thing; that is, he's very out of place and basically transplanting the Esprevere culture to a small area of Sasanka. I dunno. The characters just read differently to me and what similarities they share could be something for them to talk about. xd

Point, xd . The Castanides are more assimilationist than colonial. Largely because their matriarch has been pissed off about being sent there for the last seventy years or so.

If Pallas were made aware of their similarities she would probably be happy to hear about home, consult her astrologist, and decide that Amelien is is her new BFF. Then she'd set about horribly corrupting him. ("Oh, darling, haven't you ever been to one of those stripping clubs? Dance of the seven veils? Oh, we MUST go. They have the most fabulous liquor drinks and humans are so funny when they worked up about pants. *manhandles Amelien into a carriage and off to the wrong side of the tracks*")
