This is a journal for D-chan to use as she coaxes her Fenthries out of their feathers and has lots of fun adventures with them. Please don't post here unless D-chan has given you permission! Kurenai It looks like having a younger brother to help take care of, along with the attention and love of her owner and her relationships with the other fenthries, have all worked together to help mature this fenthry. She now stands at just over six inches in height, but her ruby fur still shines in the light and her personality is still just as bright. Koe The pastel fenthry pulls out of the fox-girl's hand and floats up into the air, twirling rapidly as it ascends and gaining speed as it descends. A few feet above the ground the feather is enveloped in light and a small pale blue child just over four inches tall tumbles to the ground. Kaju As the feather is placed on the table, it stands straight up for a moment before taking off into the air. The barb twirls round and round in the air, glowing softly before it explodes from within. A tiny bunny fenthry tumbles out of the starburst to the table, sommersaulting once before coming to rest on her stomach, ears flopping over her eyes.

::~ D-chan Spiro ~::
-- No Image Available --D-chan is a half-fox, half-human author and artist living up in the mountains with her slowly growing family. Little is known about her history, but for the fact that she was a member of a band of eight in a school that no one knows the name of. Then again, no one asks many questions, so it's to be expected that she has a rather enigmatic past...
D-chan is the caretaker of three fenthries and the assistant of the Fenthry Preservation Society, which had fallen into disrepair during a rather mysterious and extended absence. The fox-girl is back, though, and trying to make ammends. She now has another position as the assistant of the Lilts shop.
Kind-hearted and spirited, the fox halfling almost always seems to be wearing a bright smile. Anger hardly seems in her emotional repertoire, but when she gets angry, watch out! Rarely will she go for ear-piercing screams, but her mannerisms take a sudden change and her actions take a sudden turn for the harsh side. No need to worry too much, though. Her patience rarely wears thin.::~ Rai no Kaen ~::
D-chan's second "pet," Rai no Kaen (Kaen for short) grew up around fenthries. Though, at that time, he was much smaller...but even now he is very gentle around all things smaller than himself, knowing how fragile they tend to be from first-hand experience with his miniature house mates. Strong-willed, compassionate, and fun-loving, the sparieh enjoys the company of fenthries and sparieh alike...not to mention songfoxes, though he can't understand them for the life of him. His favorite food is the one vegetable D-chan cannot stand: carrots. Perhaps those orange tubers are the reason he grew into the first male sparieh elder...ah, well. His favorite fenthry is Kurenai. ::~ Ao Hoshizora ~::
Ao Hoshizora (Hoshi for short) was D-chan's second sparieh, a gift from her friend Ivory following the hatching of a recent clutch of eggs. The daughter of a nightmare sparieh (hence the dark coloring) and a scarf-lover (hence the scarf), Hoshi strikes most as...rather eccentric, due to her habit of nibbling on anything and everything in reach, including table legs, soap bars, and people. Or fenthries. Though she often seems cold around outsiders, more because of personal assumptions about outside assumptions due to her nature due to her heritage (she thinks other people think she's evil), she is quite warm and kind to those in her family. Her favorite fenthry is Koe. ::~ Orange Sherbert ~::
The youngest of D-chan's three spariehs, Orange Sherbert (or just plain Sherbert) was yet another gift from Ivory following another hatching. The daughter of a moth-winged sparieh and a Pikachu sparieh, there is speculation that she will inherit her mother's wings...luckily, she hasn't inherited her mother's mischievous nature! Sherbert is often confused, being so new to the world, and at times seems like something of a ditz because of it. Even so, she is quite happy with who she is...though, who that is, exactly, no one really knows as of yet. Her favorite fenthry is Kaju.::~ Danyeh and Grei ~::
-- No Image Available --Danyeh and Grei are relatively new to the household. A pair of songfoxes (foot tall fox halflings with wings), they appeared soon after the first of their kind was transferred to Jessie-kat as a friendly gift of affection...and just in the nick of time to keep Kurenai out of some serious trouble. Danyeh is the brighter, cheerier songfox of the pair. He always seems to have a smile on his face and a song on his lips, completely defying the dark nature seemingly hinted at in his black hair and wings. Grei, on the other hand, is more of the strong, silent type. He prefers to sit back and watch events, interfering only when absolutely necessary. Though not cruel, his cold nature seems hard to place considering his silver hair and white wings. But what's done is done. Though they do seem to be a rather strange pair, they are the best of friends. Their favorite fenthry is Kurenai.::~ Kurayami ~::
Doubtless the most enigmatic member of the family, Kurayami (Kura for short) is rarely seen. She seems more like a vague presence much of the time, a secret that D-chan keeps to herself the vast majority of the time. Why? Who knows. Even so, she seems to be growing bolder as the days pass, and perhaps one day she will continually grace the halls of the fox-girl's home. She has no favorite fenthry.::~ Chevyo ~::
At the moment, Chevyo is still an egg, so little can be said about him...but like Kurayami, he is a Guardian of Gaia. In that respect, we at least know what he will be when he hatches. Another new addition!! Hi no Arashi (Arashi for short) is Kaen's first daughter with Sayuri. Arashi...is rather troublesome and seems determined to do D-chan in by tripping her and making her crack her skull or break her neck. Thank heavens Hoshi can keep her in line...Arashi also borders on cannibalistic, as her favorite food is chicken. And another addition to the household! Keiei the sarling is about as quiet and mysterious as Kurayami, but markedly more outgoing than the nocturnal guardian. Unfortunately, little else can be said about her until more is known. Her favorite fenthry appears to be Koe.

::% Gifts %::
This wonderful gift was Kurenai's first, from Maru and her fenthry Kaju. It has now served as the bed for three fenthries, and hopefully it will continue to prove useful for other little creatures in the future. Another lovely gift from Maru! Boy, they'll get spoiled if this keeps up. This time a brooch with feathers patterned like Kurenai and Koe. Even though D-chan is not prone to wearing jewelry, this still holds a place close to her heart. Though still from Marushii's household, this gift is not directly from the kitsune. This was from Maya to Koe. Shy as he is, Koe was touched and decided to make a swan for Maya in return. Guess who this is from? Yep, another one from Maya. After being attacked by Sakura in the shop, Koe began to have terrible nightmares. This dream catcher helps to keep them away. This was found out on the porch one morning...it appears to be a drawing of Kurenai! Perhaps from Rioko? It's a Kurenai plushie!! Another gift from Pirate and Rioko, perhaps...? No one ever did find out what was in this box from Sakura... This gift was not for any of the fenthries, but rather for D-chan. This cell-phone from Owyln allows her to keep in touch with all other fenthry owners who have one. The fox-girl has an unhealthy obsession with the little yellow pom-pom... Another gift from Owyln, this one is addressed to Koe. This was his very first gift from another fenthry owner...needless to say, he's quite attached to this day. These adorable little puppies started out looking like gum drops! There was one for both Kurenai and Koe, as can be easily seen just by their colorations. This gift from May came for Kurenai not long after she hatched! Such a cute little penguin...it lives along with all of the fenthry's other plush treasures: where it's easily reached on her personal end-table. This gift from Foenix came for Kurenai soon after she hatched. Now that she has outgrown, her pegasus sarnin, the fenthry takes to sleeping here with her songfox friends.

::^ Visitors and Friends ^:: Tenera is one of two fenthries belonging to one of D-chan's closest friends, Jessie-kat. Tenera is rather shy, but she and Kurenai get along remarkably well.
Viridis is the other fenthry belonging to Jessie-kat. A technogeek through and through, he is very extroverted...and, though he scared Koe, Kurenai seems to like him quite a bit.
Molly is the fenthry belonging to Owyln, a friend of D-chan's and Jessie-kat's new husband. Molly is too shy to get close to Kurenai, and Koe himself has anxiety problems around other fenthries, so a friendship is tenuous at best.
Until very recently, Kurenai and Rioko were an "item." Unfortunately, after Kurenai's extended absence, Rioko has changed dramatically, so much so that Kurenai told him that, unless he changed, she could not see him anymore. He brushed it off, but the ruby fenthry has taken it much harder...
Midie herself is unfamiliar with either Kurenai, Koe, or Kaju at this point in time. Her younger "sister," Joyce, on the other hand, is good friends with both Koe and Kaju (Joyce image pending).

Thursday, June 17th, 2004; 5:49 PM The first page of a new journal. I wonder how many people think of the possible significance of such a thing. Perhaps I'm just being strange when I think about such odd things...but I see the first page of a journal as a new beginning, a new life...
A new beginning with a new life.
I hope that's how this journal will be for me. The new beginning of my life with my little fenthry. She doesn't have a name yet, but she reminded me so much of a good friend of mine that I couldn't resist giving her a nickname. And so my fenthry, until she can choose a name for herself, is Kurenai.
A note I should make here in the beginning of my journal. In the past, I have been notorious for abandoning journals early on. And I can name the examples! When I was seven I got a cute little unicorn diary. Barely five pages were filled before it was lost somewhere in the junk pile that was my room. Then there was the dream journal. At least that one gets a bit more attention, perhaps because I've gotten older and a bit more consistent, but even so it only has a few entries every year, skipping many nights of vivid dreaming.
But, as I said, I hoped that this would be a new start for me. And with Kurenai to remind me, I think I'll be more dedicated. After all, with a journal devoted completely to my new friend, it would be kind of hard to forget. This will be all about my little Kurenai.
...after I get the history out of the way. ( whee )
But that must wait for a few hours. I'm writing this while sitting on an elderly woman's porch. She's off making tea for us, and I asked if I could stay out and watch the rain until it was ready. She agreed, but the pot has begun to whistle.
Why am I sharing tea with an elderly woman? I'll explain all that in the history. ( xd )
Until my pen next crosses paths with your pages.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Thursday, June 17th, 2004; 6:34 PM For 400 gold a month, I'm being rented a home. ( 3nodding )
On one of my nightly walks along the beach, I found a small house, abandoned and empty. That's where I took refuge for the past week, tell you the truth. ( sweatdrop ) I inquired about it earlier today, just after going to get my new little fenthry friend, and heard about the woman who owned it. The person who told me was kind enough to give me an address, and so I went to visit her. She told me that she only uses the house in the summer months, when it's warm out, and during the winter it goes unused and empty. I don't know how she knew exactly, perhaps because I was inquiring about it, but she agreed to let me rent it.
All I have to do is pay 100 gold a week, which takes care of her grocery bills and leaves some for her to save for emergencies. It's a very good cause, in my opinion. And I now have a home.
I sit here on her porch, sipping tea as I watch the rain and write down the recent events. But what I really should be writing is the history I promised. So I suppose I should get to that. I'd best start a new page for this...it's long. ( xd )
And so, until my pen again crosses your pages with news of Kurenai and myself.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Thursday, June 17th, 2004; 8:26 PM As promised, I will begin my history here. But first, I must mention that I have reached my new home, and it is from here that I write. It's still dark and rainy outside, but the light on the porch casts enough illumination for me to write comfortably.
Ah, the history of my tale...how I came to know of the fenthry and came to possess my little Kurenai. "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." ~Macbeth, Shakespeare's Macbeth
...but not really. I just like the quote. ( xd )
I could be stupid and cliche and say that it started with the birth of a little fox-girl, but I don't feel like it. As I said, I find that rather stupid.
The tale starts about two weeks ago, I suppose. That was when my landlord kicked me out of the house I was renting, complaining about an overabundance of fox-fur (hey, it's not MY fault that I shed in mid-spring and mid-autumn. It's a natural part of a fox-breed's life cycle. We have to stay cool/warm, after all. stare ) But, without a place to go home to at the end of the day, I decided to go and find a new place to live near some friends of mine.
The friend I was most looking forward to being close to was Jess-chan. Undoubtedly, she is one of my best friends in the world. I sent her a message about my intended trip before I left, conveniently leaving out the part about being temporarily homeless. As I waited for her reply, I packed my things up and asked a friend of mine who runs an inn to hold onto them until I sent word that I was ready to have them brought. Being the good friend he was, he agreed.
Which reminds me, I have to send him word that I'm ready for my things.
Why did I leave my possessions behind in my trek for a new place to live? Considering that I have 412 volumes of manga, countless books, many blank pads for writing and drawing, not to mention clothes, blankets, CDs, etc...I, personally, would rather not try and lug them around for the two week-long span of time it took not only to reach Jess-chan's town, but also to find a new place to live. ( sweatdrop )
The day I decided to leave, I got a return message from Jess-chan. She sounded ecstatic to hear that I was visiting...and also said something about having a new pet called a fenthry which she called Tenera.
My first word of a fenthry.
Considering the similarity in the word "fenthry" and "feathery," I automatically assumed that this new pet of hers was a feather. And the name of her fenthry was easy enough to remember, as well, considering that tenera, the Latin word for "soft," I understand, is remarkably similar to ternera, the Spanish word for "veal." ( stare ) My mind works in mysterious ways.
But I began my trek soon after I got word from her. I brought with me money (of course xd ), a blanket, a pillow, some random books, a few drawing and writing pads, and a few volumes of manga I felt that I couldn't live without. ( sweatdrop ) And so my week-long trip went uneventfully by.
Eventually I reached Jess-chan's town. It was...large, to say the least. Using the address she had given me before I left, I valiantly tried to find my way to her home. ( whee )
And after getting lost (and sidetracked sweatdrop ) more times than I can remember and asking for directions more times than I care to remember ( sweatdrop ), I FINALLY found the apartment complex where she lived! YAY ME, I thought. ( xd )
Of course, when I reached her room, I found a young man I didn't know standing there. It turns out that his name was Owyln, and he was another fenthry owner, just like Jess-chan and her sister, Marushii (the other friend I had planned on visiting). But the goal of meeting Marushii was pushed out of my mind by Jess-chan and Owyln's task: Taking down the horrid curtains in Jess-chan's apartment. ( whee )
And they really were horrid. ( eek ) Thick, dark velvet with splotches that might once have conceivably been roses before the seamstress BUTCHERED them in a pathetic attempt to sew them onto the velvet. ( stare ) But Jess-chan had found new curtains, lovely lavender ones with white trim and cute little yellow swirls.
Of course, all that was very short lived because her little saffron kitsune P-chan stained those pretty new curtains with barbeque sauce. ( xp ) And so, since I wanted to make myself useful (and since I was intent on exploring the town a bit more xd ), I headed out to go get her some new curtains.
I wandered around the city for a while, not knowing where I was going exactly (aka I was LOST xp ), until I found a little unobtrusive shop nestled in a small nook between the flashy stores lining the long street. Curious, I went inside for a look around.
It was a pack-rat's dream home. ( whee ) I was in heaven.
The shop had everything, from lovely curtains to random books to CDs to all sorts of eccentric little things like teapots shaped like animals. I REALLY wanted to buy one of those animal teapots, but without a stove to make tea on, it seemed like a waste of money. But they did have some lovely curtains and other items that I picked up as gifts. The curtains I picked for Jess-chan had a night sky at the top, dark navy bordering on black with little star specks, fading to lavender near the middle before the sky met the deep green-blue sea, complete with little white wave-crests delicately sewn on. I also saw some wonderful night curtains made of velvet with constellations sewn lovingly on, but I thought Jess-chan would like the sea scene better. Since it had the lavender she had liked in the old curtains.
Also, I bought a large book of flying creatures simply titled The Book of Avians for Marushii (since Jess-chan told me she loves fantasy books) and a CD of lullabys and quiet, calm songs for Tenera and Jess-chan. Unfortunately, the CD didn't have a cover book, so I listened to the CD (on the CD player I had brought, telling myself I couldn't live without it, which was a true statement for once eek ) and made a little book for it. I even drew a cover illustration, with little feathers and angel shadows on it. I wasn't happy with the color I added, but it was at least decent.
Which reminds me, Tenera. I met her at Jess-chan's apartment. ( 3nodding ) She was lovely and sweet, blue and violet...but she seemed very shy. I wonder how I could tell that, exactly...
After exiting the shop, I looked at the name of the store. I got a kick out of it. "What You Thought Was Lost." A very fitting name, in my opinon. ( xd )
After that, I spent the next few hours asking for directions and getting lost trying to find Jess-chan's apartment again. Around sunset I found it...but, remembering Jess-chan's mostly nocturnal habits, I thought she might be asleep, so I knocked on the door of her sister, Marushii, who lives next door.
Of course, Jess-chan wasn't asleep. She came out of her apartment wearing a putrid smelling shirt and was promptly doused in berry-scented air freshener, courtesy of her older sister before being invited into the apartment. I took the opportunity to give Marushii the book I had gotten. Also, I had the pleasure of meeting her feather who, as of yet, doesn't have a name. But he seemed much more extroverted than Jess-chan's did. I also gave Jess-chan her CD, completely forgetting about the curtains I had bought (even though I had to wrestle with them to get the CD out of the backpack xp ).
Well, we left Marushii's house when she asked us to go, saying she was tired. It was already close to dark when we left, so I headed off to get some dinner. I found a nice little place in town and had dinner there, then walked out to the shore and strolled around for a while to burn off some of my extra energy. I saw a large mansion-like house that had, at the time, appeared empty. I wondered who owned it, but didn't spend much time on the thoughts. I simply kept going for a while before turning back. That trip back was the first time I noticed the little house I know rent. ( 3nodding ) I decided to sleep on the porch swing that night. ( sweatdrop )
Of course, it was while I was sleeping that something suddenly jogged my memory that I had somehow forgotten to give Jess-chan her curtains. That bolted me awake, and so I trekked off to her house (I didn't even have to ask for directions!! xd Granted, I couldn't really ask for directions because there was no one out stare ). My mind still stuck on the thoughts of her nocturnal habits, I knocked confidently on her door.
Of course, as I should have realized when she had visited Marushii with me, her nocturnal habits had been thrown off at some point...so she was asleep when I came. But she did love the curtains, after she woke up enough to recognize them. ( sweatdrop )
I'd best stop there for now. The rain has finally stopped, at least for a moment, and I want to take a walk along the beach to collect my thoughts before continuing.
So, until my pen crosses your page with more of this strange hisory of mine.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Thursday, June 17th, 2004; 10:17 PM I had a wonderful walk along the beach tonight. I didn't see Owyln, though...which, I suppose, is a good thing. He was very close to finding out I didn't have a home to live in as of last night. ( eek ) I was lucky that Molly decided to choose that opportunity to "hatch." I was also lucky to see the second fenthry come out of her feather form...
Of course, on my way back from the beach, it began to rain. ( sweatdrop ) I'm just glad I remembered to bring the umbrella Foenix gave me today. ( 3nodding )
But back to the history. I suppose this history is long and rather boring...but I feel like recording it. My thoughts tend to wander off on long tangents sometimes, and this just happens to be one of those times when I don't care enough to stop them. Most of the time I'll realize that they're just pointless rantss and snip them into easily manageable, less-drawn out sections. But I like this history. So I'm keeping it, long though it is. ( blaugh )
As I mentioned last time, I gave the curtains to Jess-chan. After that, the two of us headed down to the seashore for a day of sunlit fun. It was very pleasant, really, having company. I had forgotten what it was like to have company, after living on my own for so long. I rather wished that the day had not ended...but, as all things must, the day did draw to a close and we went our separate ways. I took refuge on the same porch as the night before.
The next day I simply wandered around the city. I found the little shop again and looked at everything they had (which was quite a lot, it was much longer than it appeared from the outside and could hold a goodly amount of stuff while still being comfortable to walk in xd ). And so this continued for a few days. I thought I was content to wander the city in the daytime and take a stroll down the beach at night before curling up to sleep on the porch of the little house by the ocean.
But slowly a dark depression settled over my mind. I was lonely. I remembered the day I spent with Jess-chan and wished that I could go back to it. But a day is gone once the sun sets, and a new day begins with each rise of the golden disk. But with each rise, the sorrow of loneliness weighted heavier on my heart. I thought about Jess-chan and Tenera, Marushii and her fenthry, and Owyln with his. I considered going to get my own fenthry to keep me company when I wandered.
And so, a few days ago, my wanderings took me to the very store I wished to find. The Fenthry Preservation Society. The store where Jess-chan and Marushii had gotten their fenthries. Upon entering, who do I find but Jess-chan herself! Not only that, she was asking Louhi, the shopkeeper, if I could buy a fenthry! Of course, the thought overjoyed me, for I had been considering the very same thing.
But...at the time there were none available to me. And the following day, the day of the next sale, I had agreed to meet a friend for a day of exploration in town. My luck, as it generally seems to be, was dismal.
Yet that day went mostly without incident. I met my companion at noon and we explored until near midnight, talking and laughing and getting to know each other all over again. It was a calm, enjoyable day that went nearly without incident...but something did happen to her by our parting. Something that I may relate later, should she decide to visit again someday. For now, I wish more to keep it secret to all but myself and the one who trusted me.
It began to rain the next day. The rain has been keeping up steadily since, much to my own delight. I've always loved the rain. I don't care if others say that it is dismal, unpleasant, or anything else. To me, the rain is beauty, a blessing disguised as something most will hate. Flowers grow when it rains. How can people hate something that makes the flowers grow?
But that day I entered the store and again met Jess-chan marvelling over the new feathers. I came to join her and found myself confronted by the most beautiful feather I had ever seen. A lovely coppery gold was her base color, with delicate gold swirls and tiny blue specks ringed with the same golden color decorating her barbs. I was stunned, awed, and amazed by the sight. But Louhi never appeared that day. As I was about to find my way to the shore in the rain, though, Tenera did something amazing.
She "hatched." She came out of her feather form and became a four-inch tall creature with long, curled ears, lion-like feet, long violet hair, adorable lavender wings, and a human-like body covered in soft blue fur. She was barely four inches tall.
And suddenly the feeling of sorrowful loneliness weighed down upon my heart more powerfully than ever before. I wished for a fenthry of my own to love, as I knew Jess-chan loved Tenera. After congratulating Jess-chan, I left the shop and went off on my walk down the beach. It was still raining, lovely raindrops rippling the ocean water in incomprehensible patterns.
And who should I meet but Owyln, running up the beach to bring me to shelter. It turns out that the majestic house I had seen on my earlier travels belonged to him. The pictures in his kitchen portrayed a happy family...but Owyln always seems to radiate a sadness too deep to comprehend...
But he confronted me about my late-night walks along the beach. I told him the truth, of course. I walked there to burn off extra energy to get me to sleep. Thankfully, before he could inquire further, his fenthry decided to hatch. In a fantastic, lovely, dramatic display, she turned into an adorable beige-colored fenthry with pink hair and wings, much like Jess-chan's but for the coloration and the disposition.
While Tenera had been curious about the large beings staring down at her, the fenthry he decided to call Molly began to cry.
The fearful sadness of the fenthry was enough to allow me an escape. I left, and he didn't follow. Sweet little Molly...she's helped me more than she knows.
And so, the next day, I headed back to the Fenthry Preservation Society shop only to find another young woman marvelling at the golden feather. I could see in her eyes that she desired the lovely golden feather far more than I could, and so I relenquished my desire for it. Besides, I reasoned, what about the other fenthry? There was a nice pastel blue-tipped one that still needed a home...
...but something deep inside ached. Though she was sweet, she was not the one I had wanted, and desire is not easy to give up. Loss and depression weighing on my heart, I stepped out into the rain for a few moments. The woman who took the golden fenthry, Foenix, wished that I could get to know the fenthry we had both wanted.
She's a very sweet woman. I hope to see her regularly. It has always been hard for me to make new friends...an odd quirk of my personality. I'm shy to no end around people I don't know, but I'm nearly hyper-insane around those I'm familiar with.
But when I returned to the shop, I found a wonderous surprise waiting for me in the display case.
Where the golden feather had once lay, there was a garnet red fenthry with soft white spots accenting her barbs. Instantly a picture of the friend who had visited mere days before flashed before my mind's eye. Immediately something possessed me to fully relenquish what affection I had felt toward the gold one and pour all that and more into the fenthry that reminded me so much of that old friend.
I bought the brilliant red feather. And though I'm leaving her true name open for her to decide in the end, I nick-named her after my friend that I loved so much. And so my fenthry will be called Kurenai. My little Kurenai.
Then, of course, I began to stress because I had no way of keeping my little Kurenai-chan protected from the rain outside. But companions never seem to be far away. Foenix loaned me a scarlet umbrella. I truly hope that I'll see her again.
But then, as I stood under my umbrella in the rain, who should I meet but Jess-chan! With Tenera in her pocket, of course. And as I showed off my feather, Tenera spoke her first word. "Deeee..."
I feel horrible about it. Tenera's first word was the first part of my name. It wasn't even part of Jess-chan's name, it was mine. Perhaps if I hadn't shown off Kurenai for Jess-chan and Tenera to see, it wouldn't have happened...but, unfortunately, what's done is done. If I could change that I would. I just wish Tenera had spoken Jess-chan's name.
But afterward I inquired about the house on the shore at which I had been taking refuge. A very kind man told me about the woman who owned it, and it took little time for me to find her house. I suppose I'm finally getting to know this city a bit better. ( 3nodding )
And so we reached the agreement. For 100 gold a week, 400 gold total a month, I would stay at her beach home throughout the autumn, winter, and early spring until she came for her summer sun. I have the feeling that I will have moved on by that time, but I can never be sure. If it displaces me, then I will simply make plans ahead. Perhaps the month of her arrival I can begin to look...
...but that doesn't matter right now. I have a home for many months to come. The future will come when it will, but now is the present and that is the time that matters the most. To me, at least.
As I sit here, Kurenai resting gently against my cheek as I hold her in my left hand against my face, I can't help but wonder if I will be the right owner for her...or if I might have cursed her simply by giving her the nick-name of my old friend...and if that is true, if I can care for her as well as she needs to be cared for.
If my little Kurenai-chan has the same problems as Crimson does, then perhaps life will be a bit harder. But I will never give up on her. For she is to be my companion for the rest of her life and mine. Or...perhaps it's her life or mine. It could be both, after all.
All this speculation...and here I was talking about living in the moment rather than the future to come. Silly D-chan...but it's getting late, and now that my walk and my history have been finished and recorded, I plan on going to bed.
Tonight, I will curl up in the bed the woman left here and kindly allowed me to use. Under my blanket with Kurenai above my head on the pillow, so that she can always feel my presence and my warmth. And tomorrow, I'll call Trent and ask him to send my things, and I'll go to "What You Thought Was Lost" and the grocery store and get everything I need for this wonderful new life. Perhaps I will even see Owyln and Foenix and Jess-chan.
But then again, it is the future. You never know. And neither do I.
Until my pen again crosses your pages with news on my sweet little Kurenai-chan.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Friday, June 18th, 2004; 9:04 AM Morning. I've never liked mornings. Especially not Monday mornings, but mornings in general have never been my favorite times of the day. I like the night. It's darker, quieter, leaving more room for the imagination. And even if our imagination finds horrors in the dark, there are doubtless others who find peace.
Of course, the fairies followed me from my old home to this one, so peace is rather hard to come by. ( sweatdrop )
Last night I was sleeping when I felt something brush against my forehead. Worried that it was Kurenai-chan and that she had fallen down and was now in prime squish-by-rollover territory, I snapped awake.
Thankfully, she was fine. She had slipped down and slightly to the side so that just her tip brushed against my forehead...almost as though she had planned it that way.
Of course, if she had planned it, then she had wanted me awake to see the fairies return. ( eek )
So, of course, I look out my window and see the disembodied lights I have come to know so well as the fairy lights. The amber one, as usual, was the most vivid, being the first fairy light I ever saw. I think that light has some particularly strong attachment to me...but yes, fairy lights.
And they just STAYED THERE. For the rest of the night. I watched them for about an hour before deciding that they weren't going to make their moves just yet and that it was, henceforth, safe to go back to sleep. So, moving Kurenai from the pillow to the bed beside me, out of sight of the fairies, I fell back asleep.
When I woke up this morning, they were gone. As they always are when day begins.
Okay, I should explain all this fairy business. Long ago (more like two or three years ago stare ), I was out for a relaxing vacation at the lake. One night when I was up late reading, I happened to look out the window and see a vivid amber light in the trees. It flickered as the wind shifted the foliage to mask it, but it was there. Very bright and most certainly there. For two or three hours I watched that unmoving light, and then I went to bed.
The next night it was still there, but dimmer. Not as vivid a color as before. On my last trip, it wasn't even there.
No, the fairy light had disappeared from the lake.
( stare ) It migrated after me.
And after that, the procession seemed to grow. With every new place I've lived, I've gotten a new fairy light. That amber one just goes out and finds another fairy light and says, "hey, I've found a good person to follow. Once we get enough fairies, we can eat her!" And with an opportunity like that, what fairy could resist?
Yeah, I think the fairies are gonna eat me one day. ( stare ) Either that or make me their queen. ( sweatdrop ) I think it depends on their mood the day they come get me. ( stare )
Of course, you probably think I'm insane. I can almost hear the pages laughing as my pen scratches across them with these words. But I'm not crazy! I have seen the fairy lights!
...yeah. ( stare ) And Kurenai obviously doesn't think I'm crazy, she's the one who woke me up to find those lights outside the window. I can only wonder what it could mean, though...does she know that they're out to get me and woke me up to put me on guard against them? Or did she wake me because she knew they weren't going to hurt me and to put me at ease?
When she grows up a bit more I'll have to ask. And when I finally meet these fairies, I'll have to ask them how they can stand out there in the rain and not seem at all fazed. ( eek )
But until that time comes, I'll just wait. And today, I need to put in a call to Trent and ask him to send my stuff over. What for me was a week-long trek would probably be little more than a few hours for the truck, which is good! That way I'll have sheets and comforters and more pillows! ( xd )
And I'll go out to "What You Thought Was Lost" and pick up a teapot. Because I REALLY liked those teapots. And I'll go to the grocery store for food to put in the pantry and the refrigerator (which she also agreed to let me use)...and maybe wander around after that. It's still raining slightly, so I plan on taking my umbrella with me for these little chores I've been mulling over since last night.
And so, until my pen again crosses your pages with more news of Kurenai and myself.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Friday, June 18th, 2004; 4:21 PM It's been a rather nice day, tell you the truth. ( 3nodding )
Around ten o'clock I called Trent and asked him to send my things. He agreed and said he'd have them sent immediately. Knowing that it would take some time for the truck with my possessions to reach me, I decided to take Kurenai out so that we could do some chores. Unfortunately, I had no idea where to put my little Kurenai-chan so that I wouldn't lose her or have her fly away.
I considered putting her in my hair, like Marushii does for her fenthry, but I soon remembered that nothing will ever stay in my hair. I should know, I've tried. Barrettes slip out in minutes. I considered putting my hair up, but I can't stand keeping my hair up. I've always felt better with my hair loose, down, and free. I don't care what other people say, my hair needs to be long and loose for me to feel right.
I also considered putting her in my pocket, as Jess-chan now carried her newly-hatched Tenera. But that thought was rushed immediately out of my head. To put her in my pocket would either allow her to more easily fall out (if I only put her in up to the first barbs) or constrict her movement enough to make her feel uncomfortable (if I put her in as far as possible). And it would muss her lovely barbs, as well.
I then considered putting her in one of my sketchbooks or writing pads, as Owyln did. But that thought was immediately banished because I hadn't planned on keeping a book with me that day. Not only that, it would have been too dark. She couldn't move, either.
And so, as I emptied my pack onto the table in the small kitchen, I considered putting her in my backpack. But that would have a similar problem to the sketchbook, it would be dark. Not to mention rather lonely. So I considered putting her in the zipper. But then there was the chance she would be stolen, so that thought went down the drain.
And suddenly, as I was putting on my backpack, a brilliant thought possessed me! I could slip the shaft under the strap and have her by my neck! Having an extremely ticklish neck, I wouldn't forget her like I would if I put her behind my ear, and she'd be able to move more freely.
And so the two of us went out on our errands. It was horrible and humid out, though, which made it rather miserable until we reached the shops with some level of air conditioning. ( xp ) Our first stop was What You Thought Was Lost to get a basket to carry groceries. ( sweatdrop ) With as many groceries as I planned to get, I'd need at least one basket to carry them home in.
So I wound up getting two. ( xd ) I also bought the most adorable teapot there! ( biggrin ) It's a little mouse wearing a Robin Hood-style hat on his head. He's cute and fluffy and he brandishes a carrot! ( xd ) The carrot is the spout. The handle is very unique, though, because it's slightly tilted. The handle is actually the mouse's bow. A bow made of celery. ( xd ) And tied with plant fibers, as far as I can tell. And he even has a little quiver of artichoke-looking arrows with little bird feathers. ( 3nodding ) I couldn't stand it. It was just too cute. And the lid is so cute and creative. The mouse's hat is the lid of the teapot, and it's lifted by gripping the two sides of the arrow sticking out on either side. ( xd )
So I bought it. ( whee )
After that we went home and dropped the teapot off, then proceeded to go to the store where we stocked up on the essentials of life.
Fiori pasta, pretzels, tea, spanish rice, cheese, refried beans, Lady Gray tea, peppermints, chocolate, tomatoes, green tea, rice, and more tea. ( whee )
Of course, that was only part of our list. Trent long ago taught me how to cook, and I picked up some cooking tips and abilities from my parents, so I know how to cook a few things. And so, when that was done, we made the trek back home laden down with food to put in the refrigerator and pantry.
Then, as I was stocking the pantry, the truck arrived with my things! So, of course, I immediately abandon my original task to start getting the house D-chan friendly. Bookshelf filled with manga in alphabetical order; random books placed on every available shelf, table, and nightstand; writing pads placed at strategic locations around the house; bed made and ready; and, the crowning glory, the crochet hooks and baby yarn all spread out nicely along the table.
I guess I should mention my plan. Because I love to do strange things, I decided that it might be nice to crochet little nightgowns for the fenthries. ( 3nodding ) Since they're so small, I could probably finish while the owner waited. ( biggrin ) And the fenthry could choose the color he or she wanted, too. And I could do sleeves and everything! ( 3nodding )
But I'm getting ahead of myself. The plans haven't even been finalized yet.
Well, I think I'll end this entry here. The evening is coming, early as usual now that autumn is upon us. I plan on taking Kurenai on her second walk through the sand, but since it's sunny out instead of rainy, it should be a new and different experience for her.
As she lays in my palm, I can see her barbs rustling in an invisible breeze. She seems contented, quiet and at peace. As I get to know my fenthry, she reminds me so much more of her namesake...I hope Crimson is all right. She'd be flattered if I told her I'd given my fenthry her nickname. But...there's still that nagging fear tugging at the back of my mind.
But if she has does problems like Kurenai-chan does, then I will take them in stride. For I love Crimson, and if I can give my little Kurenai-chan even a fraction of the love and affection I feel for her namesake, she will have a wonderful life.
Until my pen again crosses your pages with news of Kurenai-chan.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Friday, June 18th, 2004; 5:43 PM Well, as it turns out, I decided to postpone my walk along the beach to visit the fenthry shop. Some storm clouds had appeared on the horizon over the sea, but I thought we could get back and have our walk before they got here. It turns out I was right, and I'm even taking the time to write this before our trek across the open sands. ( 3nodding )
Anyway, I went to visit the fenthry shop and met Foenix again, as well as a few potential fenthry owners, May and Akina. They seem like nice people. I hope they get fenthries of their own so that my little Kurenai-chan has a few more playmates when she gets a bit older and hatches out of her sweet little feather form.
But I went in and expressed my fears to Foenix. About how Kurenai might be more like her namesake than I had originally hoped, because even with all my worrying she seems to retain Crimson's calm, gentle personality. Even as I write this with the fenthry on the back of my hand, I can feel her barbs rolling across my hand in a comforting (though rather centipede like xd ) motion. Foenix told me that I needed to stop worrying because if I continued to be so anxious Kurenai-chan would pick up on it and be nervous when she got older, having had me worrying over her incessantly in her feather-hood.
I'm just not sure if I believe that.
I keep hearing people say that pets become like their owners as time goes on. I've never believed that, personally. I've always believed that pets become what their owners most need. A lonely child gets a playful puppy who becomes a best friend. Someone who never seemed to get enough care in life gets a pet that needs all the care and attention he or she can lavish upon it. And so here I am, worrying over my sweet little fenthry while she tries to comfort me.
And you know what?
It's working. ( 3nodding )
So before it storms, as I know it will (and it will make me VERY happy if it starts to thunder, lightning light shows are the best whee ), we will take our walk along the beach. And if Kurenai-chan gets scared of the thunder, I'll be there to comfort her. Maybe we'll even see Owyln and Molly out today out there on the shore. ( 3nodding )
Until my pen again crosses your pages with news of my sweet little Kurenai-chan.
Yours truly, ~D-chan Spiro

Marushii Mini-Event! GASP! While you were out, it appears that someone has left a package on your doorstep. Eagerly, you tear off the plain, brown wrapping to reveal...

A stuffed animal! It is eleven inches long, from its "chest" to the tip of its tail. To the shoulder, it is about four inches -- perfect for a Fenthry to play "horsey" with! The "mane" of the horse is soft, yet a slight tug on it reveals it to be strong and sturdy. Another tug at the wings reveals those to be strong and sturdy as well... Enough so that to "flap" the wings, you would have to push down very hard. There is also a space between the wings -- room enough to create, say, a small bed?
Beneath the plush, there is a small tag:Quote: To: D-chan and Kurenai From: Marushii and Kaji If anything happens to it, feel free to tell me -- I'll fix at no charge! Seeya soon! heart
For some reason, you can't shake the feeling that it's a... promo item of some kind. Oh well.
