Marissa leaned against the wall of her patio and tried to spot the sea lions she could hear barking. The rock they occupied was far away from her apartment and more than half of it was blocked by the palm trees that grew in the canyon across from her but she could still make out the white splash of the sea foam and the black dots of the sea lions as they slid off of the rock and into the ocean. She followed the path of one of them with her eyes as it made its way out to a ship that was docked off shore. For a moment she just stared at it and then as it registered in her mind what it was she jumped up and down and ran inside to check her hair. “He’s back!” she announced excitedly to her lovebirds. Secretly she wondered why Darius had not told her he would be returning so soon but she was too happy to complain. She was only truly happy when Darius was with her, the rest of the time she was just content with her life. She always had a smile on but when he was there she truly beamed. Sometimes she would think back to before she had found his orb hidden in her garden and how depressed she had been. If he hadn’t shown up she didn’t know how she would have survived, but he did appear and she had become focused on protecting him in both his orb and when he had become an undera. When he was fully grown it was him who had protected her. He had tried to protect her before but she still thought of him as a child, it was different though when she looked up and realized he wasn’t an undera anymore. A blush covered her cheeks as she remembered years before when she had tripped over a cord in the living room and he had caught her. That was the first time she had noticed that he was taller than her and the first time she realized that she was attracted to him. She frantically tried to make the blush go away but couldn’t. In the living room the handle on the front door turned and a man stepped in. “Marissa?” Darius called out as he set his bag down beside him. He closed the door behind him and flipped the lock. He looked towards the hallway when he heard her set down her brush and she ran to greet him. “Darius!” she called to him happily. He let out an "oomph" as she rammed into him and knocked him onto the bean bag that had been perfectly positioned to catch them every time she ran to hug him at the door. He chuckled as he looked down at the girl who gazed starry eyed up at him. “I see you’ve missed me.” He laughed. Every time he came home she would knock him down trying to hug him but since they had gotten the bean bag he hadn’t minded as much. At least he wasn’t sore now from falling. Marissa struggled to sit up from where she had fallen between his legs but finally decided against it and rested her chin on his chest. “Aww, giving up already?” he asked and she could feel his chest rumble as he spoke. He looked in her eyes glad she was always there, her excitement when she greeted him always made him feel wanted and he knew he would always have a place by her side. He lifted her chin her chin and leaned down to gently kiss her before helping her stand. “Come on,” he said as he tossed his bag over his shoulder and headed towards his bedroom, “we have lots to do, and little time to do it. And if I know you, you already have plans for us for every day that I’ll be here.” And he was right; she did have plans for the seven days he would be there. They weren’t set in stone plans, just ideas of what she wanted to do like watching movies, hanging out with friends, telling stories of his travels. Anything would be fine as long as he was with her every moment that he was on land.

Marissa leaned against the arm of the couch, her legs stretching across it to rest on Darius’s lap. A blanket was draped over his knees covering her feet to keep them from getting cold. Darius passed the bowl of popcorn back to her and she scooped out a handful, popping a couple of pieces of popcorn into her mouth with her other hand. On the television screen a beast of a man was holding a talking candelabrum and leading a beautiful girl to her room as he explained the rules of the castle to her. Marissa shivered on the couch and scooted next to Darius to lean against hi warm body and huddle under the blanket they now shared. “It was a really warm day; I wonder why it’s so cold now.” Darius murmured. They could both smell the storm on the air but neither of them said anything about it. Darius looked down at Marissa as she yawned. He wrapped an arm around her pulling her closer and with his other hand reached for the popcorn that rested in her lap. By the time the enchanted castle in the movie was returned to normal Marissa and Darius’s left arm were asleep. Above them the first flash of lightning and clap of thunder split the air. Marissa did not wake up but snuggled closer into his chest freeing Darius’s arm. He stretched it out in front of him, flexing his fingers until his arm stopped hurting. A fifth crack of thunder shook the building. Darius flicked off the television and gently leaned Marissa the other way so he could get up. They had unplugged the rest of the electronics earlier that day and the television had a special electric cord so he was not worried about that. As he passed the window a bolt of lightning lit the room. Curious he pushed aside the blinds and looked outside. Hovering in the air between their apartment and the pier was a ball of lightning with bolts coming from it. Startled Darius let the blinds fall back down. He lifted Marissa into his arms and carried her to her room. He set her gently in her bed and covered her with the blankets. With a kiss on her forehead he turned away to go to his room. Realizing he was caught on something he turned around to find that Marissa had been woken up by the last clap of thunder and was holding his wrist. “It’s just a storm.” He told her as he sat down on the edge of the bed. Another clap of thunder shook the building and Marissa shot up wrapping her arms around his back and burying her face in his chest. “It’s louder than usual!” she cried as lightning lit up the room again followed immediately by thunder. The storm was right on top of them and it was stronger the usual. The lightning was hitting every few seconds with the thunder sounding at almost the same time. “It’ll be okay.” Darius whispered into Marissa’s hair. He rubbed her back hoping to stop her shaking but it did not work. Finally he pulled back her comforters and slid into the bed beside her pulling her against him. He sang a sailors’ ballad into her ear until her shaking subsided and she fell back to sleep. “I’ll protect you.” He assured her when the thunder woke her up again later that night. He repeated the three words over and over again until the storm passed on and morning came. When Marissa woke up the next morning to blue skies peaking through the window she smiled at Darius who was fast asleep, exhausted from his night vigil. She snuggled under his arm resting her head against his chest and whispered “I love you” Before falling back into a dream where a familiar voice whispered “I’ll protect you” over and over again.
