~Believe those who seek the truth….Hokay, so everyone knows that with every good series comes a darker/more questionable time in its history of growth. And our beloved Legend of Zelda gaming series was marked with three games that are considered in my and most LoZ fans' opinions to be a) degrading to the characters and the story; b) unoriginal; c) NOT COOL and d) worthy of pyromania (i.e. being set on fire in entertaining ways).
"Zelda CD-I games" is the term I use to refer to the three PC games developed NOT BY NINTENDO but by the software company Philips Compact Disc Interactive (CD-I). Nintendo gave the PC software company, Philips, licensing while they raced to work on further game development (according to Krismck) and, due to the enormous popularity of the Zelda series at the time, decided to create three games with a recognizable LoZ theme, to say the least. But I suppose that yes, we do need to take into account the fact that the games had very small budgets of about $600,000 each (also according to Krismck).
The first game is entitled "Link: The Faces of Evil". Basically, it's a rather lame twist plot where Link must go defeat a very bat-faced Ganon and save the island of Koridai (because apparently Hyrule is just fine-????), where Princess Zelda is imprisoned. My favorite funny quote from it: "SQUADALAAA!" (the wizard with the turban).
The second game is called "Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon". In this storyline, another island (is this a weird Wind Waker lookalike or what?) called Gamelon has been attacked by Ganon's forces. King Harkinian (don't ask me where these names come from) tries to help, but vanishes, so Link is sent to help, but then he vanishes. So then Zelda and Impa (who in these games is not the fierce and beloved Sheikah warrior we know and love from OoT or even the respectable caretaker from Ages/Seasons, but is in fact a frail old lady who apparently is in charge of keeping the Triforce of Wisdom) go to the island to try and rescue them.
The third game, which is the rarest of all of the Zelda CD-I games due to the fact that only a few thousand were made, is called "Zelda's Adventure". As the title suggests, in this game the usual roles of typical Zelda/Link games are reversed, and this time Link has been imprisoned by Ganon and now Zelda must go save him (how is this possible in the first place? I don't know).
I have to mention that this version of Link (in at least the first two games) is very similar to the obnoxious Link featured in the 80's TV show (which was also rather unsuccessful as it only ran for thirteen episodes) which despite this was very comical. The graphics are crude (2-D, and it looks like bad pre-school computer drawings) and the voice-overs are awful, as are the sound effects. The King is an idiot and Link is bent on winning a kiss from Zelda. sweatdrop
If you want to have a laugh at these, post your Zelda CD-I experiences here. I'll post some screenshots to give those who haven't seen it before a taste of exactly what I'm talking about. I'm actually trying to restrain my dislike of it for the sake of others so they can learn about it.
If you really want to see some of the animation go to Youtube and just search "Zelda CD-I" or any of the game titles. You'll find something ("Youtube Poop: Zelda CD-I")
FYI all of my information comes from Web sources and Youtube videos. Plus Krismck. I have not belittled myself and my love for Zelda so much as to actually invest in these games.
I'm trying to be better with the bashing cause some people, maybe some kids, might have enjoyed it. It was very funny to me, at least, and I suppose that's saying something. But it was the wrong kind of funny for LoZ.
