Naruto is about a series of villages in feudal Japanese setting. What makes it unique is that all of the villagers are ninja ninja . Further diversifying them, they all have their own "powers," or jutsu, that give them an edge over the other ninja clans. These skills can be anything: examples ranging from breathing fire burning_eyes to making copies of one's self xd xd xd xd xd or even just enhanced martial arts mad . For more info on the skills, see the Weapons and Chakra posts.

Villages are numerous, and to support themselves, they assign each ninja to a three-man team. They then assign each team missions: the missions are ranked S, A, B, C, and D, with S being the toughest. The Hokage is the one who assigns the missions to the teams, who gain payment on completion. For more info on this, see the villages post.

Teams are made up of characters of the same rank. Rankings are decided by rigorous tests and determine one's ablilty and social standing. For more info on this, see the Character post.

The Villages are all based on a symbol, the lands being:

+The Land of Earth, Village Iwagakure (Village Hidden in the Rocks)
------The symbol is a cracked rock:

+The Land of Wind, Village Sunagakure (Village Hidden in the Sand)

Other series-popular villages are:

+Kusagakure(Village Hidden in the Grass)

+Amegakure (Village Hidden in the Rain)

+Otogakure (Village Hidden in Sound)

+Takigakure (Village Hidden in a Waterfall)

The location where a person is from gives a bit of background about them. Notorious clans of the villages usually have at least one jutsu dedicated to that element (an example would be the The Land of Fire's clan Uchiha. Their 'Katon: Gōkakyū no jutsu' is essentially a giant fireball)

There is also bad blood between some of the towns. The Sound and Cloud Villages are both anti-Leaf Village, where the story will take place. These are because: the Sound is run by Orochimaru, who wants to destroy the leaf village after not becoming Hokage, and: the Cloud village wants revenge on their leader's death after trying to kill a member of the Hyuga clan for the secret of their clan jutsu.

The Sand and Leaf, however, are on excellent terms after discovering that Orochimaru killed the Sand village's equivalent to the Hokage.

Rankings: The Ninja are split into different rankings based on their mastery of techniques and ability to complete missions.

Academy Student: These are the newbies of the ninja world! All RPers will start out like this until they find a Jonin, consisting now of Kakashi and Myself. These shinobi are stuck with D-rank missions, consisting or menial tasks like finding lost pets or going off to get groceries. It's the trivial tasks considered too lowly for the otehr ranks, but after a small graduation ceremony and being matched up with a Jonin teacher, they become-

Genin: Genin begin to get slightly more advanced in missions, but they mainly train in three-man teams led by a jonin who instructs them so that they can pass the test to become-

Chunin: Chunnin begin to get the good missions. After taking a written, survival, and battle test, they are selected from the Genin who live through to pass the exam. Here, they begin to get tougher missions, such as bodyguards and reconnaissance. They can also accept teaching jobs and are often used asLater, they can become-

Jonin: Jonin have proven adeptness at many jutsu and are asked to perform A rank missions like assassinations and retreiving artifacts. Each Jonin is eventually teamed up with three genin, who they are told to watch over and train.

ANBU: The elite of the elite ninja join ANBU, which is a special forces team in the village. These travel in groups of four, three fighters and a medic. They protect the village's borders and act as bodyguards for important shinobi.

Hokage: Hokage is basically the President of the Village. It is rumored that one has to memorize 1,000 jutsu to attain this rank. They are the ones who assign the actual missions and act as a parent figure to the people under their rule.

Weapons in Naruto are numerous, leaving much potential for creation.

The main aspect to creating a weapon- There is NO SUCH THING as a gun! This means you have to use your imagination; sucks to be you ^^
But to help you out, here's a list of common weaponry in Naruto:

Hand-held:

Swords- The main form is a Katana, but there are many swords in the show that use 'light' or elements as a source.
*Improvisation could be a wind sword, earth sword, ect.

Staffs- Bo staves and the like are used occasionally, but mainly by Tenten, the weapons expert. These are easy to make up by adding some special attribute to.
Fans- Temari uses a giant fan that creates cyclones powered by her chakra.
Puppets- Puppets controlled by the shinobi so they can attack without risking injury.
Pets- Any animal utilized in a battle, whether it's job is to fight or heal from the sidelines.
Nunchaku- Obvious enough...
Knives- Again, should be self-explanatory.
Jinchūriki bloodline- NOT using any of the beasts in the show, but one can draw on a "hidden power" to grant strength.

Projectiles:

Shuriken- throwing stars, these are rarely used to kill but mainly to cause the enemy to back off...
Kunai- Throwin' knives! These are made to cause pain...
Senbon- Throwing needles: these are used to hit vital organs which can speed up or slow down the body internally.
Caltrops- These look like jacks and are small spiked balls dropped on the ground to hobble pursuers.

Explode-sives!

Tags- small scraps of paper that expolde after a certain amount of time.
Smoke- these emit smoke when tripped up.
Light- Same as above, but these emit a bright light.

Chakra is virtually unique to this anime based on its form and function. Every person has a "stamina" pool. This varies by the person, but it's use is the same all around. Stamina in the pool can then be converted to either Taijutsu or Chakra:

-Taijutsu is basic punch/kick kung-fu. This doesn't use a lot of stamina, because it's simply moving around. Using taijutsu is basically free, unless you choose to do a "supercharged" attack. This is done by focusing chakra into whatever part of the body is used to attack and releasing the chakra on impact for a stronger hit. This can also be utilized to increase speed and jumping ability.

-Chakra has two phases- creation and control. Creation is when one converts stamina to chakra, which is able to be transformed into an attack. Control is when the chakra is made into a 'jutsu.' Jutsu consist of two separate versions of attack: ninjutsu and genjutsu, both of which require hand signs to initiate.

Ninjutsu is any 'elemental' attack. This can be anything from summoning animals to shooting shards of ice out one's nose. The basic definition is anything mean by the user to cause physical harm to an opponent.

Genjutsu is any 'mental' attack. The user of the genjutsu takes over the opponent's mind and causes them to believe whatever is being presented. This can cause opponents to feel intense pain and rob them of their fighting spirit, making them easy targets with kunai knives.
