Okay, so I'm pretty sure that i get the basic concept of logarithms, but I am having difficulties with the whole putting them into the calculator to get the correct answer. so... here is an example!

log5 125=3

or
log4 1/4=-1

so I get the basic concept that they are exponents, but my calculater must be stupied, I don't know. I would appriciate it if anyone could help me better understand how to do these or to help me figure out how to put them in to my calculator. I have a TI-30x IIB. don't know what that means but maybe it will help me?!?! many thanks if you can help me!

A standard calculator has two logarithm buttons: log and ln. log takes the logarithm base 10. ln takes the logarithm base e.

So when you type log 4 into your calculator, what it actually calculates is log(10) 4.

Here are two helpful formulas:

log(b) a = (log a) / (log b)

OR

log(b) a = (ln a) / (ln b)
