In a quiet bit of the poorer part of town stands a simple shack. It remains oddly untouched by the graffiti and vandalism that surrounds it, through some unwritten rule of respect. And the fact that there's nothing inside worth stealing and not much you could really do to vandalize it.
Inside, Errie sits by a bare lamp, reading a book and waiting.

A knock on the back door, and a nondescript male enters with a backpack slung over one shoulder. "Evening, Eerie Girl. I've got some things to be distributed."

She smiles and closes a piece of ribbon in the book to mark her page. "Hello Quinn. If you're using any drop spots, I hope they'll be a bit more accessible this week?"

"Only one, and it's a simple one for you. This manila envelope gets dropped in the west forest geocache. And this CD-R gets delivered to Doris's contacts. Other than that, I have the book you wanted, and it was a tough negotiation. Fortunately for you, thanks to our arrangement, I do all your work pro bono."
He takes out a bundle wrapped in brown paper.
"So what do you need a creepy thing like this for?"

She takes it with a nod. "I don't need it. I need other people not to have it. And maybe one person should have it. I'll have to keep watching. But until then, I'll keep it safe." She puts it under her mattress. "I'll put it somewhere secure when I go out again."
She looks out the window. "I'm worried. I've been part of this town longer than the shade slaved to the House of Nevermore has been protecting it. There are things moving, powers coming into play. When it comes down, I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it. I may not survive."

"In that case, the answer is simple. When it hits the fan, be somewhere else. You think I'm here talking to you right now because I can stomp whatever comes after me? Hell no. Like any good informant, I'm still alive because I know when to stand my ground, and when to get the Hell out of Dodge. "
He gets up, and his face gets paler, his ears get pointier, his hair gets longer and more silvery, until a double of Errie stands there. He says in her voice:
"Trust me. Heroes have short lives." He then goes behind a changing screen in the corner.

"I don't think that's an option for me any more than a white blood cell has a choice to fight diseases. If the town is is danger, I must fight for it."

The shapeshifted doppelganger steps out from behind the screen wearing clothes that resemble Errie's. "But if you're so connected to the town, what'll happen to it if you get offed?"
