Chapter One

In a boarding school one hundred thirty-six mile away from the nearest city, three students were watching the news on a very expensive-looking black leather sofa.
“Breaking news! We’ve just receive word that a mass murderer escaped from a federal prison, one hundred and sixty or so miles from here. This man was sentenced to death which was delayed do to the, ah, murder of the executioners so do not hesitate to do whatever is necessary if you are attacked. A description will be shown along with a picture shortly …

"You don't think he'll come here do you?" My friend Sophie asked softly. Her brown eyes were filled with worry.
"'Course not. Nothing exciting ever happens here." Max assured her."Besides, even if he does, I'll be here you protect you."
"Max you never took Fighting and Defense. How are you going to protect her if you can't protect yourself?" I inquired and changed the T.V. to the weather channel.
" Evelyn, Evelyn, Evelyn. You know my shield spells are the best in our grade. I could shield all three of us if I had to."
Now your probably thinking something along the lines of, "Shield spells, Fighting and defense, what kind of school is this?" Well this a school for mystics. Mystics are people with ,usually, unnatural skill
in combat and ,always, control at least one element. It's rare when a mystic can control three. Lucky me, I'm the first one in a century who can. Sure it's cool to have an advantage over others but it's so obvious. One look at me and you know I'm different. All mystics start out with blonde hair. It gets darker depending on how powerful they are. I have black hair. Does that make me really
powerful? Nope, I'm just different.
"Evelyn. Hello, earth to Even. Eve!" I think Max was trying to get my attention.
"Ow!" He bit me! "Ugh, what?" I asked in annoyance.
"Big storm coming."
"You bit me to tell me that?!"
"That's only part of it."
"Well?"
"Oh yeah, let's go back to the junior dorms."
"And play Truth or Dare!" Sophie added excitedly. I rolled my eyes. Truth or Dare is such a childish game, no one ever tells the truth. We started walking to the junior dorms.
"Fine, but only if there are truth potions and more people."
"Deal.", Sophie smirked. Uh oh, she's planning something. Maybe I'll just take a little peak in her mind to see if she's planning something bad for me. Darn, I almost forgot that she can sense when I'm in her mind.
"Gosh, Eva come back to this planet please! We're here and only you listened when we were given the password."
"Point-seven-seven-three-four", I said as I punched in the numbers.
"How the heck can you remember that?" Max exclaimed!
"Easy, if you put it in a calculator, enter it and, turn it up-side down, it says 'Hello'." I stated softly as the door opened without a sound. We walked over to the middle of the junior dorm lounge. In the middle there was a large black shaggy rug.
"Sophie stay here so no one takes the spot. Max help me get three more people , two guys and one girl." They both saluted. I looked around the large room. There were people by the fireplace, most likely mystics that control fire. Some people were practicing their powers and others were just sitting around talking quietly. Then I saw a boy sitting in the corner by himself reading a book. I walked over casually. The boy had light blond hair but not platinum. When I got closer I saw that his eyes were blue like mine except his were stormy and mine were dark.
"Hey I'm Evelyn Nightingale." I said sticking our my hand. He merely glanced up at me.
"Luke Anderson", he replied before turning his eye back to his book. I retrieved my hand and sat down in front of him.
"Is that a good book?" He shot me a look that said 'If it weren't, I wouldn't be reading it.' I sighed and waited five seconds. "Want to play Truth or Dare with my two friends and two others I have yet to me?"
"You aren't going to shut up until I agree are you?" Man this guy is smart. Am I supposed to answer that?
"You are correct." He groaned and shut the book.
"Where are we playing?", he asked standing up. I grinned and led him over to the middle of the room where Sophie, Max, and two others waited for us. We all sat on the rug in a circle. There were six glasses with a silver liquid in them, sitting at each spot on the carpet.
"Now that every one's here, let's start introductions," Sophie stated, breaking the silence. "So, um, my name is Sophie Withers. "Never call me Sophia because it's not my name. Never was, never will be. I'm fifteen years old and, obviously, this is first year here. My mom's a mystic too, and I control water." We all looked to the girl sitting next to her. She had platinum hair and green eyes.
"My name is Kristin Morse. I'm also fifteen. My element is earth. Um, yeah, that's about it". She seemed nervous. We all nodded, then looked at the boy next to Kristin. He had the same eyes and slightly darker hair.
"Sup. My name is Aiden Morse. Kristen is my twin. My element is Air and I've been playing the violin-"
"Woot, go strings!" I interrupted, which only received weird looks.
"As I was saying, I've been playing the violin for a year now. That's it," he said. It was now Luke's turn.
"Luke Anderson, fifteen, fire.", he stated as if he was bored. My turn next.
"Okay, so um, my name is Evelyn Nightingale. I'm the only mystic in my family. I play the cello and yeah". I started fiddling with my fingers as Sophie narrowed her eyes at me. I looked at Max to go next.
"Max Snider. Looks like we're all 15 here. I play the piano and my element is earth."
"Okay, lets get started. In front of you is a truth potion, one drink should last one hour. Everyone take a drink ", Sophie said. We all did. "Now who wants to go first?"
"Oh pick me! Pick me!" Kristin waved her arm around in the air.
"Okay, Kristin, you can start", Sophie said.
"Yes!" she exclaimed. "Luke, truth or dare?" Luke narrowed his eyes. "Truth" he said. Kristin asked, "would you eat a worm for $20?"
Luke replied "I would if you added a bar of chocolate in the deal."
Kristin laughed as she said, "I don't have $20 dollars or a chocolate bar with me."
Luke turned and looked at me, "Okay Evelyn, truth or dare?" Uh no way am I picking dare now.
"Truth" I said meekly. He grinned. OH no, he grinned! Why did I agree to this?
"Name all the elements you control", he stated. The words were out of my mouth before I could object.
"Fire, Air, and Spirit". Those three words were giving me a headache. No, sorry, their reactions were giving me a headache. They're scared. Spirit involves the mind. Like mind reading, mind control, things like that. When people get scared, confused, or have a strong emotion when they're near me, they tend to project their thoughts. When they project their thoughts, it makes it a little too easy for me to hear them. Now with all these thoughts rushing at me, it's giving me a headache. Ugh, let's break the not-so-silent silence.
"Sophie, truth or dare", I asked.
"Dare!", she replied. Yes! Time for some mischief.
"I dare you to tepee the Mathematics room", I smirked as I told her.
"Fine! Let's go", she replied with composure. On our way we stopped by the restrooms and got some rolls of toilet paper. When we got there, Sophie went in and we all started snickering at what a surprise our math teacher, Ms. Sullivan, was going to have in the morning.
"Shhhh...", Luke warned. "Someone might hear us." We all waited. After a minute of hearing nothing inside the room I sighed and said that I was going to see what Sophie was doing.
"I'll go too", Max said. "I think something is wrong." When we went in, there was a desk knocked over, Sophie was standing near it looking down at something. The rolls of toilet paper were at her feet.
"What's wrong, Soph? You look like you saw a ghost", Max asked worriedly. Sophie didn't answer. There was no need to answer as we looked in the same directions as Sophie's gaze. Ms. Sullivan was dead.
