*Lieutenant Colonel Horace Emerson approaches the podium, standing before the GZDF flag* Fellow Gaians, heed my call. A plague is coming, one which could wipe all life from this world. I speak of the horror of horrors, the living dead. If we do not work now to prevent the zombie scourge from setting decayed feet on our precious soil, then we face annihilation at their hands. When an army of ghouls is beating against your doors uttering their hellish moans, will you cower in fear, eventually becoming one of them as their broken, yellow teeth sink into your warm flesh or that of your loved ones? Or will you stand with us, join our battalion, and fight this encroaching menace? If there is no more room in Hell, we will make some! They may not come today or tomorrow, but prepare we must! Organize before they rise! *Colonel Emerson steps away from the podium*

AIM: The mission of the GZDF is to safeguard the citizens of Gaia against the lurking threat of widespread zombie infestation. To this end, we maintain a standing battalion capable of immediate deployment to hot zones throughout the world.
OPEN TO ATTACK: The GZDF is only open to attack from reanimated human corpses, i.e. zombies, that fit the Max Brooks definition. For a comprehensive overview of the living dead, refer to The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.
STORY: The GZDF was founded in late 2006 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Horace Emerson, USAF. Following the outbreak of 2004, a joint effort was undertaken to prepare for another possible disaster, covertly funding and equipping the organization under the highest security. Personnel from various military services were carefully selected and quietly transfered to Colonel Emerson's command. Once assembled, the members of the GZDF were officially separated from their respective military branches and hold no affiliation with any government agency.
DESCRIPTION: The Primary Operations Complex of Fort Brooks is located in Death Valley, CA where the surrounding mountain ranges and Mojave Desert provide natural barriers against the living dead and human marauders respectively.
The complex consists of a headquarters building, infirmary, commissary, motor pool, landing field, gym/rec center, armory, ammunition storage point, CATM, fuel storage, water storage, power station, greenhouse, fallout shelter, K9 kennel, and three barracks houses. The motor pool houses seven M1038A1 and three M1025A1 HMMWVs, and the landing field has space for five HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, for motorized infantry and airborne cavalry/CSAR respectively.
Storage tanks contain one million gallons of pure water and twenty thousand gallons of gasoline. The armory contains 300 M16A2 assault rifles, 100 M4A1 carbines, 100 M249 SAWs, 100 L96 sniper rifles, 50 MP5A5 SMGs, 300 M9 Beretta pistols, and 100 M1911A1 Colt pistols. The ammunition storage point holds 100,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammo, 300,000 rounds of 5.56mm ammo (200,000 single rounds, 100,000 4+1 linked), 25,000 rounds of .45 cal ammo, 80,000 rounds of 9mm ammo, 250,000 rounds of .50 cal ammo, 1,000 M67 hand grenades, and 500 M18 smoke grenades.
The GZDF has a strength of 337 combatant personnel, including the battalion commander, divided into three companies, which may divide further into platoons, squads, and fireteams. The emphasis of the GZDF is on rapid-response, small-unit tactics for dispatching the undead. A K-9 unit is also maintained for the purposes of screening civilians who may be carrying the virus.
DEFENSES: The base is surrounded by a ten foot deep trench filled with punji sticks and one inch of kerosene. Within the trench is a perimeter wall made of concrete and reinforced with integrated steel beams, twenty feet tall, two feet thick, and topped with razor wire. Motorized, solid steel, sliding gates are located at the north and south ends of the complex. These, coupled with drawbridges to cross the trench, provide the only land entrances to the compound. Inside the wall, the base is partitioned into sectors (Alpha through Foxtrot) by ten foot tall chain-link fences. The structures themselves consist of concrete walls, steel-reinforced doors, steel-shuttered safety-glass windows, and multiple stories with easily destroyed staircases.
RULES:
BASICS -- No godmoding-remember, we're normal human beings with normal human frailties -- Follow the Romero/Brooks model of zombification -- Be descriptive in your roleplays--make it interesting AND believable -- Try to know what you're talking about in regards to weaponry, equipment, etc. (example: the M16A2 is not manufactured for fully automatic fire; it has safe, semi, and burst settings) -- Show good order and discipline, i.e. be respectful to everyone
APPLICATION --PM Horace Emerson or ClementScarborough (as written) -- All applicants must pass the Basic Entrance exam for admission into the GZDF. --To qualify as an NCO with the entry rank of sergeant, pass one test in the indicated category. Pass two tests to enter at the rank of staff sergeant. Pass all three to enter at the rank of sergeant first class. --To qualify as an officer with the entry rank of second lieutenant, pass one test in the indicated category. Pass two tests to enter at the rank of first lieutenant. --To receive a doctorate in zombiology (ZD) with the entry rank of captain*, pass all three tests in the indicated category plus one of the tests in the Officer Category.
*A member currently enlisted who obtains a doctorate does not automatically attain status as a commissioned officer. Commissions will be rewarded as slots become open and upon passing one of the officer qualifying tests. A member currently commissioned who obtains a doctorate will be immediately promoted to the rank of captain, unless said member is already equal or superior in rank.
-- accepted members must start a new profile for their RP character and equip the following uniform items (all found at Barton Boutique):
Anti-Terror Forest Camo Pants, 3200g Anti-Terror Forest Jacket, 3300g Black T-Shirt, 200g Anti-Terror Steel Toe Boots, 2100g
Total cost: 8800g
SUGGESTED ACCESSORIES:
Green (or Brown) Work Harness, 3050g (Crate & Apparel) Lawl and Order Belt, 911g (H&R Wesley) Stealth Evo Nightvision, 5100g (H&R Wesley) Army Helmet 700g (Gambino Hat Rack) Anti-Terror Forest Helmet 3800g (Gambino Hat Rack) S.W.A.T. Helmet 4995g (Gambino Hat Rack)
Hats and accessories will be entirely up to you for a little customization. Please use your profile as a means of defining your character, giving them a backstory.
*A note on names: I know I didn't state this before, but please, I ask that you use a "realistic" character name. Some very handy name generators can be found on the web, which Major Scarborough and I have both used in naming our characters. I won't make this a requirement, just a request.
In terms of role play, as an officer, you have command over the men in your platoon or company. Platoon leaders report to their company commander and the company commanders report to the battalion commander. You direct your men in combat and in many situations lead them as well. As an NCO you report to your platoon leader and lead your squad in combat. The battalion commander coordinates the offensive and defensive actions taken by the men under his command.
In OOC terms, officers are delegated authority to deal with problem members and reward outstanding ones. Punishments can range from demotion, to discharge. Rewards can range from some extra gold, a medal, or a promotion. NCOs mostly deal with less problematic members that don't require action from an officer. Either one is a position of responsibility and authority, one more so than the other. The battalion commander acts as a sort of GM, providing information on a given scenario to those participating in the role play.
ALIGNMENT: Overall, the GZDF is a law-abiding paramilitary organization with ties to legitimate military branches but without official affiliation and operating outside their authority. The GZDF has jurisdiction over all matters in which the living dead are involved or suspected to be involved.

Colonel Emerson sat alone in his office, reviewing the latest manning report. Shaking his head at the figures, he set down his coffee mug and scrawled a note to put in yet another call to Washington. The trouble of running an organization that was officially independent like the GZDF, was that trained personnel were hard to replace. Deputizing civilians wasn't an attractive option since the average citizen either didn't know how to handle themselves in combat or couldn't hack longterm Z-shock.
Lighting a match, Emerson puffed lazily at his pipe, savoring the tobacco for a moment before returning his attention to the stacks of documents on his desk. The Pentagon had been kind in its initial appropriation of materiel at Fort Brooks, had followed his recommendations to the letter, but resupply was where they fell short. Sure he understood there was a real war on, but like any commander he envied those others with perceived priority. Back when H2k4, as it had become colloquially known, was still a big deal things had been easier. The top brass was willing to accept the imminent danger of recurrent outbreaks from ghouls that had slipped through the sweeps and had supplied him immediately with whatever he requested. Now, supply drops were irregular at best, rare at worst.
"Speaking of Z-shock..." he said to himself, getting up and hading for the door. "I suppose it's time to have the new Alpha captain checked out in the Moaning Room."

Okamimaru knocked on the Colonel's office door. "Colonel Emerson?" he said. "I'm here for this 'Moaning Room' you were talking about. Sorry for eavesdropping."

Colonel Emerson opened the door and ushered Okamimaru into his office, gesturing for him to have a seat. "Captain," he said, puffing lazily on his pipe, "as you should know, the zombie moan is a potent form of psychological warfare. A soldier who can't handle Z-shock, as the shrinks call it, are no use to this outfit. The Moaning Room is a special place we have here at Fort Brooks to test the new recruits' stability. You'll be locked inside for one twenty-four hour period, surrounded by moaning, incapacitated zombie torsos secured to the walls." Emerson held up a hand to forestall the captain's inquiry. "Don't worry about them biting at you. Have you ever seen Silence of the Lambs? They'll be wearing those Hannibal masks. The psychs will be monitoring you and a guard will be posted outside. If you decide you can't hack it, just push the panic button on the console by the door. Good luck."

"I probably already know the answer for this but can i bring my katana?" Okamimaru asked, with no trace of fear behind his request. "Wait, don't answer that question, we have to save the moaning room for the soldiers. i can't go in there hacking them to bits. here, take my sword, i don't want the temptation."

Rolling his eyes, Emerson took the weapon and placed it on a shelf. "Not exactly standard issue, is it?" he asked dryly, pipe clamped between his teeth and turning his attention back to Okamimaru. "But I suppose blades don't need reloading, do they? Anyway, report to Dr. Chandra, the chief psychiatric officer, at the infirmary. He'll take you from there." With that, the colonel returned to his desk and the paperwork that lay before him.

Okamimaru laughed nervously as the Colonel left. Making his way to the infirmary, Okamimaru thought to himself, i wonder if i can get a tank? "Probably not going to happen." He said out loud. Opening the door to the infirmary, Okamimaru stepped inside greeted by a man standing in front of a glass window looking into a dark room. Okamimaru greeted the man back of course, asking his name.

"My name is Dr. Chandra, now if you'd please follow me." he said. The two men made their way down a short corridor to a large bolted door, on which was marked in big bold letters "WARNING, 'LIVE' ZOMBIES. PROCEED WITH CAUTION." Dr. Chandra stopped and turned around, "This where I say 'Don't worry, they won't bite' and 'if you need to get out and are too scared tocontinue, press the panic button', but with all those formalities aside, good luck Captain." Okamimaru held out his hand for a handshake. "Thank you Doctor, I'll see you in 2400 hours." Taking the handshake, Dr. Chandra opened the door, releasing the moan of several incapacitated zombies. "I'm not gonna pres the panic button." Okamimaru said. "That's what they all say. and that's why this place is so empty," the Doctor replied.

As Lt. Newland arrived on base, he proceeded to Hq to meet with the installation commander. As he got off the chopper he brushed off the dust from his uniform, god he hated his job, but someone had to do it.
As he left the pad and proceeded to HQ, he observed the interior of the base and smiled, he might like it here. Upon entering the facility Newland awaited to see the Colonel and his men, at the Colonel's door, Newland gave one strong knock and awaited to be acknowledged.

Looking up from his paperwork, Colonel Emerson called out, "Enter!" and reached for the next personnel file. 1st Lieutenant Ark Newland, a promising young officer with combat experience in Iraq, he'd already gone through his Z-shock at the Willow Creek E&E course usually reserved for pilots. As the LT entered, Emerson motioned to the chair before his desk and said, "Please be seated."
