British Metal - First original wave of what was considered "true metal sound". Started with Black Sabbath.

Examples: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest

Power Metal - Heavier form of Heavy Metal mostly relying on the shredding power of the guitars. Usually fronted by two guitarists.

Examples: DragonForce, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Kamelot

Speed Metal - Originated from Thrash Metal but playing a faster pace with more riffs instead of solos.

Examples: Motorhead, MegaDeth, Grave Digger

Thrash Metal - Categorized by the double bass drum and distorted bass sounds. Pioneered by the "Big Four".

Examples: Metallica, SLAYER, PANTERA, Anthrax

Black Metal - Essentially music dealing with lines along with Anti-Christ and anti-Christian music. Highly influenced by religions.

Examples: Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate

Doom Metal - Categorized more with heavier beats and slower paced guitar styles and solos. Genre was originally founded by Black Sabbath.

Examples: Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, Cathedral

DEATH Metal - A form of speed metal with faster paced guitar riffs, distorted basslines, and pounding drums. But mostly recognized by the brutal screams and growls and horrific lyrics surrounding death.

Examples: Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Mortuary, Deicide

Glam Metal - Created in the 80's it was a mix of old fashioned heavy metal and some parts of British metal. Coined by MTV during the late 80's, also sometimes referred to as "Hair Metal".

Examples: Poison, KISS, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot

METALCORE - A fusion genre that emerged in the late 80's a fusion of thrash and punk music. Still has the double bass kick like in thrash metal but lyrical styles and vocals more punk rock style.

Examples: Nuclear Assault, Biohazard, Killswitch Engage, Zao

Progressive Metal (a.k.a. Prog Metal) - Defined by more power metal style guitars filled with intricate and complex compositional structures.

Examples: Dream Theater, Tool, Symphony X, Opeth

Symphonic Metal - Defined more along the lines of black metal musical stylings with operatic style vocals. Most commonly mistaken with Melodic Black Metal.

Examples: Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Dimmu Borgir, Tiamat

Grindcore - Extreme form of crust punk filled with metal riffs and blasts. Commonly mistaken for DEATH Metal.

Examples: Napalm Death, a**l c**t, Carcass

Celtic Frost actually started as one of the pioneers for Death Metal, not Black Metal (Note the fact that my profile is named after one of their songs) although some people would say that the bands newer sound ((Which sucks by the way)) has more of a black metal sound, but as I said they started off as one of the first Death Metal bands.
