As it stands in America there is a legal drinking age of 21. I've never really took an interest in this simply because I'm 16 years old and could care less about it but today my English teacher brought up something very interesting ( or at least it was interesting to me) about the legal age of drinking. He brought up points about how he finds it to be very odd that your have to be 21 to go down to the bar and have a drink because drinking impairs your senses and ect but then why at 18 are you able to harm your self with tobacco and vote. Why is it that at 18 a man/woman can kill for there country but the cant go and have a beer at the bar down the road. What's the deal with that. Topics for discussion -should we raise the drinking age -why is it in other country's is there no drinking age -whats the medias effect on drinking -is this age for drinking causing a rises in binging over the last 10 years -what age do you think it appropriate (safe) for a person to drink cheese_whine

http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/HealthIssues/1119633942.htmlThat site has some interesting information on the topic, in case anyone wants it. I have no opinion. I don't, and will not drink, but I could care less what other people do, or at what age. As long as you know what you're getting into, and nobody else is being hurt by your choices, your body is yours to do with as you please.

It's actually a very simple reason. Tobacco harms your body. The only thing that messes with your brain is nicotine, which isn't permanent. Alcohol harms your mind and can cause serious damage if your brain isn't fully developed(not DONE, but fully), which doesn't happen until you're about 21.

Here in Germany you can drink light alcoholics with 16 and harder with 18. I am not sure when wine was raised to 18, I just noticed when buying a bottle with a friend and being asked for ID. I was about 21, so there was no problem... wink
Looking at the physiological aspect, I would say, 21 is quite okay.
But I, uhm, well I think, I first drank alcohol when being 14... redface
The age is not the problem, it is the responsibility you have with drinking. Some people freak out when drinking alcohol, they become aggressive and so. Some do really stupid things sweatdrop , some drive car and kill people...
It is hard to tell, how to handle this, because there are a lot of people who are older than 21 and although misbehave...
Luckily I have this little voice in the back of my head which I can hear very clearly when being drunk. It would keep me from doing really stupid things, when there would ever occur a thought of this kind to me... rolleyes

Topics for discussion -should we raise the drinking age Why? No one would abide by it, so few currently do as it stands! Quote: -why is it in other country's is there no drinking age Cultural differences. Quote: -whats the medias effect on drinking Set 'em up Joe! Quote: -is this age for drinking causing a rises in binging over the last 10 years 'rises in binging' and is in the past tense? I don't understand. Quote: -what age do you think it appropriate (safe) for a person to drink cheese_whine Me? Since birth. I have a strict mother that would kill me if I dared do anything stupid. I currently engage in under age drinking, but I have never been drunk. Others? Never let them have alcohol! I believe that the drinking age, ideally, should be lifted and it left to the parents to regulate. I don't necessarily think this is practical with our culture though.

I don't think 16 year olds should be allowed to drink. I am debating with myself between 18 and 21. I really think 18 but the drunk driving thing is what makes me hesitant to be for a change in the legal drinking age.

This has always been one of those "hot debates" that I've never really had a strong opinion on.
My parents never had strict rules about alcohol when I was growing up. It was in the house, everyone drank with meals...it was just never a big deal. As such, drinking has never been any sort of novelty for me. I like a good drink (my perferred poison depends on the setting), I discovered very quickly that I didn't enjoy being drunk, and that's that.
So I guess, due to the way I was raised, I just can't really get worked up enough to care much. I do think, however, that once you're a legal adult, you should be able to drink alcohol. It seems silly to give you all the responsibilities of an independent adult (voting, joining the military, paying taxes, etc.) but making you wait a few extra years to buy a beer. Never understood that.

I really agree with you on this because it does seem to me that In drinking the law cant really address the age in which one can handle drinking

Especially in Carnival, when is seems to be a sport getting drunk... Nine year old drunks are not a funny sight... sad the kinky boot beast sorry I worded that wrong. in a study about teen drinking they found that binge drinking was much more popular in the usa than in other countrys where the drinking age is lower and I was just wondering if people may think that is due to the high legal drinking age Hah! We have the infamous flatrate partys, where you pay a small amount and then are allowed to drink as much as you like. It went through the papers when a 16 years old killed himself which about 40 Tequilas...

It's not just young people who are prone to drinking and driving. My father is in his mid-thirties and hasn't had a license for the past 6 or 7 years. Yet he still drives, and probably still does it drunk. Some people just aren't very responsible.
A little underaged drinking is okay once and a while, like some wine at a wedding. If a parent or guardian is supervising then a drink or two with a low alcohol content is fine. I've endulged in underaged drinking before and I know it's stupid but it's something teenagers do at parties with their friends. I don't have a car or a license and I don't try to do things I know I can't handle, like 10 shots of tequila or a straight bottle of vodka.
