Hey!

Alternate Universe fanfictions (fics that take the characters and place them in completely different settings) are quite popular in Inuyasha fanfiction. And there are some REALLY well-written ones out there.

Unfortionately, it seems that the genre is bogged down with really, REALLY bad fics.

Let's discuss the pros and cons of Inuyasha AU fanfiction, including popular misinterpretations on the canon story because of them.

I absolutely LOVE Inuyasha AU's. Authors like Rozefire and Dolphingirl who stick the the character's personalities while creating a different world around them make for some really awesome reading.

My biggest pet-peeve misinterpretation about Inuyasha AU's: It's okay to change the character's personality (make them OOC) because it's an AU.

What are your thoughts?

I do love Alternate Universes when it comes to Inuyasha. Rozefire does indeed make some very awesome fanfiction in AU settings.

But I do not think it is ever okay to change the personality of the character. Some minor tweaks here and there on the character (not how they act) might be okay though.
Like if the AU is centered around Inuyasha living in present times, then it is okay to make him have pretty good knowledge on the world around him.
Though, it certainly doesn't mean he would be this polite fellow who would court a girl to a fancy dinner party and make lively conversation.

Exactly!

I don't count things like Inuyasha knowing modern devices as a change in personality, though. His personality should still remain intact. ^.^

3nodding Indeed.
Other minor things might change the personality just a tiny bit where it would not really matter (though I have no examples <<; I am just guessing there might be something some time that will come up).

But when they are a completely different person, I usually say "That is someone else with Kagome's face" or whatever.

x3 Though when it is a comedy and their personality is off, I don't really mind. I mean, it's for laughs anyway, right?

Well, the characters would obviously react to certain situations. Like, for example, if Inuyasha was raped, or something. He'd draw into himself and probably become really, REALLY depressed. He might even become suicidal.

He would not, however, cry constantly and cut himeslf, you know? There's a way to have him react to something extreme that's still IC. It's hard to do, but it's doable. xd

x3 I would see him get all in denial and mope around. Poor Inuyasha <<; It would be hard to put him in a rape scene. I can't see him doing the rape either.

I have seen, or rather read, Naraku in a lot of rape scenes. Especially involving Kagome.

1. Does Naraku even care about Kagome? It seems his hatred is targeted at Kikyou and Inuyasha.

2. gonk Would he care for sex enough to rape someone?

I think that the most fun aspect of writing an alternate universe is the challenge of keeping the characters in character even though their situations are drastically different than that in the series.

1. yeah, I would think that he'd rape Kikyou instead of Kagome. He did, after all, lust after her as a human. Of course, if he DID rape Kagome, he'd probably have someone do it FOR him. Naraku's a lazy b*****d. He's got someone to do EVERYTHING for him.

2. Unless it was Kikyou, no. Does he even have a p***s? Anyone? Anyone? lol.

We absolutely agree! It's so much fun to put the awkwardness of all their relationships in different settings.

The stories that bug me are the ones that get it totally wrong though. I will excuse half way there as far as characterizations, but when people take it to the extreme it irritates me. Like Kagome suddenly waking up one day as a demon/miko/goddess/greatest thing since sliced bread.

THAT would be the dreaded Mary Sue. *shudders* And is something that happens not ONLY to AU's but to cannon stories as well.

Which is really retarded and boring. Because we can't relate to a person that has no faults and that doesn't fall down every now and then.

I have quite the distaste for people inserting their own OCs into the Inuyasha world x3; Even though I have been guilty of this in younger days with different shows.

But it is funny to think that everyone says "Your OC is too mary-sue" but when it comes down to it, so are a lot of regular anime characters that people adore.
