Has anyone heard about this? Supposedly, the "ribbon" in the Mew's attacks is a mistranslation of "reborn". I can't explain it very well.... There's a section about it on Wikipedia, but it kinda sucks.

So, what do you guys think about it? Is "ribbon" the correct translation, or "reborn"? Or does it even matter?

I don't think it really matters. Personally I think Ribbon sounds so much cuter then Reborn. But if you think about it, in the Anime, you do hear the girls saying the first phrase of their attacks a bit long, making it sound a bit like Reborn rather then Ribbon.

I'm going to agree that it doesn't matter. The attack names don't affect the plot, or anything like that. And yet, there are still some people who will go crazy if you don't use the "correct" translation (i.e. the translation they think is correct). It really annoys me....

Moving on. In the Tokyo Mew Mew Official Fanbook, Ribbon/Reborn is written as "ribon", which means "ribbon". Everywhere else, though, it's written as "ribo-n", with a long O sound. This translates to "reborn".

Maybe the Anime company also got it wrong then?

Maybe. Or maybe it's just "ribon" with a long vowel for dramatic effect.

Personally, i think 'Ribbon' fits in better with all the girliness of the Anime , but I do think they say reborn. I like ribbon though, I sounds cute!

I don't think it's indicating towards a long o sound. I think it's a streched out short o.

Ribbon is much more likely to be the right translation.

Wikipedia isn't a trusted source.

Plus, I -really- doubt the anime and the English manga would've messed up.

I'm pretty sure it was Ribbon.

I read that it's been proven that the correct translation is Reborn, and that TokyoPop made a translation mistake.

Not only TokyoPop, but nearly every other translation company used "ribbon". None used "reborn".

I tend to like to use Ribbon. But it is actually reborn to be correct.

1. Reborn only works for Zakuro.
2. Ribbon is in both the Anime and the Manga.
3. The chances that they sound the same in Japanese is very slim.
RIBBON!!
