Tattoos, piercings, scarification, and other body modifications...they're controvertial in and out of religious circles. Arguments supporting such practises usually focus on freedom of expression and the right to do with our bodies what we will; to "decorate our temples in ways that we find beautiful," at the risk of sounding a bit like a hippie. Arguments against them range from the fact that God made us how we are and we should respect that, to the fact that some people just find certain modifications flat-out ugly.
So, what are your feelings? Why are some body modifications, such as pierced ears on girls, seen as perfectly acceptable while others aren't? Do you find piercings, tattoos, and scarifications acceptable? Why or why not? Do you find them attractive on others? Would you get or consider getting some kind of body modification? What's the line between body modification and self-mutilation? Is there one? Any other thoughts?

Personally, I think that person's body is theirs to do with whatever they choose, especially in matters so harmless as tattoos and self piercings. I don't really mind them, although I do find ones in or around the mouth somewhat unattractive, and I wouldn't get a tattoo because my skin takes badly to things like that, and I wouldn't want to risk it. (I'm allergic to henna and latex.)
I did want to bring up two things though, which is ritualized tattoos and body modifications, such as in Africa, or Asia, where it was a coming of age sort of thing. They meant status, in a very different way than they do around here. The only even remotely similar thing I can think of would be like Navy tattoos, but it's not really the same thing.

Well, as someone who has a nose piercing I should keep a low profile... lol I think, it is your free choice, and it is mine to find it attractive or not.
Some piercings or tattoos are just awkward, like the degrading called "Arschgeweih" (a** antlers), a tribal above the small of your back. Every girl which was "in" needed one. Unneccesary to say that these things are now out. xd (Was it also so bad in other countries with this tattoo?
The whole status thing of tattoos+piercings: Funny how cultures try to seperate themselves from others, isn't it? They all have something to do with beauty ideals the neighbouring clan would never like.
Yeah, the lower back tattoo, although we didn't call them "a** antlers", seems like everyone needed one.

"Tramp stamp" is another name I've heard for those.

SinfulGuillotine So, what are your feelings? We should be free to 'decorate our temples in ways that we find beautiful'. :nods: Quote: Why are some body modifications, such as pierced ears on girls, seen as perfectly acceptable while others aren't? They are modest, I think. Well...at least the simple lobe piercing. And not on boys because God-forbid a male wish to accesorize himself with anything more than a hat and a paint ball gun. Quote: Do you find piercings, tattoos, and scarifications acceptable? Why or why not? Sure! It is as acceptable as clothing. Beautifying oneself, using oneself as a canvas for art, ect. ect. More power to those who do it! Well...unless one is in prison or a gang. Then more power to you if you have one of the ones that says you are in an authoritative position. Not the one with a pair of eyes on the small of the back. Quote: Do you find them attractive on others? I don't generally like facial tattoos, but others (assuming they are well done, and not cubist) I generally like. Quote: Would you get or consider getting some kind of body modification? I had pierced ears. Cleaned them daily. Infected. Over and over. I let them close. I do plan to have a tattoo, either on my arm or the small of my back. Maybe my hip. Small. Quote: What's the line between body modification and self-mutilation? Is there one? Mutilate - Quote: 2 - To disfigure by damaging irreparably 3 - To make imperfect by excising or altering parts. Damage - Quote: Harm or injury to property or a person, resulting in loss of value or the impairment of usefulness. So they are synonymous if one finds body piercings or tattoos to make imperfect the body. If one does not, it is synonymous at the point in which the piercing or tattoo would inhibit usefulness.

Personally I dont plan on getting a tattoo just because its so permanent, although i have no issue with anyone else getting one.
Also, in the youth group at my church we made shirts with "Body Piercing Saved My Life" on them, refering to jesus on the cross, so I suppose thats a good rebuttle to people that have religous reasons not to get body art.
just a thought...

Well, due to the fashion that was actual then, no it was not pssible to hide it. Even if you tried to look decent, half your bum was hanging out... sweatdrop Okay, I'm exaggerating, but it was almost so.
I would like a tattoo on my shoulder. Classical but not overused and discrete...
But I think I do not want it enough because it is still too expensive in my opinion. (But nontheless I fell in love with a motive. Simple black, a phoenix made up out of flames... ^_^)
