YE OLDE SHOPPES GUIDE

Things to explain here: what are the shops & how do they work. What can you get in each?

GEMS

Gems are the currency used within the premises of the guild and you can earn gems via various forms of participation. The more common gem is called a Sapphire Gem. These are generally awarded to characters upon completion of an 'official' battle but are often simply awarded for general roleplay activity. Star Gems are harder to earn and are gained when your character has participated in a successful Hunt. Because these gems are harder to obtain, they can be traded in for bigger prizes. It is also possible to trade in Sapphire Gems for Star Gems.

Sapphire Gems can be traded for the following:
    Pets
    Dyes
    Potions
    Various Odds & Ends
    Star Gems (10 Sapphire = 1 Star)
Star Gems can be traded for the following:
    Job Advancement
    Mounts at Level 3
    Stat Increases
At the request of our character artist, gems cannot be traded in for anything that requires altering character lineart. If you want to wear a goofy hat, that's something to request when the initial artwork is made.

Gems are non-transferable, however players may purchase all of the preceding for another player except for Star Gems and Job Advancements.

COUPONS

Occasionally a Division Head will give a character a coupon for use in one of the stores. These coupons can be for discounts off purchases or sometimes even a free item! It's hard to say what will cause a division head to pass out a coupon, but it's a good idea to be on your best behaviour!

PLAYER-CREATED SHOPS

Players are welcome to and encouraged to set up shop on the guild grounds. The only restrictions we are placing on player-created shops is that they are not allowed to profit off other players, be it in gems or Gaia gold (and of course Gaia TOS apply) and that they cannot effect the battle system or be something available in an official shop (those marked with [O]). Other than that, you're welcome to do whatever - sell coffee, sell stuffed animals, sell lap dances.. well, maybe not that last one.

Roleplay with your customers and have a good time!

ON THE MATTER OF ITEM CREATION. If you have noticed, Auguste and Sisel, who are PCs, both have item creation abilities. A character whose class specializes in potion creating (i.e. a chemist or a witch who specializes in brews) would be able to create potions according to their level, but the average mage cannot do this.

Additionally, we're going to limit creation and boosting of items like Auguste does. For all intents and purposes, his services should be regarded as the duties of an NPC, and his player does not get to make items for themself for free. Though his player roleplays him as a PC, his store serves as a tool for others to roleplay with and the player does not make a gem profit off it. PCs may not create items that give them stat bonuses (+1 to melee/ranged/magic, +10 to HP, etc.).

If you have made a character that you specifically want to be an inventor, you can come up with one new invention a week (for personal use) and in order to create it you must pay a small sapphire gem fee for the materials. PM one of the moderators or the mule and we'll get back to you with whether or not the concept is acceptable and how much it'll cost to make it. Inventors do not gain the ability to make special effects permanent on an item until 3rd level. Here's what you can do at each level:
LEVEL ONE One-time use items. (After being used, the item breaks.) Small scale effects.
LEVEL TWO Limited use items equal to magic bonus. (An inventor with +3 to magic can make an item that can be used three times before it breaks.) More potent effects.
LEVEL THREE Permanent magical effects. You can use the item as much as you like and it'll keep working. More intricate or powerful effects.

FAQ

My character comes from a very rich background, can he start with gems?
Only under special circumstances (such as an auction, etc) will characters be allowed to enter the game with gems in their inventory (and even then it will be a very small amount determined by the mods). Unfortunately the gems are a very location-specific form of currency so it is unlikely your character has previous access to them. However, our tavern would be more than happy to take your gold from you.

Why are Sisel and Auguste allowed to run stores for gems?
Sisel and Auguste do not receive the gems spent on their items and are acting in an NPC capacity in this instance. The gems disappear into Mr. Bank's vault like in any other store.

Why are the Division Heads allowed to pass out coupons and gems that don't effect their own inventories?
As with the above, the Division Heads do not personally benefit from their ability to pass out gems and coupons and they are acting in an NPC capacity when they do this. However, we feel that limiting these four characters simply to NPC status would make them far less accessible to other characters - the Division Heads should grow to be not just your mentors, but also your friends.

Can I give an item/pet/etc to another player?
The only thing specifically non-transferable at this point are gems. This is because we don't want people who are never active in the roleplay to be able to job advance with minimal effort. (This is also one of the reasons that the occasional gem sales are limited and expensive - 210k for the 30 Sapphire Gems necessary to proceed to the next level should be a deterrent.)

That said, anything else is fair game, however the exchange must be roleplayed. (i.e. Mushkin A gives Human B a love potion in hopes that Human B will convince Lamia C to drink it. This would be a very Mushkin-like thing to do!)

In addition, players must alert the mods of the exchange via PMing the shop mule or posting in Mr. Bank's thread so that records can be properly updated to reflect the exchange.

Does that mean I also need to alert someone when I use up an item?
It certainly wouldn't hurt for the sake of our record keeping. Item usage in battles are easily tracked by the mods, but joke potion usage would be a good thing to notify us about. We will try to keep track of everything happening in RP threads, but it's possible we can miss something.

Why should I bother roleplaying with the shopkeepers?
Roleplaying with the shopkeepers gives your character the opportunity to drive down the price of their purchase, be it by haggling, flirting, etc. Sometimes shopkeepers will be sticklers, but persistence often pays off!
