In the General Discussions forums perhaps we should put in a sticky that would be changed out every week or so and be called "Topic of the Week" This way we can encourage member involvement and discourage inactivity by having a reliable topic base. Once the week is over the topic will just be removed from the sticky and let into normal rotation and be kept alive by interest alone but another topic will replace it in it's spot.

The topic could also be a variety of different things then of varying degrees of seriousness. One week it could be chatterbox worthy like "Should gold keep his new spiffy clean shaven look or let his goatee grow back?(w/pix!!!)" to extend discussion like "How real is global warming? And is the threat as bad as the media portrays?"
