When you buy comics, do you buy them in the original monthly issues, or get them in a collected volume? I usually buy them in the collections, but I'm not sure if it costs more or less for them.

Trades cost less usually.
But I buy them weekly. Occasionally I get trades. Just depends on what it is.

I would say monthy because once they get old enough, they will be worth a lot more when they are single then all of them in a collective book. Plus there is no sence in missing out on good cover art.

for the main titles i follow, i get monthly/bi-monthly depending on what it is. i get trades of other comics i don't follow regularly or discovered after they'd been running for awhile.. like ultimate spider man.. i got the first 6 trades.. certain minis i'll wait til the trade is out. i really should get a subscription i guess.. it might actually save me a bit of money in the long run...

For me it depends on the series. I buy Runaways in trades, but I buy my X-Men and Birds of Prey monthly. I don't tend to have the patience to wait for them to come out in trades, espically with Astonishing X-Men.
