Does anyone know how the mind occasionally manages to fit a dream that lasts several times longer than how long the person was dreaming into that time? I mean, one time I had a dream that lasted a year to me (Not to mention it was incredibly real and vivid), yet it only lasted one night in real time. One time I heard of someone who had a dream that seemed to him of lasting twenty years!
So, how does our mind do it? Is it simply that our mind world and the real world are disconnected from each other? Or is there some perfectly acceptable scientific phenomenon?

I read somewhere that every moment of a dream occurs simultaneously and is simply interpreted linearly.
I don't really know much on the subject myself, so I'll go with that.

Our concept of time is something that exists/or was created for our concious lives. I.e We created time to organise our daily lives. Our subconcious has no idea of the concept because it wasn't something we were born with but something we created.
That sounded really good as a explanation in my head but I think its come out a little confused. If anyone can take the general concept I'm trying to explain and readjust it. Please do.

I know that in meditation and altered states of consciousness there seems to be a time dilation effect. That means that while I have only been meditating for a few minutes it may feel like an hour to me. Sometimes it's the opposite effect though. I've meditated for a half hour and it feels like only a couple minutes.
If the mind can do that with states of consciousness not as deep as sleep, I imagine it can do it during the sleep state.

I am Actually A person that used to Be highly involved with the Study of Dreams despite my age. My dreams were vivid and Very long. Plus i even learned things I never knew in these dreams. I am still currently writing two to three books. One is completely fictional, about a person I dream about. He was a charecter. Another is what I have learned through dreams and another is what I have done in Dreams. I believe that Dreams somehow slow the brain waves while still sending images quickly. Therefore, The brain only thinks it is Longer.
I wouldn't like to believe that though... One of my books state that The Dreams that oocur are another plain of existance only achieved through Sleep. Also I would like to mention Lucid Dreaming, A state where you can actually control What your being is doing in the dream. I still have not obtained Lucidity do to the fear of being mauled by a giant monster in my head.
Sorry for the Long Speech. Dreams are my expertise...

interesting, could you please go into a bit of detail about the year dream, like if you missed real life or you didn't realize only a day passed when you woke and was expecting a year to have passed ext.
i believe in astral projeting so when you dream you're in the astral plane and time slows down a lot and when your astral body merges with the physical it is said that you down load what ever happened in the astral plane, which may explain the reason why its so hard to remember

Freaky monkey ******** suit,Personally, I am betting everything on dreams and dream-like states, such as comas, as being separate from the time flow that the body occupies.
I have had dreams that take mere minutes, and yet my body goes through the entire night. Which is really the opposite of yours, but still seems to fit the discussion. bleaugh!

There are several Dreams of Mine that have seemed to have lasted Several months. A couple of them Were while Practicing ucid Dreaming. Which was great, because I have more control over what I was able to do. Although, Last Night in Paticular I had laid in bed trying to concentrate on my Goal of Lucidity, when I closed my eyes and fell asleep. Only think I could see was this disgusting face of some human thing. Broken teeth, no lips. He told me to discontinue whatr I was doing. And I opened my eyes and checked my glowing clock. Apparently I had only closed my eyes for a second. Then I got the creepy feeling of being watched. Iopened my window blinds and saw nothing. Then, Even though the realism of all this... I had woken up at about 1 in the morning with my blinds closed. What the heck? My room is locked and I am the only one in there? Was all of it a dream? It was way to real.
A dream I had last summer, I keep a journal. It was about craziness. I was attempting to Rob somebody next door when stopped by thier dog. The dog smiled and Flat out said the word, "Wishka". Spelling is probably off. But it sounded like somebody was really speaking. So i was amazed and Went back to speak of it with my Grandmother. As soon As I told her, I was bound in chains by some unknown force and I was forced to watch gruesome things. I never saw anything like it in my life. A mad man had a saw and he was sawing open somebodies head. Then there was a dead guy rocking back and forth in a chair he was dead. A dog was howling as this guy cut it open. It was just wrong.
After Much research on that Dream, I discovered that Wishka is a street in a Washington State. It is also the name of a WWII Pilot. But Why should i care? It was only a dream. But Do all dreams have Meaning? I wish to one day know the answer.
Sorry for such a long post. I love these kinds of topics.

Hrm... I always seem to have very short dreams. At most, it may simulate an "afternoon", but usually it's just thirty minutes or less.
I'm curious as to maybe it has to do with my ADD... Mind proccess is faster and all that.
And actually, in the end, you only dream during REM sleep, which only lasts about 90-120 minutes (20-25% of a dream)

Sorry for such a long post. I love these kinds of topics. 1. Screw you for scaring me shitless with that post. It's the middle of the night right now... 2. Anyways, I usually have dreams like that, where it seems as though something in my dream doesn't want me to dream any further. I'd explain more, but I'm too creeped out right now. 3. No DXM trip for me tonight... Don't want to imagine what I might see...

It was incredibly vivid, and I still think sometimes that the only reason it can still be considered a dream is because it only lasted a night. But hey, maybe it wasn't a dream. Maybe the forces in the world made sure that my whole journey in their world wouldn't interrupt my life in my own world much. Who knows. All I know is I want back in that world, whether it really be just a dream or if it really is another world. I have a lot of friends back there, whether they exist or not. Meh.
