It is my firm belief that people should make their own costumes.
Wait, that makes me a hipocrite doesn't it, cause I'm making my boyfriends costume. DOH!
Well, I dunno. I just feel people lose alot when they commission, often times it's ALOT cheaper to just make the costume yerself. Take Ruby Moon from CCS for instance, people commission that outfit for upwards of 500 dollars! I can make that for under a hundred, and it's not even that tough! A straight skirt, a princess seamed tube top, a stylized collar, a brooch and coat hangers with black netting over em, and there's alot.
I'm not saying that there are some places with good prices, I'm just pointing out that you not only appreciate the costume more when you make it yourself, but you save alot of money. Not to mention picking up new skills. You need to know everything to be a decent cosplayer, not just how to sew, though that is the bases.
Alright, I'll shut up now.

While you're right about it being cheaper, it takes up a lot of time and it's frusterating finding all the parts, especially since anime clothing can often have a style of its own. I commissioned my edward costume last year and got very good feedback. The costume was shipped to me easily and it was a low price. Places like studio 34, though, offer high prices and low-quality items with slow shipment. I had ordered a halloween Sora costume for Halloween and got it ON HALLOWEEN after waiting a month. The costume was nothing like the picture described and I was expecting a keyblade, real boots, a completed pumpkin mask, and pants that fit and were fluffy.
The pants I recieved did not fit, they were to small and too short, I used my edward cosplay pants instead, The shirt came apart that night because it was poorly GLUED and I had to make the pumpkin mask on my own. So it's looking better than when I purchased it but you have to be careful. I'm looking to sell it again if anyone is interested, its lower price than what I bought it for.
I'm never doing business with studio34 again. I'm not doing this to point out hate, you must be careful who you commission from if you do decide to commission.

This year I made my own costume and my mother and I had a lot of trouble. The costume is incomplete but we're not going to go out looking for black shorts to put over the pants under the skirt. The only thing still missing is white shorts for my Misa cosplay on Sunday.

Thank you both very much for your own opinions and advice. =D

Yes, I'll agree that it's true making your own costume is cheaper than commisioning but some people simply don't have the time and effort to put into that. o.o And so, they commision people to make their cosplays.

But as I Touched a Rockstar! has pointed out--

And also, trying to make your own costume or even an attempt can help you pick up new skills as well as save you a lot of money. Stated from Mineka_C

I'm going to Anime Boston.
I'll admit that for my first cosplay ever I did get my costume commissioned only because I don't know how to sew patterns for the specific shirt type. it was a great price too and they even made it custom sized. For next year i plan to make my own cosplay unless I do an akatsuki member where I'll probably end up committing suicide because of the cloak.
And its only 11 days away.

Well, if anyone wants to give making their own cosplay a shot, I'll be happy to help. What with all the costumes I've made, I'm really good at manipulating patterns to work with, the often times unique ways of, anime clothing.
Granted my metal working skills could use a bit of work, but my dad doesn't let me near the power tools.

For Sora, did they only have a month to make the costume, or did you commission it earlier and they said they would get it to you by so-and-so, and it came a month late?

I'm going to Anime Boston.
If you could teach me how to make an akatsuki cloak I would love that. My friend said I would make a good Itachi. But I'm trying to consider a lot of things. I could be agent paper from ROD or that one girl from Azumanga Daioh.

Mineka, do you think you could show me some pointers on how I could make Kazuma's jacket? Its for my boyfriend for next year. We were going to commission it. I was thinking of making my own Eureka costume but they have cheap ones on ebay.

We ordered around the end of September I think but it was supposed to have been already made since it was a pre-made one but what I got and the picture were two totally different things. They said they would have it done waaaaay before Halloween and my mom paid extra to have it shipped extra fast which it was slow. xP Selling that around halloween unless someone wants to buy it now xD
