Why is it that people don't want to take the time to teach people the ways of things when they're new? In fact, often times, people see it as an opportunity to take advantage of the poor souls. When I joined Gaia, I got at least two messages asking for my password in exchange for gold. What is it that motivates such behavior? Besides, if we don't educate those who don't know....aren't we only left with the ignorant? We were all beginners once. Why do people lose sight of that? Why do we shun the novices instead of leading them to higher plateaus of enlightenment?

Truthfully, I think people are inherently evil. They can't help it. It was a matter of survival and we've never truly left that mindset. Yes, we teach that its wrong to steal and take advantage of people, but all we really teach is that it's only wrong if you get caught. So when someone new comes along we think fresh meat, easy target, free gold. The way we look at it, we pried our own way through, on our own, and we made it out alive. Why should we help? Shouldn't we test them to make sure they're really worthy of being in our realm?
Occasionally, you'll find someone who's kind and willing to help....but really, we just got brainwashed by all that media we watched as kids that preached treating people right. Left on our own, we'd fight tooth and nail for everything we got and to hell with all who got in the way.

people in general are selfish. They only care about themselves and can't see further than that. Most people are unable to look past themselves and see that other people are more important than them.
Now this isn't to say that this is the way all people are but generally in the world of gaia (which is overrun by mindless teens, not that teenagers are bad,..just kinda lost, which is fine because everyone gets that way once in awhile) people are out to take advantage of others so their pixels are better than other people's.
what can we do about this? not a whole lot. Just try to help people out knowing how it was when you were new. As long as there's something to aspire to there are going to be people that try to do backhanded things to obtain those aspirations. You can't get rid of that you can only hope that those people will notice and change themselves.

I don't think that people are inherently evil. I agree more along the lines of what Ryoruki said. People are selfish. I believe that we are neither good nor bad. It's just that doing bad/evil things are usually the things that get us instant gratification. It takes more time and/or effort to readjust your scope to include the well-being of others.
I've actually helped lots of new people. If I talk to someone who is obviously new, and see that their sig is messed up, I PM them asking if they'd like help with it. 3nodding But, there are a lot of people out there who, in certain cases, could care less about someone's happiness.
