After reading my latest National Geographic issue and the story about the elephant poachings and just listening to the nightly news with all the deaths and poachings occuring in the wild and the encrouchment of mankind on all the habitat worldwide - is there more or less room for zoos and their protection, education, and breeding programs?

Well, as long as a Zoo is well maintained and the people there are cool with animals then yeah, I'm all for them! Still, there are a few Zoos that should revise their hiring policy. I don't know if you've heard but the Minerva Zoo here in Guate (in the city of Quetzaltenango to be precise) had a lion and they practically starved it to death. It's horrible how some people treat animals!

I hadn't heard that! I also felt bad for the zoos in the areas the hurricanes hit!

Zoos can be a good thing. They help preserve and call attention to the world's dwindling wildlife. Zoos today. are much better today than the small-cage manageries of the past. Still, good zoos are very expensive to maintain. My very favorite "zoo" is the San Diego Wild Animal Park. There the animals are kept in large mixed (except carnivores obviously) enclosures meant to represent different continents. Much of it is only viewable either via tram, a hike along an unpaved trail or, for a special price, a safari style jeep ride through the enclosures (have never done this).

Seaworld is not really a zoo, but it serves a good lesson for the educational value of these types of parks. Before Seaworld was established Alaskan fishermen nearly wiped out the indigenous Orca, believing they were competition for the salmon. People didn't seem to care, but really they just didn't know. When Shamu became famous people suddenly knew - and cared - about the Killer Whales, and this helped save them from extinction.

I feel bad for the animals that are mainatined in enclosures.

Zoos offer people an opportunity to view the animals and be able to appreciate them.

That's right SK, very good point. I rather go to a zoo than to a circus any day.

But gee, those activists are just inhumane. Asking the zoo to kill the bear. Who do they think they are!?

zoos are educational and fun for little kids. though some hurt animals there are others that dont. then again animals are being hurt and helped in or out of captivity. we might as well keep the zoos for now so that you kids, grand kids and great grand kids ect. can say "i remember when i was young, we used to have these animals called spider monkeys. i saw one at a zoo once. it was a fun place where there were a whole bunch of different animals we dont have today. now ill tell you more as soon as you get grandma/grandpa more jello."

well, there are some hard core old people who love to put their teeth to use. my mom hardly has teeth so she sucks on the meat until it gets soggy.
