Me and rhyming schemes do not always mix, so bear with me here.

I wrote this yesterday (and it's the poem I submitted in my request to join smile )

Witness

One night as I lay upon the boards
And watched the shadows fall
I made not a whisper nor a sound
And I swear, I saw it all

For there beneath the candle bed
Where the dead moths lie
I know I saw her with that knife
Out of the corner of my eye

No one will believe me
But I watched the crimson rise
As I saw it slice the flesh
I heard her silence and his cries

I watched in terror from my cot
Unable to do a thing
And realized quite suddenly
This weight could not be bared by any nuptial ring

Now they've taken me away
Prisoner of soul and body
For I was too shocked to plea an alibi
In the darkness of the courtroom that solemn day

The blood that betrayed me
As I tired to heal those wounds
Is never far from my mind
As I remain and listen to the loons

And now I call out to you
For I have nothing left
Free me from injustice
Lift this burden from my chest

Why would I, so gentle
Commit such a blatant homicide
How could I, so truthful
Tell such awful lies

So please regard my promise to you
Because I remember what I saw
Beneath the candle bed that night
And what I could not do
--------------------------------------------
And here's a poem I wrote in the whee hours of the morning, during a lovely period of insomnia:

The Spinning Wheel

Child, step a little closer
Come into my room
Why's there fear within your eyes?
I bring you hope- not doom

See my spindle, pretty dear
So ancient yet so fine
It has been cooped up all along
Waiting for you here

Don't be afraid now, darling
I shall teach how to sew
Just watch my hands whip 'round the thread
And surely you will know

Watch the wheel spin 'round and 'round
Feel the force within
Touch this spinning wheel if you dare
And tumble to the ground
------------------------------------------
I just finished this poem, working with one of my favorite phrases. I switched to more of a free verse becasue it helped get the point across

Memento Mori

Break the silence if you care
A force more powerful
Twisting round in the darkest places
Than any sound we hear

Worshipping down on the Earth
Deceived, believed, and left behind
Followers of moral and oath
Forgetting every tear

The highest hope
A dying candle only for the whisper
Never seeing how easily
The brightest moon lights up the night

The fallen and the hopeless
Deeming they are damned
Cloudless skies and Mocking eyes
The deepest scarlet anger blocking out true sight

Once upon the end of time
The worst and best epiphany
For good people do bad things
The epithet of loneliness lives eternally

Wishes shall forever be made
Living through the child
When you reach the gates of the core
Throw away demise and find the hidden key

Selfishness born from the darkest devils of the sea
Breathing and grasping inside each soul
The woods overflowing with promises untold
As we drown within our unanswered plea

A single flower never blooms
Were fiery lies have raged
Beauty's in the eyes of the beholders
Whoever they may be

Losing last bits of innocence
Passion and despair
Water pulsing through this cage
Hapless and without the slightest care

Choose your path or stay behind
Find who dictates truths and deceits
Spread the wings of uncertainty
And escape the devil's lair

Colliding in the endless universe
Vast and stoic all around
Chasing dreams and meaningless things
Slicing through what we find harsh and unfair

Life might as well be just a dream
Remember as you wake
For every soul will leave this world
Petty questions tossed aside
And every body left behind
Will decay beneath the Earth
--------------------------------------------

For whatever reason, writing about blood is sickeningly fun smile

Blood

Pulsing through my every vein
So lovely and so rich
Breaking through the skin
Soaking inch by inch around

Betrayed by those I trusted most
Left to rot and die
As I lay in scarlet rivers
The obsession was born within

As I gazed upon the crimson
Thicker than I could have believed
I wondered about its final destination
"Where thou taketh me I shall be"

Speaking as my vision faded
My tormentors' images subsided
I pictured flowing through the artery
Finding solace in the darkest atriums

A ruby channel of mystery
For now I slip away
Morbidly delighted by the proof
Left behind as I am slain

Thank you, maybe it just sounded weird to me because I hadn't written rhyming poems in a while.

I know the feeling. ^^ It's kinda hard to get started when you've been out of practice even if just for a little while. sweatdrop

I really like your poems, finally, someone has enough creativity to write long poems. All I would suggest would be to work on your rhythm and use of literary devices.

I was going to post any and all poems in one post, but, it would be to cramped I decided.... sweatdrop

The Lady of the Black Wings

That lady with her wings so fine
Hides within the vermin's fur
She drinks of our souls and finest wines
And hearkens to be heard

So many now have fallen
Into their solemn graves
Is it a sin to wonder why though we gave dedication
We are not saved

Mutilated, unconfined
Beauty of despair
As they summon the end of time
This dark age shows no sign of care

She comes within the dead of night
And morning’s first light
She spreads more quickly than
Our morbidity and inspires us through plight

Graves as far as the eye can see
Mourning wails break through
When the Lady of the Black Wings
Descends down on you

I like this poem much better than the others. You used more literary devices.

I really liked Witness. I remember reading it before just now, but I had failed to comment on it. I love how it tells a story so well. The abcb rhyme scheme through it does it justice. The poem gives the mind dark images. It's quite sad at the end, though. To be innocent taken as guilty in such a horrendous crime. And to witness it in the first place... Great writing!

I don't know about writing it, but I also found it fun to read about Blood in your poem. Your word choice was great in it. It really hits the reader. The flow of the poem itself isn't bad either. But, the most significant part of it is the imagery and morbid topic. Maybe that's only because death and blood has become very interesting to me over the months.

Still, great writing!

Waiting

In the shadows of the morning midnight
The "Inquisition" was rumored to begin
To drill their pagan gods within our minds
And fill our lives with sin

We ripped the crosses from our necks
And trembled by the ticking clock
We loosened corsets for it was hard to breathe
And waited for the knock

"Oh, I am terrified; I simply can not lie!"
"Be still and say not a word; they'l boil you alive."
The saintliest of all have become witches
And our guillotine is the fear we can not hide

The clocking is ticking still
As the rain carves its path upon the glass
I sit beside the window, feeling worry
Like a dark and heavy mass

Her fingers are stone and marble
With no bible to clutch
Her eyes wide and glassy within her head
Portraying doom and such

And then the knocking came
Startling me from my reverie
I slid slowly to the door, glimpsing her there
Hands covering up what she can not bear to see

The rain is thundering in my veins
Something inside is stirring, like passion, like pain
I fear what waits within the shadows as I peer through the glass
But the dark veil covers everything, and all I see is rain

----------------------------------------------------------------

Truth

The truth has been denied to be
But that is my mortal sin
Things I know but with disagree
I hide them all away

For once in my life
I would like to see
A rose without so many thorns
Not just a tall and rotting tree

For whom I seek to testify
My pale and panicked lies
Just believe in everything
And nothing can be denied

If I had the will to take this life
And turn it all around
Would I still be taken from
The heart that I called home

By personality confines
Morality and such
No matter what is taken back,
Nothing can be lost

For here in this solemnity
I've found my final truth
There's no one to dictate it
It lies within each and everyone,
Wise man and fool

Here at the end I've come to terms
With the blackness in my heart
To find the light I've realized
To halves may never part
