I'm not sure how many of you have seen this but there was a laser pad created by cnlohr and some of his friends. The pad runs completely on opitcial lasers instead of having electrical sensors touching through an opening to create a circut to register your steps. For those of you interested in creating this pad at home here is the link to the documentation. http://cnlohr.net/pics/padrelease/

simply put... wow... that sounds awsome.. but you'd have to tie you shoe laces really tied cause they fly around and break a beam and send off a signal.. that wouldn't be cool... i still think theirs some flaws with it, i mean, wouldn't you have to take your foot off higher in order to get the beams out of the way unlike any other pad where you just slightly lift your foot up and your free... or i dunno it's weird unless they sensors are really close to the base.. well i guess it's a good concept and wow it would like never break... eek

They have admitted that there are certain flaws with the current design of the pad but that's part of the reason they have released the plans for it. So that when people begin to construct their own laser pads that someone out there will create a better design and improve upon what has been made so far. As for having to lift your feet high, the current design being shown looks to be pretty thin compaired to the other model before it. Here's a link to the images of the current one: http://cnlohr.net/pics/newmat/New/DSCF0007.JPGhttp://cnlohr.net/pics/newmat/New/DSCF0004.JPG (note: big images, 56kers go to nonstop mode for a bit while it loads.) Also for reference, here is the link to the original thread: http://www.ddrmaniax.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=635

Hm..if they fix the flaws in it's current design, it looks like the Cobalt Flux and Afterburner will have a bit of competition.

Actually, since its public domain anyone can take the design and implement it into their products. So in the future we could possibly see laser Cobalt Fluxes and Afterburners.

Why? Making it Public Domain (like he did) makes it more likely that it'll be incorporated into other products faster. I'm guessing what happened is that he took it as far as he could, and realized progress would be much fatser if development proceeded in several places at once.

how much do you think it would take to make this?i have some pretty smart freinds maybe we could pull this off, but it's extremely complex (in my opinion) and how is it bootable, through usb? last time i made a dance pad (a cardboard one about a year ago) i just re-routed the keyboard arrows XD tape, telephone wire, and cardboard to make that pad, well yea some other minor stuff =p but yea what do you all here think is the probability of making one of these babies at home?

If I remember correctly they ripped apart a Playstation controller and mapped the sensors to the buttons on the controller. Although you can also take a defucnt DDR pad, strip the board out and use that instead which I might be doing soon.

Don't worry about being smart enough to make one. Its recommended that you should not attempt to create a laser mat since the process is still very experimental. Also (I believe this is due to power restrictions) this pad is still not compatable with Playstation 2s. However there are instructions for creating a metal pad from home materials which would cost you between 110 and 145 to make.
