I recently watched a TV show called 'Atlantis in the Andes'. Jim Allen took Plato's writing a did some extensive research into the existence of Altlantis. After watching the show I gave it a very high plausible.

Jim Allen took Plato's measurements and converted them into the system we now use and it led him to a dry lake bed in the Andes. At this location there are many man made canals that cannot be explained yet fit the description of Atlantis and when the lake was full would have been like the rings that circled the city. There is also an alloy of gold and copper which only occurs in the Andes with their native names being 'Alt' for water and 'Antis' for copper. Putting the two together you get 'Altantis'. Also the area is know for it's rainfall and earthquakes which could indeed cause a city to disappear in one day.

I decided to create this thread for discussion of 'lost' cities/civilizations and if they did indeed exist.

Discuss:

Lost cities and civilizations
What happened that all record of such places no longer exists.
History in general and how in the past people have twisted it or destroyed any documentation to suit their needs.

History is written by the victors. You never hear both sides of the story after a few centuries and the truth is lost. So are places forgotten. When they are wiped out by a natural disaster, people often forget about them after awhile. In ancient cultures, reading and writing were not common skills, nor did the means and knowledge last forever. We find things but are unable to interpret them. We can guess at best, but it is possible we are wrong. There has been countless evidence that suggests things mentioned in ancient mythology did exist. In Homer's The Oddesy there is mention of a pass between a vortex and a hydra (or something of the like, its been years since I read it) and scientists believe they've found a location in the Mediterranean Sea that could have been the location that the tale took place.

Then again, bards were both storytellers and historians.....is Helen of Troy just a story, or embellished history? We will never know.

That is true that history is written by the victors, but I think also that if the conquerors did not understand something or it did not fit what they consider "normal" then they simply destroyed any record of it and it was lost.

That's true too. Look at the pagans for example. A lot of their beliefs were misconstrued and frowned upon by the Christians. It still continues today. Generally "Pagans" are viewed in a negative light, and a lot of people who call themselves pagans are not. The funny thing is, we've incorporated a lot of pagan traditions into our holidays. Most people just blame it on corporate greed...but I highly doubt that's the truth. So why can't ancient cities and places have disappeared, destroyed by the victors? We may not be able to prove their existance now...but anything's possible.

There was supposed to be a country called Lynesse(sp?) that joined Cornwall and The Isles of Scicily that was covered in a great flood in the 1600s (I think), and written about by a monk. I think it is definatly possible that Atlantis could be in the Andes, maybe it was destroyed in an Earthquake, who knows.
