I just got Nanny Ogg's Cookbook from the bookstore (which I am THRILLED they had, because normally I have to special order any Discworld Books other than the main series) and I've just flipped through it, and I was wondering if anyone else here has it and if so, how the recipes turned out. And if I do make any of the recipes, I'll take a picture.

Rincewind's Potato Cakes are pretty good -- better than bought hash browns.
My brother and I made Wow-Wow Sauce, but we deviated from the recipie rather a bit after we found wasabi paste in the back of the cupboard. I think we ended up adding that, a fair amount of powdered chillies, and about a teaspoon of brown sugar. Remarkably, it worked rather well, serving its purpose as an explosive condiment for red meat admirably.
I made the dried frog pills for a joke present for a friend's birthday... but I think I added galangal or something as well as the cinnamon, because, made by the book, they tasted a little dull.
My brother an I tried to make Lord Downey's mint humbugs, but all we ended up making was a sugary, sticky mess. An edible mess, certainly, but a horrid mess none the less.
I've made something very much like the figgins before, so I imagine they would work well, too.
Once winter rolls around again, I fully intend to have a go at Slumpie with Clooty Dumplings... with some modifications, again.

I got mine autographed~!
And so far, Jammy Devils turned out nice, though a bit pork-tasting; I had to use lard instead of butter since I'm allergic. I assume with butter it's just simply scrum. I may try it with palm oil shortening to see if that works better.
Also, the Clooty Dumplings have become a bit of a house favorite. For some reason, we have a soft spot for adding sliced sausages to the pot, so it ends up being sausage and dumplings (with something green to benefit from all that gravy).
I am *dying* to try making the Quattro Rodenti Pizza. I just haven't got around to it yet...

As an extra note, I've not made too many of the recipes yet because I'm translating the ingredients into cups instead of millileters and grams, so...I think I've got about half the recipes translated so far.
Oh yeah, I've also made the Bananana Soup Surprise. Good times, my friend, good times. I put too much of the stuff into my blender to puree it, so the top exploded off and the kitchen and I were covered in hot banana soupy goodness. It buuuuuurns! Of course this was while company was over. To this day, my best friend, her husband, and my husband refer to it as "Emily's Banana Ambush". Ruddy sadists. stare

Autographed? Wow! That's really cool. Yes, I'd have to translate to cups also because I am absolutely clueless in... Well, most everything. Also, I can probably only make some of the desserts because I'm a vegetarian. I was thinking of attempting to make Angua's Vegetable Soup with Dumplings, and also maybe the Strawberry Wobbler. The Quattro Rodenti Pizza looks very good - I'd just substitute the meat for a veggie product! NannyOgg Oh yeah, I've also made the Bananana Soup Surprise. Good times, my friend, good times. Ohh, that reminds me of the time me and my friend were making smoothies and we stuck a wooden spoon in the blender while it was still going. Haha.

I've yet to see the Cookbook in my local bookstore, but I've got in on a disc. Whoever did the scanning had to be drunk, but thats what I get from getting it on a torrent. It's mostly legible, except for the ingredients. Due to that, I didn't actually know the recipes were edible. i just read it for the double and triple entendres. blaugh

Can you use coconut oil? Not the liquid version (although if room temp is rather high will it will liquify anyway) Coconut oil makes a wonderful alternative to butter since it spreads easily and has creamy nutty flavor that tastes actually very nice on toast and such. I have used it to pan fry many things that call for butter and had great success with it. I use organic but I am certain it wouldn't matter too much on flavor if you used a nonorganic brand.
Different brands are different in consistency so be aware of that if you haven't ever used it before. As an example one brand had coconut flakes in it which I did not prefer. The loevely thing about coconut oil is it makes a wonderful moisturizer if you find you don't like it in the kitchen!

I've used coconut oil as a massage oil, but never for cooking. whee I find the taste to be a bit overpowering. Then again, if I decide to make a variant with coconut flakes in, coconut oil would be just fine. Palm oil gives the least overwhelming taste, aside from crisco (I have relatives who can't have soy, so I learned to do without crisco anytime they're in town). It's just ghastly kinds of expensive.
