A Time of War
Chapter 1: The Group

A pale man with well-cut black hair, red eyes, with all sorts of gear and weaponry - that normally clipped onto a harness he wore over his flexible flak armour, but was now lying on the ground beside him - was looking through a pair of binoculars. He raised his hand and poked his comrade, “Hey Walrus M3, wake up,” he whispered.

Walrus had long blonde hair. He was dressed like someone not from this era. His face and skin were perfect and his eyes were like sapphires. Not like any human.

Walrus mumbled “Five more minutes...” He raised his hand as if to shoo away the pale man.

“Wake up dumbass!” he replied.

Walrus opened his eyes and yawned “What you want Vamp?” he asked.

“They’re coming,” Vamp replied.

“Really? You mean it?” Walrus was ecstatic.

“Yes really!” Vamp said, with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“Alright!” Walrus said he grabbed his walkie-talkie and hit the COM button.

On the end a man with cigarette in his mouth got annoyed as his walkie-talkie played an annoying tune. He grabbed it and yelled into it “For ******** sake Walrus, couldn’t you get a walkie-talkie with a less annoying tune?”

“Jesus, Barret, calm down. They’re on their way,” Walrus sighed.

Barret had shaggy hair, which was a light brown colour. He wore a black hoodie and fingerless gloves; the tips of his fingers were a kind of darkish grey colour. Barret got angry: “Well you would be if you got nearly killed and have radiation poisoning and you were only saved by a guy using something he had never tried before-" Then he asked: “Wait, did you say they're coming?”

Walrus laughed, “Same old Barret, yeah they’re coming!”

“Good!” Barret replied.

“Over and out!” Walrus joked.

Barret changed the frequency of the walkie-talkie and he hit the COM button. “Vicktor?” he asked.

The man Vicktor had dark brown hair with a scarlet fringe. He wore a red jacket, jeans, white vest and a shark tooth necklace. Vicktor lowered a bottle of bourbon from his lip. He gasped and then licked his lips. “You can’t beat bourbon!” he muttered.

“Hey Vicktor! Vicktor!” buzzed out of the walkie-talkie. Vicktor sighed and drained his bottle before throwing it away. A small smashing noise sounded as the bottle came in contact with a wall and shattered into a thousand pieces.

“Yeah?” Vicktor asked.

“Uh, they're coming. Vicktor, sober up or you’re not going to be any use!”

“Oh lighten up Barret!” Vicktor joked.

“Okay, just concentrate okay?”

“Me drunk? Hah!” Victor said into the walkie-talkie just as he realised that Barret was not on the other end any more. Vicktor messed around with the frequency.

“Uhh Rikku?” Vicktor asked.

“No, it’s me Vamp…. Are you drunk Victor?” Vamp replied.

“Uh no just forgot Rikku’s frequency, uh, could you tell him?”

Vamp sighed. “Fine,” he replied. Vamp poked Walrus and said, “Your brother’s been hitting the bottle.”

“What? Really?” Walrus asked.

“Nah, I’m joking. Of course he is!”

“How in hell does he get this stuff?” Walrus asked himself. Vamp turned the dial and changed the frequency to Rikku’s and hit COM button.

Rikku had short cut, light brown hair, he wore sunglasses, a bandana, and a set of urban camo. His fingers were a shade of grey. About fifty meters away in an old building Rikku was checking the scope on his needle sniper. He heard the walkie-talkie and picked it up, “Yeah?” he said into the mike.

“They’re on their way!” Vamp replied.

Rikku looked out his sniper’s scope and saw the convoy. “How many are there, Vamp?” Rikku asked.

On the over end, Vamp looked out his binoculars. He grabbed the walkie-talkie and said “Four jeeps, each with four soldiers armed with the normal stuff and a motorbike in the middle… Shade’s on it.”

“Jesus!” Rikku replied, “Your info was correct!”

“Always is!” Vamp replied, “But there is only a slim chance that we can beat him. He is one of the best – no, the best assassin of all time.”

“We’ve been paid up front, so we gotta do it!” Rikku then realised maybe it wasn’t the greatest assignment they chose.

“Okay just light the flare when your ready, when I light my flare carry out the plan, okay?"

“You can count on me, Vamp, plus you really didn’t need to tell me I already knew!” But by the time he’d finished, vamp wasn’t on the end any more.

A couple of minutes passed and a thick red smoke came out of the building Rikku was in. Then a blue smoke came from the ruins Vicktor was at. Then it was followed white smoke from the earth coloured netting.

“Hopefully this works…” Vamp muttered. “You ready Walrus?” Vamp asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be!” Walrus joked. Vamp nodded and pulled the cap off the flare, the chemicals lit, sending off black smoke.

“God help us... God help us...” Vamp muttered.
