Introduction In a world where humans, monsters, dragons and fae compete for existence, many great legends rise from the depths of obscurity to change the path of history. This is the story of one such legend, The Dragonai. Skilled warriors wielding powerful weapons and magic from the backs of great dragons, The Dragonai were the bane of warmongers of every species. Had they desired it, they had the power to rule the world.

Setting This is a map of the affected region of Shria.

This is a map of Valden's Lair.
The world is called Shria, ?base? or ?foundation? in an ancient human tongue. The different species of Shria are reproductively isolated. This means that there are no such things as half-elves, half-fae, etc.
Humans are the most combative of the sentient species, having superior battle instincts and resistance to the horrors of killing. Humans have no magic of their own but are usually trained in the use of some weapon.
Elves are the most gentle and peace-loving of the sentient species. They love to live simply, in harmony with the world around them. They do not possess the human race?s battle instincts or resistance to the horrors of killing. Many elves cannot even bring themselves to fight at a distance with the enchanted bows that they can employ to great effect. Elves acknowledge the need for defense, which is why they employ these bows and train in their use. Elves have fairly strong magic but it is purely of an enchantment nature. They can alter the properties of objects but that is all. Elves are physically strong and fair of appearance. Their average height is around six feet and they are usually thinner than humans on average. There are several races of elves with certain physical differences between them, however, there is no friction between elven races.
Fae are creatures who value their privacy as a species, using their powerful illusory magic to conceal their cities and wielding powerful destructive magic to destroy hostile intruders. Fae enjoy making things of delicate beauty, occasionally breaching their isolation to call upon a nearby elf for their enchantment magic. Fae come in a number of shapes and sizes with the smallest races being a matter of inches in height while the largest stand at about five feet. All fae have wings and can change their size at will once they reach a certain level of maturity. They cannot enlarge themselves beyond about five feet in height however.
Dragons are the most powerful of the sentient species of Shria. Their scales are nearly perfect armor and their claws and bladed tails make excellent weapons. The breath of a dragon has an effect that is unique, no two are exactly alike. Once they reach a certain age dragons are capable of altering the shape of their discarded scales as well as being able to grant powerful magic to others. Dragons cannot wield magic of their own. They live alone or with their mate and young dragons leave to find their own lairs shortly after they gain the use of their breath at about two years of age. Dragons are capable of speaking aloud after about a month.
Monsters, or Varile, are a species of deformed creatures. Once natural animals, these poor beasts have been infected with strange and malignant, semi-intelligent, simbiotes that warped their bodies and natures. Although the simbiotes are unable to infest any of the sentient organisms on Shria their twisted bestial hosts cause more than enough problems.

((Yeah, all the people I know are outside the guild and, to be honest, aren't up to the standard this place has. Most of them could do it fairly easily, but they just don't strive for literacy as the people here do. It's kind of sad, really.))

((That is sad. From this point on I would like it very much if ooc conversations were conducted either via PM or tacked onto IC posts.))
A trail of gray dust marks the passage of a small caravan through one of the canyons that lie scattered over the Gray Waste. The routes across this wasteland of gray dust, rock and black dunes are nothing but mapped paths through the canyons that stretch along its full length and breadth. The monsters that dwell in the black sands above these paths never roam the shadowed depths of the canyons but the brigands and other criminals who take refuge in these deep fissures justify the hiring of numerous guards for even the smallest of caravans. This caravan is a small one, only five wagons with four guards each, carrying mostly sturdy cloth and fishing tools for sail in the villages that cling to life on the shores of the Silver Sea.
The guards wear a wide variety of, both complete and incomplete, suits of armor and carry an assortment of different weapons. They chat and joke with each other and the wagon drivers but their eyes continually sweep over the area and their hands never stray far from their weapons. While seemingly at ease, these human warriors are not amateurs. One of the guards rides at a distance, almost two wagon lengths ahead of the lead wagon, and he rides silently. His steed is calm even though he guides it with nudges and touches of his hands instead of the reigns. His complete lack of armor, except for the gloves of black leather and blackened steel bracers, and his youthful appearance seem to indicate inexperience. The way the other guards and the caravan master, riding in the lead wagon, look at him belies this. This caravan has seen battle since the hiring of Zeal to replace a wounded man. In that battle Zeal had put the simple, two edged blade at his hip to deadly use, killing the reckless and ill equipped bandits with a terrible dispatch that has purchased both respect and solitude for him from the others in the caravan.
He raises his head and right hand, signaling the caravan to stop as his dark emerald gaze sweeps the sky. He continues forward a few paces before stopping his horse and dismounting. The small gray rocks and dust that make up the canyon's bleak floor crunch under his boots as he proceeds forward alone, his right hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The other guards remain at their posts beside the stopped wagons, a new tension and cautious silence in the air.
Suddenly the screams of panicking animals fill the air as an imposing shadow passes overhead, sweeping toward the head of the caravan. The guards who are still mounted are either thrown off their beasts or carried back the way they came as the creatures panic. The wagon drivers are forced to cut the tethers that hold the teams to their wagons, letting the beasts flee. The men stand in the dust raised by the flight of their mounts, all but one grasping a weapon in trembling fingers. The one guard who stands undisturbed continues to watch the sky, tense but unafraid. The caravan master shifts his grip on the mace in his hand and stares at Zeal. The unassuming guard hired for the standard sum is slowly drawing his sword.
Zeal's gaze is fixed on the creature whose presence had driven the beasts mad with fright and shaken the hearts of men for generations uncounted. The huge dragon descends slowly, its body as black as the dunes that cover the surface of the Gray Waste. Its eyes and his seem locked together, matching emerald gazes, as the dragon slowly reaches the canyon floor. The fanning of its wings forces a strong wind through the canyon, blasting dust and small stones into the faces of the caravan master and the others who stood with him. The humans break, fleeing in terror back toward the west from which they came. The black dragon's claws touch the ground without great noise and its eyes continue to meet those of a calm human swordsman who stands without fear of death, Zeal.
When the caravan master and his guards return, after gathering their beasts, they find the wagons intact. There are no signs of battle anywhere nor is there any sign of either the dragon or the human guard who had faced it with just a simple blade in hand.
