okay so most of ya should know what open office is since it comes with many distros, but those you who don't it is a free open source office utility, like Microsoft office, and even if you use windows and have Microsoft office, this is still a great program to use. the home page can be found here http://www.openoffice.org

I know OO quite well I had to write howto in my language for Writer razz it was OK but It didnst sink in to my head :S. So I dont know much about it but I like to use it because it is free and it is almost the same as MO. So yea why use MO if you can sue OO and get the same resoult even .doc files if YOU want them so bad razz

The only difference between OO.o and M$ Office is price, you have to pay for M$ Office and OO.o is free and can do anything M$ Office can do.

hmm It can't do everything that M$ does but mostly everything. I know that because we use that at work and people who use M$ and OO they are saying that is missing in OO and so on but OO writer is almost the same as Word so I think that we can say that they are coming to get M$ good soon and calc is almost the same as excel but other OO programs arent as good as M$ YET,

So this is what I gatherd from my work in 8 months razz .

For normal ppl that doesnt use some special M$ stuff I sugeste to use OO.

I have OpenOffice installed, and have had for the past 6 to 8 months (on my current computer, anyway, been installed long before then too on prior desktops).

That being said, I've never really found a use for it.

I (sadly) don't use linux at work any more - when I did, I used Open Office all the time... Now, though, I'm at a bit of a loss. I don't need to open .doc files, I don't trust them nor get any really. I don't need a spreadsheet application, don't have any clue what I'd use one for... I don't need a presenter. I don't need any type of math formula editor. I don't need really anything that OpenOffice does, come to think about it.

I use gedit for editing text files - don't see a reason to put fancy graphics and formatting in my notes.txt... I use Thunderbird for mail (Oh, wait, OO doesn't come with a mail client, but MS Office does...)...

While I admit it's a great product, and I fully support the project, I do see less of a use for it for home users than businesses. Good suggestion, though, but does everybody really need a full blown office suite at home?

I find OpenOffice essential - v2.0 is everything I need. One thing, though - it's a bit slow in opening. If I have to fire up a very quick spreadsheet, I may go with Gnumeric.

Interestingly, I once put in a case for OpenOffice at work - although we already had MS Office.
Why?
Because I had to put a bunch of documents onto a work-website regularly. My predecessors had simply uploaded the .doc files - huge, clunky, required the right version of MS Office (or OpenOffice) and those who downloaded them could edit them before printing. Not good.
I used OpenOffice to simply open the files and export them as pdf. Fraction of the size, non-editable and damn near anyone on the web could read them.

Anyway, OpenOffice, like Firefox, is a brilliant "migration-easing" app. People who get used to them on Windows will find moving to Linux easier.
Browsing the web and using Office apps - more than 60% of most home use other than games.

It must depend on your processor when I use Open Office it takes aboout 5 seconds to load (if you use Gnome there is a quickstarter for the panel)

Load time is about 3 seconds for me, I have a quick load icon on my desktop and in my menu also (using KDE)

Why would someone possibly want to use Microsoft Office, when you could get it for free?
PostPosted: Tue May 29, 2007 12:10 pm

Yea Gnomesquid you are right, but you should know that a lot of ppl dont know about OO or they think it sucks because it is free that is just what some ppl think.

Give open office five days and you will be use to it as well, its one of those things that you catch onto because everything is in the same place that in is in word.

I prefer Open Office to anything from Microsoft... so I use it on both Linux and Windows.
