1.) Whats a good way to keep a horse from getting sand colic?

** I have a male gelding and hes on a bare ground pen. I feed him Stratergy horse pellets and plenty of hay. Im working on putting up a fence around the grass pastures, but its going to take a while. I have put a cup of oil and mixed it in his feed. [ to get the sand out of his stomach, if he has any.] [ I dont know how often I should do this, or if its healthy...a friend of mine told me thats what I need to do...Advice please?]

2.) My horse used to be in the pen with other horses, but the horses moved. He doesnt seem depressed. Hes eating and drinking fine..I just feel bad. I also tried putting in a Jolly ball in the pen so he could play with it..[is this a good idea?]

3.) *** I have a sulfer/mineral block for my horse, but should i also by a salt block..because my horse licks my palm [which hes doing for the body salt, i think...] So should i get a salt block, even though I have a block that contains everything?

4.) What wormers do you reccomend? I currently am switching inbetween Safeguard and Zimetrin, everytime i worm him.

1) Keeping your horse from getting sand colic or any other type of colic is as simple as not feeding when they are wet, not putting them away wet and just plain taking cre of your horse. There are other things you can do, like make sure that there isn't too much frit and large chunks in the dirt of his pen. Giving him oil in his food is a good thing I use canola oil every day, but some people swear by olive oil.

2) You horse might be a little bit lonely. You might want to think of getting him a "goat". That doesn't mean that you have to get an actual goat, you could get a llama or an alpaca or a donkey or a mule or a horse or anything. Horses just naturally are used to herd procedure. They like having another animal with them. Heck you could get him a dog!

3)Yes, you might want to consider getting a salt lick. They are really good. Espcially if you are having your hand attacked by his tounge.

4) I use Safeguard. That's just me though. Some are more of a hassle than others. It all depends on what works best for you and your horse. Also, it depends upon what you feed him and where you get it from.

Please note that these are just some recomendations from me...you don't have to take my advice but one thing that I DO advise, talk to your vet. Your vet should know the most.

I see Devils and I'm glad you worm the horses.

Star, I also thought horses that are lonely can have llamas with them? I never knew that and what does safeguard look like?
