A much younger Ren sat perched upon a bench in the park, a large, colorful lollipop practically glues to her small, pink tongue. The girl's dark blue, almost black hair brushed her shoulders, bangs forming a frame about her face. Her bright turquoise eyes glued upon the large circular, sugary rainbow before her. Her furry kitten ears were perked, swiveling this way and that, three earrings dangling from each. On one side a heart charm, the other a star.
Ren's little tail peeked out from just above the waist of her pleated skirt, an elaborately decorated pair of purple rain boots adorning her small feet. Even for a twelve year old, Ren was tiny.

Summer. The worst possible time to move. The time when you could spend as much time as you wanted with your friends. Yuuta couldn't do that though. Not anymore due to the fact that his friends now lived at least four hours away. Yuuta sighed and kicked at the soccer ball he had brought with him, shaking his head, silver hair sticking to his damp forhead.
It was hot out. Almost to the point of sweltering and fair, sun kissed shoulders were exposed to the sun light, one of the tank top straps slipping off of his shoulder. The park was in sight now and this earned the ball an extra hard kick, sending it bounding into the park. Cursing, Yuuta ran after it, sneakers thudding on the concrete path, iridescent eyes watching as the ball bounced... straight to the feet of a young girl. Yuuta stopped.
"Er... Could you pass me my ball?" He tucked a hand into the pocket of his shorts and cocked his head, silky white ears perking hopefully. It was his favorite ball and he wasn't about to lose it to some little grade schooler.

Grade schooler? P-SHAW! Ren was a happy middle schooler, and she was great at flaunting that fact. Ren glanced up with bright eyes, the odd symbol on her hip had begun to tingle, and she reached down, lifting the hem of her purple tank-top to rub the skin. She hated that thing... it was such an odd hassle to hide. "Sure..." Ren mumbled softly, reaching over to throw her lolly away (She had plenty more in her pockets), before bending to retrieve his ball.
She stood up, barely coming to the boy's shoulder, offering him the ball. Her nails were painted the same purple as her boots and shirt, with little butterflies drawn in the paint. It was rather pretty... "If I can play with you too..." She smiled, cocking her head to the side slightly. Ren was not a very picky child, and this boy seemed like he needed a friend anyway... maybe he was just like her... Maybe he wanted a friend too. Oddly enough, the small girl seemed drawn to him. Her long tail flicked back and forth, the bell that was tied about it jingling a merry little tune as it went.

Kaida. The girl reminded him so much of Kaida that Yuuta actually had to take a step back, his hand flying to clutch at his chest while the word on his hip began to itch furiously. The word. Tempest. It had appeared on his hip the night after Kaida's death. However, these were not thoughts Yuuta wanted to have and he shook his head and strode over, snatching the ball from the younger girl.
"No wa-" Yuuta stopped, his eyes falling on the painted nails then on to the exposed skin that had appeared when the girl had lifted her arms, her shirt riding up slightly. His jaw almost dropped and his hands let go of the ball, letting it bounce on the ground. There, one this young girl's hip, was one word: Tempest. Yuuta's face went unreadable and he licked his lips, his mouth suddenly feeling very dry before he jabbed a finger at the mark.
"Where did you get that?!" Yuuta bit his lower lip. It wasn't like anyone knew about it. He bent down and grabbed his ball from the dirt, looked around then finally straightened up. If no one knew about the mark, least of all people here, then how could she have known? A word she had fancied? Possibly. But there were a lot of places to put it, so why her hip? Besides, the word on his own hip had stopped tingling. Yuuta adopted a resigned look and ducked his head. This girl must be something special. Kaida had always told him not to ignore something odd, especially if the signs were blatant and, now, he wasn't going to let this girl go. Either way, his uncle told him he should find a friend.
"...Fine. You can play. I'm Yuuta."

Ren's small hands jerked to her hip, tugging her shirt down quickly, as if that would make the mark go away. She looked down, biting her lip, her fingers tracing over where the mark was, through her shirt. She had memorized it. "I dunno..." Ren's voice was soft, and she seemed to have retreated to being shy. "It came when mommy died..." She murmured, closing her eyes tightly a moment, reaching up to rub at them. She really did look like a small child. Oddly fragile...
She peeked up with her bright turquoise eyes, a sad smile playing on her lips. "I'm Ren... Ren Chiharu." Ren held out a small hand towards the boy, looking back up at him, trying to look strong. She had pushed all those emotions back for a reason. She wasn't going to break now. Ren took a deep breath, steadying herself, quickly pushing the rest of the emotions back as well. She promised Onii-san she would stay strong.
The small girl had barely noticed the mark had stopped all of it's odd sensations, a cool chill running down her spine instead. It was soothing.

Yuuta frowned, watching the girl. The word had just appeared for her too? Hesitantly, the young boy lifted his shirt to reveal the word that was scrawled on his own hip, mirroring the young girl's. A shudder ran through his body and Yuuta felt a smile appear on his lips for the first time in a year, dropping his shirt and taking the girl's hand, shaking it gently.
"So whatcha wanna play then?" Yuuta cocked his head and bounced the ball then caught it and tossed it to Ren playfully, his smile turning into a full out grin. For once, his thoughts weren't plagued by the guilt he felt over Kaida. Laughing softly, Yuuta reached out and ruffled Ren's hair, clucking softly under his breath. There was a connection here and it was an odd one though not completely unwelcome. They both needed a friend. They both needed each other. At least... that's what Yuuta thought.
"Wanna go play on the slides? We can play pirates but I'm captain." Gentle blue eyes gave Ren a thorough examination and Yuuta nodded promptly, teasingly. "You can be the cabin boy." The lowest rank on a ship. Would she actually go for that?

Ren peered forward, looking at his mark. "You have one too..." She whispered, a smile growing as she looked back up at Yuuta. "I think I like you." The small girl gave a nod of approval, giggling quietly as she shook his hand, watching as he bounced the ball. Ren quickly threw her hands up, catching the ball and hugging it.
Ren squeaked as her hair was ruffled, she dropped the ball and reached up, waving his hand away, her ears pressing down into her hair. She looked back up when he was done, trying hard to run her fingers through her hair, making sure it wasn't as messy as Yuuta had left it.
Ren blinked, before shaking her head. "I'm no cabin boy!" She squeaked in protest, grinning slightly, standing straighter, trying to look taller. "I'm in seventh grade... I'm big...!" She protested quietly, grinning still.

Amusement flickered through Yuuta's eyes and he chuckled, standing straighter and then pushing himself onto his tip toes. He was s till almost a foot taller then the younger girl. This was understandable though as Yuuta was older and his gender was generally bigger.
"I'm still taller but alright..." Yuuta finally conceded and tapped his chin, trying to figure out what to nominate Ren. She obviously didn't want cabin boy and though telling her that she could be 'cabin man' would be funny, he doubted she would go for that either.
"Alright, you can be first mate." Yuuta tossed his head, ridding his eyes of the hair that fell in them then he leaped onto the bench that Ren had been occupying before she caught his ball. "I will be Captain Yuuta Shimizu." With that said, he bent down and winked at Ren, sticking his tongue out.
"And there ain't nothin' you can do about it!" Yuuta laughed, still teasing Ren then jumped down from his perch and skedaddled across the park towards the play structure, A.K.A his ship. He liked this girl. She wasn't like all the other ones. She had spunk and she knew how to stand up for herself. Yuuta glanced over his shoulder. Besides... She was kinda cute... for a seventh grader. Then of course, there was the subkect of the connection they obviously shared through the word on the hips. Odd.

Ren made a face. She hated being short. "You watch me Cap'n! Ever heard of mutiny?" For a seventh grader... Ren had quite the vocabulary. It was as if she had spent her time reading a dictionary... knowing the girl's odd quirks, that wasn't completely impossible.
The small girl bent down, plucking up the ball Yuuta had left, before racing after him. She was a bit slower, she was wearing a skirt and rain boots after all. Ren had a rather large grin on her face as she reached the jungle-gym, taking the ball in one hand and reaching up for a bar with the other. She was testing gravity at this point, trying to hold onto two things that were tugging in different directions. Ren looked down with large, bright eyes, shaking her head, sending her hair flying about, before concentrating again on her foot and getting it to lift to one of the steps.
"I can do it..." She mumbled quietly, brows coming together as she pulled herself up onto the play set, smiling at her accomplishment. Ren pushed herself to stand again, still holding the ball, scanning the grounds for Yuuta. "Cap'n?" She called, smiling. She hadn't had a playmate in the longest time... it was nice to just be a kid again. All worries were being pushed aside for the moment... she could just fool around and be happy for now.
