All elves as a race I don't care what type of elves are put up on this high horse a pedestal and I for one would like to drop kick them off it. I read the Last Mythal Anthology Realms of the Elves a while back and that entire book was depressing. Realms aren't any better then any of the other races there are just some special things about them that some of them pick up because of there racial longevity. I mean of course they look noble and honorable and wise and enlightened next to humans who doesn't humans as a whole are the biggest failures at being a decent race more so then any other in the history of faerun and real life.

Elves are elves simple as that but the still suffer from interracial racism Drow versus every one Gold elves versus moon elves and so on and so forth. I'm not saying there not special and that the do not have wonderful qualities I'm just saying any one looks good compared to humans. And elves suffer from a lot of the same faults as humans just not as badly and usaly on a more rational scale. I guess the point I'm making is being pretty and living a long time doesn't make you special. And people shouldn't like them just because of that because you can live to a hundred be more beautiful then any one in the world and still be a b*****d inside, and it's whats inside that counts. Judge by the individual not the race.

Well every one except for humans they are just natrualy born bastards. XD

Humans are not so bad.

Characters in any book series are going to use some kind of archetype.
For example, there will always be present a surly dwarf.

Elves are held in high regard because of their natural grace and dexterity,
so it's only natural that the fictional characters we read about play on those attributes.

Also, I would assume that with age comes wisdom...
However, in the case of the humans, their shorter life span seems to motivate them even more.
I believe that in one of Drizzt's monologues,
he mentioned that human wizards are far more dedicated to their craft than any other race,
solely because they have less time to master their skills.
I think the example he pointed out was that an elf wizard, who has centuries to attain perfection,
will not work as hard to obtain that perfection as will a human, who has less than a century.

except that...it does. being pretty in our world gets you rich as hell. Even if stars are bastards inside, they're still special to some people. Everyone want to know what they're wearing, what their hair looks like, who they divorced, ect.

it's not jst because elves are 'prettier and more gracefull' that they're always put on a high horse
elves are usually thought of haveing a supernatual aspect to them because of their close assoseation with magic and mystical forces

Good point. In most stories, elves are also usually quite mysterious, hiding up in their cities, so when people see a real one they are mystified. This doesn't happen so much in Forgotten Realms, but in Lord of the Rings and Eragon, it's true.

even in Forgotten Realms it's still kinda the case, think of Evermeet
though more integrative then most fantasy settings, the racial gaps are still evident

Maybe everybody just obsesses over the elves because they're not one. If being a human is boring simply because we are human, not being human would automatically make you special.

On the note of long life spans, don't even halflings and gnomes average well over a century?

On a silly note, everybody loves elves because, let's face it: Pointed ears are cool! biggrin

But can't that be said for all the other races too?

It's the traits that elves have, though, that make us want to be them. I wouldn't mind being very graceful, good at everything, and immortal. But not all the races have so much good stuff about them. I don't want to be short, like a gnome, halfling, or dwarf. Dwarves are also gruff and stubborn, which can be good traits, but not ones that I value.

theres also the fact that of all the other non-human races, elves are most simuler to humans
particually as far as apearences are concern
in fact, with the gracefulness and unearthly beauty, it might be said that elves are nothing but personifications of human profection to a certain degree <.<

Very true. They're like an embodiement of perfection. This is more in Eragon and LOTR than in Faerun, as Elves don't exist among other races enough to be corrupted, but it still happens.
