Epica was started by Mark Jansen (ex After Forever) and he found Simone Simons as his singer and they started Epica. In my experiance with the band i get one impression: Typical symp goth metal with operatic vocals, nothing too out of the ordinary. But i have heard that their last album or one coming up (i can't recall) is heavily influenced by the Mayan culture which i found highly interesting.

I love Epica, Simone is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. They started under the name of 'Sahara Dust' and changed their name by 2003. Their name was inspired by one of Kamelot's album. The album you're talking about, the one that's influenced by mayan culture, is "Consign to Oblivion", released on april 2005, being the second album.

They are the one band in gothic metal that drive me insane. Simone has an excellent voice, but the music is.... horrid.

I thought i was alone on this. Seriously we have almost the same taste when it comes to goth.

I think the music is not horrid, though, I think they could be better. What I think is excellent is the melodies they apply in their ballads, in example: Solitary Ground and Feint.

Yes, the only problem I have so much is that the symphonics over drive it completely. It also sounds too much like Power Metal in my opinion.

good opinion. The only thing that makes them not metal is the lack of guitar solos.

Yeah. However, some bands choose not to use solos, as it looks to gimmycky. Unearth for example (I hate reffering to a metalcore band, but...) and only use them about once or twice every album.

Simone's voice needs a lot more training in my opinion. She tends to slip into pop-diva-mode once in a while. That irritates me more than anything.

I love them, but the only thing that I think lets them down is the lack of guitars in all/most of their songs sad

They're still good though mrgreen
