The Mortal

Full Name - Persephone Floros
Aliases - Proserpina, Kore, Persy, The Green Lady, "OGAWDRUNAWAAY!"
Gender - Female
Age - Appears to be in her early twenties
Birthday - Birthday unknown
Height - 5' 1''
Weight - Wouldn't you like to know?
Realm - Goddess of Fertility and Seasons, Queen of the Underworld

Appearance - Many were used to the short, brown-haired woman with a flower in her hair and strange green tattoos, but her current appearance is new and rather surprising to the neighborhood. Long waves of green dotted with flowers? How did she pull that one off?

Disposition - Persy has a reputation for being short-tempered and defensive of her store, and the children all fear to play soccer near her store in case they lose yet another ball. And yet, in the past few weeks, she's seemed positively glowing. Does this have something to do with the new helping hand? He is rather handsome...

History - Seasons cropped up in the middle of the Grecian neighborhood in Middling about ten years ago, an oddity among others, as most of the people in Middling couldn't afford flowers, much less the equipment it took to maintain them in such hard times. And yet, the flowers under Persy's strict hand flourished, even after they'd left her care, and some people called it magic. It was becoming less of a rarity to see a potted plant decorating someone's front porch, or a bouquet accenting a cafe table. It would seem that Seasons had brought plant-life back to the middle class of the City.

Not long afterwards, Des Thanos moved into an apartment, again an oddity, as no one had much of a reason to move unless they were from Downers and had managed to get their hands on some money, likely in some illegal fashion. But the man didn't appear to be any sort of drug dealer, and he spent day after day trying to woo the elusive Persy Floros, though time after time he failed, withered flowers in hand. The townspeople found it amusing, and though she denied him many times, old crones with nothing to do would bet on how long it would be before he was in bed with her.

However, when Des's lack of involvement with Downers had finally been accepted, strange children came to Middling, looking for Seasons. It started with a scaly boy with straw-colored hair, but others came, and ominous men in suits followed behind, an investigation surely under way in a manner far above what the neighbors understood. Still, they gossiped, but now it was behind closed doors and in hushed whispers.

And then the world split open, and monsters were in the City. Persy remained at Seasons, despite the three-headed beast that guarded the crevice in front of it, but one day, she was gone. Not even the lanky girl who had been seen helping out from time to time had stayed behind, and for a time, people thought that the owner of Seasons was gone, along with the flowers and the peace of the neighborhood, with ghosts floating around everywhere.

But seasons change, and come springtime, the ground healed, the strange apparitions disappeared, and Persy came back to Seasons, her hair a vibrant green and Des Thanos at her side. Wagers were paid off, and the exchanged whispers became excited with scandalous talk. The flowy dress she wore...could it be maternity wear?

The Goddess

(From Wikipedia)

In Greek mythology, Persephone (Kore or Cora) was the embodiment of the Earth's fertility at the same time that she was the Queen of the Underworld, the korē (or young maiden), and the parthenogenic daughter of Demeter—and, in later Classical myths, a daughter of Demeter and Zeus. In the Olympian version she also becomes the consort of Hades when he becomes the deity that governs the underworld.

In a Classical period text ascribed to Empedocles, describing a correspondence between four deities and the classical elements, the name Nestis for water apparently refers to Persephone. "Now hear the fourfold roots of everything: enlivening Hera, Hades, shining Zeus. And Nestis, moistening mortal springs with tears".

Of the four deities of Empedocles's elements, it is the name of Persephone alone that is taboo— Nestis is a euphemistic cult title— for the Greeks knew another face of Persephone as well. She was also the terrible [Queen of the Dead], whose name was not safe to speak aloud, who was euphemistically named, simply as, Kore, "The Maiden", a vestige of her archaic role as the deity ruling the underworld.

There is an archaic role for Persephone as the dread queen of the Underworld, whose very name it was forbidden to speak. In the Odyssey, commonly dated circa 800 to 600 BC, when Odysseus goes to the Underworld, he refers to her as the Iron Queen. Her central myth, for all its emotional familiarity, also was the tacit context of the secret initiatory mystery rites of regeneration at Eleusis, which promised immortality to their awe-struck participants—an immortality in her world beneath the soil, feasting with the heroes who dined beneath her dread gaze.

Unlike every other offspring of an Olympian pairing of deities, Persephone has no stable position at Olympus. Persephone used to live far away from the other deities, a goddess within Nature herself before the days of planting seeds and nurturing plants. In the Olympian telling, the gods Hermes, Ares, Apollo, and Hephaestus, had all wooed Persephone, but Demeter rejected all their gifts and hid her daughter away from the company of the Olympian deities. Thus, Persephone lived a peaceful life before she became the goddess of the underworld, which, according to Olympian mythographers, did not occur until Hades abducted her and brought her into the underworld. She was innocently picking flowers with some nymphs—, Athena, and Artemis, the Homeric hymn says—, or Leucippe, or Oceanids— in a field in Enna when Hades came to abduct her, bursting through a cleft in the earth; the nymphs were changed by Demeter into the Sirens for not having interfered. Life came to a standstill as the devastated Demeter, goddess of the Earth, searched everywhere for her lost daughter. Helios, the sun, who sees everything, eventually told Demeter what had happened.

Finally, Zeus, pressured by the cries of the hungry people and by the other deities who also heard their anguish, could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone. But before she was released to Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, Hades tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds, (seven, eight, or perhaps three according to the telling) which forced her to return to the underworld for a season each year. In some versions, Ascalaphus informed the other deities that Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds. When Demeter and her daughter were united, the Earth flourished with vegetation and color, but for four months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm. This is an origin story to explain the seasons.

In some versions, Demeter forbids the earth to produce, in others she is so busy looking for Persephone that she neglects the earth, or her duties as the Earth which she represents, and in some the depth of her despair causes nothing to grow.

The Flower Shop

Seasons hadn't always been around, but people acted as if the little corner-store had been there forever, a testament to "the good old days", even though no one knew what those were. Simple in design and a mixture of wood and a beige stucco, the building on its own would have appeared worn-down and anachronistic in comparison to the concrete jungle around it. However, people usually paid little attention to the store itself, because clinging to its walls and sprouting in the yard were hundreds of plants of all varieties, colors, and purposes. As it would happen, a fruit tree's branches extended out towards the sidewalk, but no one ever dared pick the fruit dangling out invitingly. Little Marquez tried a few years back, and he's never been heard from since.

A pathway of stones dot the fertile groundsoil (again a commodity, as almost all of the City is entirely paved over) up to the front window, which has only a modest nameplate and a few plants on display, the prices of which are unlisted. The door is split in two, the top half almost always open and the lower half closed, and unlocked to maintain some sort of barrier. It's little surprise that the relatively small interior is filled with plants, on shelves, in pots, and some even growing from the walls. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to how the plants are organized, but organized they are, not a speck of dirt out of place or on the hardwood floor.

Other than plants, there isn't much in the way of furniture, but opposite the door is a wooden counter, usually featuring some exotic plant on one side and holding the old, unused cash register on the other. The counter lies a step above the normal flooring, and behind it is a door, always locked. Sometimes Persy comes from within the door, but no one is entirely sure what lies inside.

The Back Room

(Under Heavy Construction)

What you don't see every day is what's hidden behind that secret door, but were you to enter, you'd find...more plants. In fact, it just seems to be a bit colder to house some of the shrubberies from the more milder climates, until you notice that there is a door in the back of this room as well.

Upon opening it, you find there is a small room, not furnished in any way except for a simple wooden table that actually appears to be growing from the floor and a cork board upon the wall, covered in pins. On the table, there are various notebooks, filled with both blank pages and information. The cork board is actually a map of the city, and if you look closely, you'll notice that none of the pins are actually stuck to the map: they levitate millimeters from the actual cork, each one tracing the moves of a Godling. It is here where Persy houses all of her secret information, as well as where she has any of her conversations with actual Gods.

The Others

Anubis - A friend of the family, we go way back. I don't envy his job. He had to take Abbot...

Des - Former husband, now a friend. Awkward, but in a cute way, definitely not the Hades I remember...Wait, did I just call him cute?

Fish - Poseidon's prophet. "A Greek Hero Thing"? I'm honestly not surprised. I still miss the kid from time to time.

Writ - Coyote's prophet, and a little punk, if you ask me. He needs to learn to respect plantlife!

Len - Cthulhu's prophet. Haven't seen him in months. Why am I so relieved about that?

Crow - Morrigan's prophet, and out of the picture. Good. She was a little whore anyway.

Seth - Hypnos's prophet. He looks like he's on drugs or something.

Jubs - Hermes's prophet. Scrawny little runt, I wonder what he would do if he heard about how far his god and I go back?

Kayla - Loki's kid. When did Loki show up, anyway?

Vlad - Fenrir's prophet. The Blacksuits took him, but I don't exactly see why. He looks like he could be in cohorts with Writ.

Vale - Tezcatlipoca's prophet. His god creeps me out. Do we have another Len on our hands?

Shiri - Eros's prophet. I must be seeing things. That can't be who I think it is...

Koa - Kamapua'a's kid. A pig-nosed brat, but I think I taught him how to respect his elders.

Keeya - Don't know much about her. I need to get more information.

Sarah - Bast's kid.

Svana - Verthandi's kid.

Zyanya - Chalchiuhtlicue's kid. Mouthful of a name for a goddess, but I like the girl's spunk.

Rafael - Tlaloc's kid. Anubis introduced him, so I don't know him, but he's related to Zyanya.

Keahi - Hono'aumakua's kid. I don't know why a god would pick someone who appears so out of shape to represent him, but he seemed like a good kid.
