The First One

The Dead of the Night

By: Nicole aka Fallie

The night was creeping up on the town, the wind whipping against the windows of the poorly constructed houses. A full moon was out tonight, gleaming through the darken sky, like a flashlight in a dark room. A lonely widow glided through the rundown paths, a black shawl covering her head. It was the night of Halloween; all the children were collecting their stash of treats. But tonight, she was going to her husband’s grave again.
9 years ago from this day, she had denounced her love for him. In her hand she carried a lamp, her eyes flickered like the candle inside of it. She could have gone without her lamp; she was a witch after all. Slowly she made her way to his grave, tonight was one of the most powerful days for witches. She knelt down in front of it, removing her black shawl. She loosely tied it around the tombstone and then after a few seconds would remove it and be on her way. Every Halloween for the next 50 years, she did the same thing. Never once did she hand out candy to the kids, or pay head to the stories brought about by Halloween.
On her last Halloween she walked through the rain to the cemetery, when she reached the gate, something caught her eye, something close to her husband’s grave. Still she continued through the muddy puddles to his tombstone. There she saw an old man, her husband. Her eyes connected with his and she just stared for a moment unable to comprehend.

“Maggie…” he began.

“I buried you 59 years ago.” Tears began to run amuck down her checks. “I buried you. And you have come back so I can finish you. Couldn’t take the pain anymore. I wish I could have killed you then, but now is better then never. See, I already have your grave prepared for you.” She showed him his tombstone.

“No Maggie, you buried your feelings for me, but I will always be here. No matter what pain you brought to me, no pain is greater then knowing you left me.” He lifted his hand and tried to wipe the tears from her eyes. She looked upon his neck and saw choking marks, marks she had place there. Slowly she pulled off her midnight cloak, and laid it aside for she had a deed to do.

“I’m not going to save you this time” Slowly she pulled of her black shawl and tied it tightly around the tombstone. She watched as he grasped at his throat, struggling against it. With a thud he fell to the ground after that she proceeded to untie the shawl. She leaned down and kissed his tombstone. Slowly she walked ready to leave this all behind. Something however caught her eye. She stopped by the tombstone next to his. Looking closer she noticed a heart drawn on the tombstone, through it was knife. She read the name on that tombstone over and over again in her head, “Maggie Castel, RIP”

“Curse you Montage! My husband has gotten the best of me.” He had beaten her to it, and in coming here sealed both their fates. The words were etched into her mind, as she fell to the ground, dead.

“You can sleep when you’re dead.”

Nicole aka Fallie

The street was dim, but still, I ventured down it. I watched as the last remaining streetlight flickered until darkness consumed the alley. Finally, I stopped near the trashcans that cluttered this little corner of hell. I stood there waiting, staring at my watch and occasionally pacing. When you had a job like mine, you had no time to waste, whether it was eating, sleeping or smiling. In my back pocket, was my switchblade, every few seconds I would check back to make sure it was there.

At last all my waiting was worth it, coming towards me in a black over coat was my prey. I concealed myself in the hidden shadows before he his vision had caught a glimpse of my red coat. I quickly reached into my bad pocket, flipping open my blade once it was away from my body. I saw his head turn around. Silently I cursed to myself, being loud was one of my bad habits.

I heard a click, and suddenly I felt a presence behind me. I was too focused on the other man and so unaware of everything else around me. “Stay silent,” the voice whispered to my ear, in a lover’s voice. I did not reply, for the first time, I was the victim. Instead, I watched hopelessly as the man came towards the end of the alley, where I, I mean we were.

A shoot was heard, and my first reaction was to duck. I realized, I was alive, but the man, the one in the black coat was not as lucky. I watched as the blood flowed from his wound. I could not watch it anymore; I turned around to the man who was behind me.

He had a strange look on his face. “Sleep my dear, you need rest.” I screamed out in horror realizing it was my boss. I watched as the trigger snapped, and the bullet soared out of the barrel, zooming towards me.

Both stories are very messy. Instead of taking the time to build good characters and an interesting story, you rush through the telling. Slow down the pace, you might have everything working in your head, but the readers will not understand the vagueness of it all. Keep working at it! smile

lol. They were assignments for my creative writing class and they were only allowed to be two pages type. It seems wise that I should go back and edit them... smile

Two pages? Wow, that's tough. I think that if I was limited to two pages, they would be all black from using such a small font to fit everything.
