I have a theory: Since you can only lightning bend when calm, an impossible thing for most fire benders, I think you turn off your emotions. Obviously that's easy for Azula, but Iroh....I think he became colder to the world after Lu Ten died. That would explain to why Zuko can't lightning bend; he's too much of an emotional hot head.

That's for sure! I mean, being banished, and treated very poorly by his father and sister. Not to mention loosing him mother. Zuko has more then his fair share of issues that keep him imbalanced.
I think the biggest thing is that he's compassionate. You can see that quality in him during the flash back that tells us about his past. He's trying to be more like his father, and Azula, but it goes against his nature to be that cruel. That's why he has such bad luck, and why he can't deal with his inner turmoil.
Zuzu needs a hug big time. crying
