It has been long known that cats were special
creatures. Why, in Ancient Egypt,
they were worshipped! But I hadnt believed them to have supernatural abilities. Never before had I believed in the supernatural at all. However, after I moved into the abandoned
Haunted House on Taylor Street, I started thinking that there could be a possibility.

The house was beautiful: two floors, walls of oak, good foundation. It came already furnished with the belongings of a young woman who up and disappeared one day. Rumors went around that she had left, spontaneously, with a lover, and merely left her things behind. She would come back for them later. Neighbors had expected her to return, but the months ticked away, and after a year, the house was finally put up for sale.

And, for some reason, no one would buy it. Well, I wasnt from that town. I came from a city fifty miles away, and so I hadnt heard the ghost stories. The tales of the previous owner running off with a mysterious man changed, saying that a Spirit kidnapped her ate her.

Every story was different. So I, never hearing a word of any of this, blindly bought the house, seeing only the beauty of it, and its ridiculously low price, and felt incredibly pleased with myself. The next day, I moved in along with my darling calico companion, Jo.

The very first night as I lay in bed to sleep, Jo curled against the footboard, staring at the far left corner of the room, and yowled like he had lost his mind. He was usually such a quiet thing. What had come over him? There was nothing in that corner though, undeniably, a strange prickling sensation crept across my flesh. I felt as if I was being watched.

For the first few days I paid this no mind, going about my business as normally as possible but every night was the same. Jo would meow like mad, and an unsettling feeling would wash over me. I shiver at the thought. By the end of the first week, I grew increasingly alarmed. Jo was becoming more and more
distressed, now hissing at the invisible presence, his fur standing on end.

I had read, when I was younger, that cats had the uncanny ability to see the unseen. Could Jo see something I couldnt? Terrified out of my wits, I picked up my dear cat, whose claws were fully extended, and raced for the door.

It was locked. I could feel that- that thing getting closer. I could hear its footsteps. Each step it took echoed around my room in a way that paralyzed me with fright. I was absolutely unable to move. When I thought the end was near, just as I was about to lose hope, Jo leapt from my arms and dove towards the presence. Then, before my very eyes, he vanished.

It has been three months since the disappearance of my feline companion. The eerie specter, phantom, or whatever it was, had disappeared as well. I lived in that once haunted house in peace. I no longer feel as if I am being watched at night but oh, how I miss the company of my cat!

Though; sometimes, before I go to bed, I can still hear Jo's soft purrs lulling me to sleep.
