i'm gonna go with kahaitsuo-san on this one. VIII. kicks. butt. period.

VIII contained the perfect essence of the final fantasy formula: story-focused + massive customization + real (not steriotypical) characters = complete awesomeness. the junction system was pure genieous. sqall was magnificent. the final boss was (and is) a royal pain in the butt. not to mention containing one of the craziest limit breaks ever. lionheart puts cloud to shame.

i also like VII and XII.

VII was notable due to three reasons:

1) it was the first fully 3D final fantasy , if not RPG (i'm pretty sure about this, correct me if i'm wrong)
2) it featured a furturistic environment that was'nt out to be JUST futuristic. it maintained its "final fantasy" ness without being pure fantasy
3) sephiroth. 'nuff said.

XII was the breath of fresh air that the series needed after the atrocity that was XI. athough, to be fair, square-Enix did put what they learned from XI into XII. it was more of a free-flowing game than any previous, minus (you guessed it) XI.

however, XII is seriously flawed, in that it took a radical departure from being focused on the story to being focused on the gameplay. so while the gameplay was mind-blowing, the story, frankly, sucked. still, it was a good game. it was'nt like the others in the series, where at the end of the game, u end up saving the world. u just prevent some dude from destroying a city. or a kingdom. or some such non-planetary body. also, the judges are widely considered to be some of the coolest looking bad guys of the modern gaming era. and their not just there for show. u don't get to be the front line comanders of an empire by being pushovers.

yeah, sorry about that. i could go on and on about video games. i am what most people would call a "hardcore" gamer. i guess maybe i am; i do own over 50 PS2 games.

Yeah. You are Tanima-san.

And if you consider the Kingdom Hearts series as a Final Fantasy game too solid-san then I'll add that to my favorites too. KHII was awesome!

no. while kingdom hearts does have a large number of final fantasy characters, it is kingdom hearts, not final fantasy. whole 'nother series.

that being said, kingdom hearts kicks major butt. it goes without saying that leon is my favorite final fantasy character. fav non FF is riku.

It's easier for me if I break a person's name down sometimes when I use Japanese honorifics. That's all.
