"Lifting the Hem of Her Azure Dress...

Hey guys. XD I know some of you are from dearly beloved Canada, so I know ytou know all about our WONDERFUL health care system. sweatdrop So I be askin' for your help. heart

SO, I was reading a little biography-booky thing, "Normal" by Amy Bloom. It was intrsting and informative, and talked mainly about guys like us, Females to Male, acknowledging the fact that it seems like there aren't many of us out there.

People used to believe that for every 4 MtF, there was 1 FtM, but it's now estimated to be about 1:1..And I believe it said 1 in every...20,000, or 200,000 or something like that was transsexual.

Anyway, the book said some stuff, some of it confused me, and some of it I found hurting me, so I won't talk about that.

But ther first person talked about in this book, a Lyle someone, was found to be trans when he was 14, and started getting T at 14, and top surgery at 15, then bottom surgery at like... 20 something. His parents had to pay for all of it, because they lived in the US and it was simply considered "Cosmetic" surgery, so it couldn't be insured. He was 28 when he was interviewed by this woman, and still living in a trailer is a trailer park because his family used so much money...I didn't realize it was so expensive.

Anyway, does the same thing apply here, in Canada, that we aren't insured or covered for it? And, if it doesn't, if I went to the US to get surgery done, would I still be covered?

Well, I know in the US at least, almost no insurance companies will cover transition surgeries or hormones (at least, done honestly)...although San Francisco, for example, has a thing where they'll pay a good deal of the surgery costs for folks who work in the city (it was somewhere between 30-50% I believe).

Now, some doctors can use a little deceit to get stuff insured, like saying you have a hormonal imbalance where you're producing way too much estrogen and progesterone in order to trick the insurance companies into covering hormones, or indicating the presence of cancerous cells in the tits, overies, etc. (via an intentionally misread biopsy) in order to get different kinds of -ectomy surgeries covered (or if you actually have the cancerous cells, in which case it's kind of a win-win if removing the stuff will halt the cancer and continue your transition without deceit). Adding things on (via phalloplasty, metoidioplasty or scrotoplasty) can't be covered even with tricky doctors (except, again, for San Francisco). I've heard some other insurers are thinking of covering transitions, but it can take years before we see that kind of thing take effect or how much the co-pays would be (a company might decide to only cover like 5-10%, for example, which is nice but barely scratches the surface of the costs).

Again, that's just as far as the US goes. I can't really speak surely for Canada. I would think that it would be covered though, at least somewhat, and the estimates for surgery costs seem to be lower.

Really? O-O I'd like to get me one o' those "Intentionally Misread" things. XD Maybe...if I think REAAAALLY hard...I'll get lady-parts cancer. XD But better not hope for it. O_O'

xD I think you might be right. Health care might cover some of it...or, by the time I finish college + stuff, it might be completely covered. @_@ At least 7 years. XD

I've been wondering about the exact same thing. I plan on relocating to Canada for College [provided I get accepted, you know?] and knowing how things work there would be immensely helpful. xD
