Read them especially if you're new to roleplay! If you're an old hand at it, as it were, you can probably get away with just skimming. Anyway...
Style
We ask that you post novel-style. This means third-person, quotations around statements, periods at the ends of sentances. No ::blinks:: or anything like that - just say "He blinks." And remember, the more detail you put into it, the better it will be! "He blinks slowly, rather confused about just what the pretty feline had meant" is more interesting and informative than just "He blinks." ^^ (Oh! But try to avoid smilies in your RPs too!)
You needn't post a novel every time, but leave more than a few words. A nice, hefty paragraph is ideal, if you can manage it. There's always something more to say, and I'm sure you can think of it! Besides, it gives a person a lot more to write on than if you just sit down by their side and take a sip of your drink. Get into it. Describe what they're thinking, or how they sit, or have them go on to do something else. It makes for much more interesting roleplay, in the end.
Try to at least sort of watch your spelling and grammar. You don't have to get every word right, and we realise that grammatical errors are pretty normal, but don't go overboard. You know what bad writing looks like; just don't do that and you'll be fine. Make some effort; that's all we ask. : )
Threads
If you want to start a new roleplay, make a new thread! Simple, right? Remember though, threads aren't there to just introduce a new place and then let other people come and interact in it. Feel free to make a new setting, but you have to have *your* character interacting with it as well.
In other words, don't say "The dining room is large and warm, with big tables and lots of chairs so everyone can sit down. There's a large set of drawers on the left, full of cutlery and glasses" and leave that as your post. Instead of doing something like that, try to imply it all through roleplay - using your character. For example...
"Maya walked into the large, warm dining room with a sigh. She took a seat at one of the many large tables (they could probably fit the entire school in here if they wanted to) and lay her head in her hands, her back to the large chest of drawers that held all of their eating utensils."
You've gotten across all the same information as you had in the first post and we'll still be perfectly able to make it a new destination, but you've managed to do so in a more interesting and useful (roleplay-wise) way. Just describing a place is NOT a good way to start off a thread, so try to avoid it whenever possible! Roleplay is about people interacting with people, not people interacting with surroundings. Give them someone to play with!
Etiquette
Yes, there is such a thing as roleplaying etiquette. First off, don't take control of other people's characters unless you have their explicit permission to do so. Controlling other people's characters is very rude, and it takes away from the point of roleplaying in the first place. If you're just going to write a story on your own, don't use our time to do it!
If you want to join someone's thread, a thread that doesn't say "open to all" or obviously has two people in a more private situation, it's nice to PM the thread starter and ask them if you can join first. Chances are they'll say yes, but they might have a story already planned out, so you shouldn't just barge in. : )
Characters
You can play anything here, you know that, but keep in mind a couple important things when making/playing your character...
1) No one is perfect. Everyone has their flaws, so make sure your character isn't an exception to this!
2) There are no all-powerful beings in our school. We're all in high-school, after all, and while some of us may be very strong, we're not the be-all and end-all of the world. Don't act as though you have godly powers. It usually just makes people think you're kind of annoying.
3) A corollary to the last one - take your hits! Even if you can regenerate damage, getting punched in the face will still stun you and throw off you balance. Don't get hit with a wall of force and just keep walking forward with a small smile, unless you're going to explain what you did to make a hole in that wall of force. You can't get hit by anything with kinetic energy and have there be no effects - it's not possible. So, even if you only stumble, stumble! There's nothing more frustrating than hitting someone and having nothing happen.
4) Even if only a little, put some thought into your characters - the more the better! Be as specific and descriptive as you can when making someone up. We don't have a minimum length here, but the more personality and history someone has, the more interesting they are! :3
More might come if it becomes necessary, but I'll leave you with that to mull over for the moment. Happy hunting!
