The Guide to The Perfect (but not Mary-sue!) OC!
It's like a condom, safe and fun (most of the time)! =D (If offended by this subtitle, please tell me and I will remove.)

So you popped in here going "Suuuuuure." Guess what? It is at least 95% correct on helping you correct your most likely Mary-Sue! If you already have a roleplay-proof OC, you may want to take a look at this guide for fun, or to make sure. It's always nice to know what you're doing wrong or to assure that you're OC is safe for exposure.

I think we've all been in either of these scenarios:

A) So you're in this roleplay, and it seems like a lot of fun! But... there's one person always making comments about mary-sues, but you blow them off. They can't possibly be talking about you! Your Mew Mew Remon has black hair with green eyes and wears Ichigo's outfit, and falls in love with Keiichiro despite how ***** it is to do so! Oh, they can't possibly be talking about you~!

Okay, guess what? They are! Sit tight and enjoy the ride.

B) So you're in a roleplay, and you feel as if your Mew is not up to par with everyone else's. You notice how lacking in detail you are with yours (or how incredibly detailed you are about her looks). Perhaps you need more guidance?

That's what this guide is for.

Understand this: I am NOT telling people how to make their OCs. I am guiding those with helpful tips that wll make their character appear less sue-ish.

WARNNG: This thread is a mess. This is version 1.0. The next version will be MUCH more informative and organized. =D

I also DO take examples from ACTUAL profiles and characters.

What's In a Name?
Letters! =D

Let's move onto the first topic, names.

You need SOMETHING to call your character by. Sure, you can call her "Suzy" or "Lani" or "Jasmine", but neither of those fit the Tokyo Mew Mew universe if your OC is a Mew Mew.

You never really want to go over a first a middle, and two last names if your character is also carrying her mother's maiden name. Having a first and last name is good enough really.

A good example:
Anaberra Vasquez

A bad example:
Susanne Melony Dawn Love Jackson

The latter screams mary sue.

In the Tokyo Mew Mew universe, the characters all have foods as their names, usually translated into Japanese or native tongue.
Ichigo - Strawberry
Minto - Mint
Retasu - Lettuce
Purin - Pudding
Zakuro - Pomengrate (sp?)
Ringo - Apple
Berii - Berry

Normal names will not work here. Look up foods you like or would fit your character, and keep in mind that your fruit should have a color that corresponds with their color scheme. I've never see a blue orange, have you?

Do not name your characters Ichigo, Minto, etc. It's not being original.
Having super long Japanese names aren't original either.

My own last name means "Son of ____". It has no relation to my own name. Having you character's name being "Bani of the Sky's Moon" is just pure bull.

Personality Check
Y'know, like Ribbon Strawberry Check? =D'

You need a personality for your Mew Mew. You need to know how she'll act in situations, and now that your character should be a developing one. In a roleplay if they're cold hearted, they should over time let ther heart warm up a bit. It's not human to act a certain way forever.

You need to have cons and pros to your Mews personality. Don't make them a copy of one of the already existing Mew Mews. Give them some trait that'll let them be noticable in a not in a completely obvious manner. Have two pros for every con, or two cons for every pro. You can try and balance them, but they may cancel out.

Don't make your character be clumsy and smart. Retasu~!
Don't make your character cold, sophisticated. Zakuro~!
Don't make your character hyper and cute. Purin~!

.... UNLESS you can make these traits YOUR OWN. As in, change the and add other key parts to her personality.

Don't make your character a copy of yourself. You may be smart, but your character doesn't have to be. You may be a great singer, but sure as hell you character does not have to be that!

Along with personality, disorders, obsessions, and hobbies are important.

Singers are so over used! Try a librarian.
Dancers are getting old. Try the flute, biznatch.

Dress Up
I think of Sailor Moon. =D Moon Power Makeup~!

- Mew Mew Berii and Ringo will not be taken into account, as they aren't really Mew Mews. They're marketing ploys.

Key Parts to a Human Appearance:
- Darker hair compared to Mew Mew form.
- Eyes are different color compared to Mew Mew form.

Required Key Parts to a Cafe Mew Mew Uniform:
-
-
-
-

Required Key Parts to a Mew Mew Uniform:
- Neck choker with fuzz baring gold pendant with heart
- Arm puffs with fuzz
- Leg garter with fuzz
- Mew Mew Mark somewhere visible
+ All coordinated to the outfit's color scheme
+ Garter is normally found on left leg, though Ichigo wears hers on her right.

Key Parts to the Mew Mew Appearance:
- Hair is brighter. In some (but FEW cases) hair length and style can be changed, like Retasu's.
- Color MATCHES color scheme.
- Eyes change to match color scheme. Zakuro's eyes may be blue, but guess what? Blue is right next to violet/indigo on the color chart.
- Mark should be visible.

Common Mistakes
- Hair length is changed to be longer or pulled into some risiculous style. This is only allowed in Retasu's and Ichigo's case, buth those were small changes. Some character's hair appear to grow three feet! Talk about ouch.
- Outfts consist of more than two colors. You have your base color, like Retasu's is green She has a little bit of white in her outfit, and that's all. Purin is redorange and yellow, and Ichigo is pink and dark pink. Pick a base and a coordinating color. Like white and gray, not blue and yellow.

Big Breasts? So American!
- I have see a rise in big-breasted Mew Mews, with Japanese lineage. That is incredibly RARE. Most Japanese women average an A or B cup. I've seen DD! Unless your character had a back-killing boob-job, or she is full-fledged American, it is rather sue-ish how you make your character so lustful.

Mew Mew Style
Mew Mew Grace! Mew Mew Style in yo' face!

Let's get the main topic here straight.
The Mews Mews are RED DATA animals.

Red DATA = Endangered

Your Mew Mew's personality should match that animal also. Dolphins are smart, so is Retasu. Monkeys are the picture of hyperness, as is Purin. Grey Wolves aren't the most friendliest of wolves, and neither is Zakuro. You get the point.

You should always be specific about your animal. Don't just put rabbit. What kind? Don't put wolf. What kind? I see so many...

Red Data DNA: Cat

.....?

So that cat I see outside... It's endangered? Oh my god! I better save it from extinction!!!11one

Not.

There is a difference between being endangered and being rare genetically.

Being endangered means that species is about to go extinct. This means that that White Herring that's more white than the others is just as endangered as the one with the yellower beak.

An example of this would be the Tiger. Tigers, just like other animals, have mutated genetics. A rare gene that passes through them is a gene that pertains to their coat color. This gene causes their fur appear to be blue-ish grey. They have a different coat color, that is all. It's a rare condition, but guess what? It's not a seperate breed.
I am basing this off a Mew Mew I see often. Names will not be named, and I am NOT taking this down.

I have seen somebody put Germoodle. That's a mixed breed, the parents a German Shepherd and a Poodle/Water Dog. That is not an endangered animal. It is a mutt.

Your best bet and checking for animals is looking at updated lists of endangered animals. Never use an animal if you have no idea how it acts, where it's from, or it's basic physical traits.

Did you know....Zakuro can't be considered a Mew Mew anymore? The Grey Wolf is about to be taken off the Endangered Animals list as it's population has grown. Thus, she isn't a Red Data animal. =o

Wow, I didn't know Zakuro was no longer a Mew. Well the series first started in 2000 of course. But still, that's interesting.

Also I just wanna say about all those OC makers is that if you plan on making them have a history, NEVER make the character's parents or a relative dead or no longer in their life. It's boring and SO overused a lot. Try making them have a normal family life. It may be predicable and boring but it's better then the depressing orphan crap, don't you think?

And that's my two cents Xp
PostPosted: Tue Feb 13, 2007 6:14 pm

True. That's why if she had ben a Mew Mew now, it'd be null. XD

Unfortunately, Grey Wolves may be endangered within a year of their being take off of the list. Their pelts are worth nice bundles of cash.
Thanks for the tidbit! I'll be sure to add that. =3
If anybody wants to make a rant on a style of Sue, please go ahead and I'll add it to one of the reserved posts. =D

Ah, one thing I've noticed with some of the fan Mews I've run across in my short time in the fandom is that they tend to not follow a few of the other conventions of the Mew uniform, including wearing a strapless dress when over the age of ten and having visible seams that run along the sides of the outfit (with a double seam along the midsagittal line). Quite a few are also very over-decorated with ribbons and bows up the yin yang; they make Berii and Ichigo's game makeover look modest in comparison.

... Hah hah, not like I'm one to talk. ^^;;

So far as character designs are concerned, a lot of the names are meant to be puns and stuff; this especially includes the weaponry. I've seen some very cutesy fan Mews carrying some very dangerous implements of doom-ness, mostly swords and scythes. If one looks closely at all of the Mews' weapons, they'll see that they are all based on a musical instrument of some sort. Furthermore, the name of the weapon can blend into the food name of the Mew, adding to the general corny feeling of the series. For example:

Ichigo has a bell, the Strawberry Bell (Strawberuberu).
Minto has (techincally) a harp, the Mint Tone Arrow (Mintoonaro).
Retasu has her castanets, the Lettuce Castanets (Retasunetto).
Purin has the her tamborines, the Pudding Rings (Puringu).
Zakuro has (technically) a flute, Zakuro Cross Whip/Zakuro's Whip (Zakurosuwipu).

I never noticed that! =D

I'll add that soon.

I'm just uber POed right now.

A member of our guild had her character stolen, and nowis being trashed for it.

The owner of the "Blue Tiger" DNA mew is involved too.

GAWD. >____>''

Anyway, if anyone would like to add more, please post!
