Sigh. I was having this conversation-turned-arguement with my girlfriend (another avid Placebo lover btw), and we got into the topic of how Placebo was one of the bands who created emo-rock.
Mainly because of all the angst and drug/sex reference in the lyrics. Actually, possibly because of the style Placebo is known for.
So, not revealing what either party argued for/against - I ask you, placebo lovers of Gaia:
Is Placebo one of the bands whose seed spread forth a nation of emos?

I don't think so. They were never really emo in my eyes. Emo isn't ust about the lyrics, it's also about the sound and the look. They did start off pretty punkish, which now (and I have no idea why) is commonly linked to emo. I still don't see them as emo.

Placebo may have added to what would become emo, but I think the actual forefathers of emo were The Smiths, Morrissey in particular. 3nodding

Placebo? Emo? emo ? Nooo. They don't sound like any of the bands I've heard labelled 'emo'. As for lyrical content, sex, drugs, and angst have always been prevalent in music as far as I can tell.
Um, anyway, there are lots of popular 'emo' bands around here, but Placebo have never really been big. I don't really think they're connected.

NOBODY KNOWS WHAT EMO IS ANYMORE.
HAWTHONRE HEIGHTS IS NOT EMO.
FROM FIRST TO LAST IS NOT EMO.
MCR IS NOT EMO.
AND NEITHER IS PLACEBO.
YOU ALSO CANNOT BE AN 'EMO KID'. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE A MUSIC GENRE, AS A HUMAN BEING.
WTF.

geeze, Ive never thought of placebo that way. I wouldnt say it is. To me, Placebo is too unique to be labelled ( well .. you know, some of their songs are like punkish, others more pop, some are more like synth-pop, or sometime pop rock ... but you cannot describe placebo in one word )
and yeah, every one start calling every one emo and stuff, I think it's pretty annoying.
I know some people who will say some group is emo because they talk about feeling ( and emotions ) in their song... but, just think about it, you almost cannot make a good song without talking about emotions and feelings ( like those screaming/metal/i dont know group that sing ( no .. they dont sing, they scream) about pulling off the eyes of some sluth and I dont know .. some kind of stuff ..... its just WIERD 0.0 ) so to me, a good song talk about feelings. ( or got feelings in it ( ya now what I mean ? ))
and it's funny how, since the emo is coming out, like, lots of bands that werent called emo, are now.
well .. neways .. my point of view

Emo came out in the 80's.
There is NO WAY Placebo is emo.
It's not possible.
Go look at the wikipedia article for emo, and I'll bet you've nearly never heard of any of those bands.
Because nobody ever talks about emo music.
Because it's not commonly liked.....it's not popular......it's not what people say is emo.

Ok. Points have been taken and evaluated. But you have to admit, some early placebo songs were...whiney...and emotionally high strung. And I'm not dissing Placebo. Why would I do that? And more importantly - if I were to diss placebo...Why would I do it here?
Lets re-word this question to make it a lot more superficial.
DID PLACEBO'S DRESS SENSE INFLUENCE MODERN-DAY 'EMO' OUTFITS?
Sorry for the caps + large font thing. I use it to direct your attention at the new *and improved* question.
What is your verdict now?

The way they currently dress, or from way back when? 'Cause there's a mighty difference between Teenage Angst's furry red jacket and Med's... so close to nothing blaugh .
hee hee. i think you've hit a bit of a nerve amongst a few of us with this topic. well done. mrgreen
Hm... I wonder if any of the current 'emo' boys would have the balls guts to wear one of Bri's short little dresses. Ack! I just got Gerard Way in a miniskirt in my head. Must go wash brain! xd

Must go wash brain! xd I actually saw a guy during a Placebo concert (2006, Australia) who wore mini skirt and everything. And he looked so much like YOUNG Brian Molko. Kudos to him really. But yes, Placebo's dress sense is so much more... matured now. And so has the voice and songs really. No more Teenage Angst for these 30-somethings wink

Was he yummy? Did you hug him? If I saw anyone around here dressed like that and looking like a baby Bri, I'd assult them with hugs.
Then again, I am a bit strange... 3nodding
