Didn't know what time it was and the lights were low I leaned back on my radio Some cat was layin' down some "Get it on rock 'n' roll," he saidWhat happens when you can't find anyone in the area? Do you assume there's no one else there? Or, maybe, you keep wondering if you just haven't looked hard enough...?
The Space Oddity is a relatively small cargo transport ship, usually carting raw materials back and forth between planets, space stations, and various colonized planets. It's getting toward being obsolete, but it's a tough little hunk of junk, with a loyal (if sometimes dysfunctional) crew. What should have been a routine mining trip is about to become very strange indeed... Then the loud sound did seem to fade Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase That weren't no D.J., that was hazy cosmic jive

He told me: Let the children lose itRules
1. Follow the usual code of conduct. TOS, that sort of thing. Keep things PG-13 or so as far as romance goes. 2. No godmoding, auto-hitting, etc. I can't stand that sort of thing, and it's very unfair to other players. 3. I actually don't care how far you take violence, but try not to go into needless or excessive detail, hmm? Put a warning at the top of an especially violent post in bold, red font of a one- or two-point increase in size if you do have something really and truly gory. 4. PM your profiles/applications. Thank you. 5. Oh, and, obviously, be literate. That's a given. 6. In the subject of your profile PM, type in "I'm Afraid of Americans" so that I know you've read through the rules. (And, yes, actually, I am American.) 7. If you don't get the character you wanted, please don't whine. It's going to be first-come, first-serve, so I can't really help it if you don't snap up what you wanted. 8. If you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask me! Just do so in a PM. 9. My word is final. If you haven't noticed already, I make the rules in this particular rp. 10. If you're thinking about leaving, be very sure you want to. Your character will likely be killed off if you no longer want to play, and could very well get snatched up by someone else. 11. Be able to post at least once or twice a week, especially if a certain scene is centering on a list of names that includes you. If you're going somewhere, just tell me, and your character can be set on a hiatus.
These may be updated at any time if problems arise. Let the children use it Let all the children boogie

There's a starman waiting in the sky He'd like to come and meet us But he thinks he'd blow our mindsAccepted Characters Gaian Name: N/A (NPC/Silver) Character Name: Leon Henriksen Sex: Male Age: 29 Occupation: Captain Appearance: An average height, about 5'10 or so, with a vaguely athletic build. Henriksen sports short, brown hair and a slight tan. Bio: Henriksen originally started out as a worker at a UEF docking station, he worked his way up to the status of captain. He can come off as cynical, unreasonable, or even just downright mean, but he's just one of those sort of people. It can be hard to tell whether or not he likes you if you don't know him very well. Henriksen has been the captain of the Space Oddity for it's full term of 8 years. Skills: Marksmanship, mouthing off, etc. Anything extra: Much of Henriksen's job involves making sure things go right--checklists, fueling and supplying, paperwork and reports--dealing with the higher-ups, and looking after his crew. This may be why his personality can seem a bit short-fused sometimes.
--------- ~To-be-completed~ Gaian Name: N/A (NPC/Silver) Character Name: Thomas Dauerty Sex: Male Age: 32 Occupation: Doctor Appearance: Bio: Dauerty (if you're having trouble, pronounced: Daw-ert-ee) has been part of the Oddity's crew for it's full 8 years, having worked and trained on a space station in the GF for 5 or 6 years before that. Working with Henriksen has quickened his tongue, and he still retains a physician's humor (or, in other words, easily joking or ordering people about when it comes to their own body). He tends to spend his free time on board in his office, playing chess or other board games with his AI personality, Bill (note that this is not the ship's AI, just a little handheld one, rather like a PDA). Skills: Knowledgable in his field and practice (of course). Anything extra: Nothing extra.--------- Gaian Name: SilverDragonGrrl Character Name: Tara Kaelin Sex: Female Age: 27 Occupation: Mechanic Appearance: Tara has violet hair of about jawline length, green eyes, and stands at about 5'7". Her left arm is a synthetic limb (and obviously so; it's metallic) which she rarely covers up on board. Since she's usually crawling around, climbing into, or suspended from various parts of the ship while fixing it, she's quite fit, although she doesn't have much tone to her skin (or, in other words, she's a bit pale). Bio: Kaelin has been working as a mechanic for the UEF since she was just over 17; she's been working as a mechanic for herself since she was 20; and she's been part of the Space Oddity's crew for a good seven years, having joined shortly after recieving her bionic arm. She's a little sarcastic, mostly in response to the captain, and usually slightly pessimistic when it comes to her job since the Oddity has seen plenty of missions and constantly needs something or another repaired. Skills: Skilled mechanic--especially when it comes to the ship and her false arm, able to give a good whack to most of the crew, and a quick thinker. Anything extra: Her job usually requires a lot of checkups on the ship, so Kaelin is often the last one into cold sleep and the first one out of it during a long trip.--------- Gaian Name: [[ hypocracy Character Name: Szczeosny Deren Sex: Male Age: 25 Occupation: Co-Pilot/ Communications Appearance: right Bio: That particular picture was taken a few years ago, when Deren was still in the academy, by someone from an art school that he was friends with. As you’ve probably come to the conclusion of, Deren is the one on the right, not the one with the bowler hat. The one with the bowler hat is possibly a boyfriend, if so, a very short-lived one. Deren didn’t want to get his picture taken, and in any case, didn’t pose. The picture was used in an illustration class. That’s all you will ever need to know about it. Deren still looks like he does in the picture. Deren was born on the SOA, in a place, in fact, that wasn’t quite what you’d consider modernized, even if it was on another planet. Most things there were modernized, but if you went there, you’d swear to see a donkey cart. He grew up with a bunch of meth addicts, who might have been his real parents, they might not have been, and he likes to think that they weren’t. When he was eight, Deren fell victim to an accident, in which someone made what equaled out to a homemade bomb, only not very carefully. The police actually found out about this, and took Deren into custody, and, well, immediate medical treatment, as you can imagine. He was taken in by relatives in a nearby city, who, so much as they were kind, were very strict in Deren’s education. He got sent to private school for most of his life, and is currently fresh out of the aerospace academy. Deren’s one of these people who most feel is wasting a great gift. He’s got a marvelous voice (speaking, not singing), and yet, you have to force it out of him if it’s not something technical. He’s quite good at what he does, though most of it is sheer force of habit, and, well, nothing special. He still retains some of the roots of his country days, where he never really had to do anything, and this follows in that he never does anything extra, and is one to laze about in his spare time. Skills: He knows quite a few languages, seven, in fact, though only three fluently. This is good in a communications officer, no? Anything extra: Nothing extra.--------- Gaian Name: Kalania_Heartsbane Character Name: Hudson Thai Sex: Male Age: 21 Occupation: Pilot Appearance: Hudson is short and skinny with too much hair on his head to keep tamed down. His skin is pale and freckled, though most of the time you can't notice the freckles. When exposed to sun (rare) they show up really well. Though his appearence is constantly scruffy, with loose clothing, mis-tied knots, and untucked shirts, his most notable feature is the (aforementioned) hair. Kept about three inches long, it is dark red with burnished gold highlights. And stands up (literally) every which way. Bio: Born to two artists as a sixth child on a Mars Colony, Hudson was raised on the Red Planet. Though his seven siblings all have artist inclinations, Hudson can't draw, paint, or design. He has horrible colour coordination as well. He was always quick with his hands and when he finished what schooling was provided, he job-hopped around the solar system, first as a mechanic, than as general computer repairman, and other various jobs both on-planet and off. He took up piloting with a natural ease one year ago and is a relatively new member of the Space Oddity crew. In comparison, this one year+ stint is long-term for him. He once had six different jobs in one year. This unsettled bounciness shows up in his personality as well. Skills: He has quick reflexes and wicked hand-eye coordination, of course. Skilled at (if one could call it a skill) fasting for long periods of time, he can go for as many as four days without food or sleep. Though he does need water. Also skilled in programming, basic mechanics and making stupid remarks. Oh yes, and he can knit. (Long story.) Anything extra: ??There's a starman waiting in the sky He told us not to blow it 'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile

He told me: Let the children lose itNews 1/29/07 All but the three worker characters have been taken. If they aren't taken soon, one of the following will happen: a.) I'll throw the characters out and we'll start. b.) I'll see if anyone wants to doubletask. c.) I'll do more doubletasking myself, and have them be NPCs (or, in other words, characters I'll take over if needed). Oh, and if you were wondering, yes, there is a reason the captain and ship's doctor are NPCs. But that's for me to know and you to find out. 1/27/07 We're open! *Trumpet fanfare, fireworks, sparklers, etc.* Let the children use it Let all the children boogie

Background Setting The year is 2135. Science has advanced enough to allow life on other planets in colonies and in space stations set in orbit around planets, moons, and stars. Medicine has also benefited from this leap in technology, wiping out many diseases (except for colds, of course; you just can't get rid of that crap) and offering synthetic replacement limbs for people who've had amputations.
Earth is no longer truly divided into countries; rather, nations are divided by their location in space, giving planets their own zip code, as it were. There are now several nations, including: The United Earth Federation ( UEF) Ares Republic ( Mars; AR) Saturn Orbit Alliance ( Anything in orbit of the gas giant; SOA) Ganymede Faction ( Moons and space stations of the same sector; GF) While we've colonized our own solar system, there are other (relatively) nearby planets and moons as-yet uncivilized that are used for their resources. Each of these shows no signs of life, and are assumed very dead. Fairly quick travel to these rocks is achieved through hyperspace, a sort of wormhole effect that many people don't actually grasp entirely. Trips still take about a month or so each direction, and during most of this time period the crew will go into cold sleep--a cryogenic stasis that cuts down on the energy expended by the ship itself. However, ships are always equipped with enough supplies, fuel, and oxygen to last for more than enough time to get a waking crew through over an entire round trip. Not planning for the possible is courting disaster.

Media References Reference something in a post? Tell me, and I'll put it here. Music~ Starman by David Bowie - Reference: Used in title. The lyrics are also used in the first several posts.~ Loving The Alien by David Bowie - Reference: Used in secondary title.(Warning: the video is pretty weird. This version doesn't have the static screech heard in another, though, which is good.) ~ Space Oddity by David Bowie - Reference: Name of the cargo ship.~ I'm Afraid of Americans by David Bowie (yes, I used a lot of reference to him) - Reference: The "use this as the subject line for the PM" code.('Nother warning: This one's a little loud in general. The video's also a little bizarre.)
