I just discovered I should be able to afford top surgery without much problems or having to take out a loan! xp Not immediately of course, but my folks prolly won't let me get it done for like 2-3 years anyway...
I was researching surgery stuff and figured out that when I do it, I'm gonna go with this woman called Beverly Fischer. She works in Maryland (which is about as close as I'm gonna get from "The Commonwealth" (VA)), has an amazing reputation of having excellent service and being very FtM friendly, and after checking out surgeries she's done on Transster, she seems to be one of the best out there (stateside at least). Anyway, she charges a flat $6800 whether you get bilateral or periareolar and can arrange hotel stay for the 10 days of followup for $790, so I have to save up at least $7590.
And currently I'm working about 21 hours a week (more when I'm not in school, but to underestimate my earings is better than overestimating) for $5.15 an hour plus roughly $3.50 an hour in tips. Not counting the tips in this (because I plan on using the tips for whatever I need), that's $108.15 a week before taxes (and they generally take $15 a week out, so it'd be $93.15), or $4843.80 a year after taxes.
My scholarship/grant/etc covers my tuition and fees, but is not enough to cover the complete cost of housing, but by switching to commuting from home, I get rid of the usual $1500 or so a semester I have to pay for housing (and I only live about 15 min from the school so it's not a huge commute). Then I even get some spillover money back from my financial aid.
So then at $4843.80, that's $9687.60 after the second year and $14531.40 after the third year.
So in short, I can afford top surgery! xd
(I'm sorry but this just warmed up my day.... whee )

woot! that's awesome. i heard fischer is a good surgeon. biggrin
i doubt i will be able to afford top surgery while in art school. it's hard enough to afford art supplies. xP
i am thinking about going with brownstein, but he's way on the west coast. i really like his results on transter. he usually deals with larger chested guys. i have seen fischer's results on transter too and her results are good too. 3nodding

I was actually considering Brownstein, but California's way too far away... sweatdrop
It's ok though because I'm like a large A/small B and most of the stuff I've seen of Fischer's is around that range (rather than like Cs and Ds on others that I can't really compare to). And it looks like she gives good results even with the periareolar stuff (which I wanna do -- almost no scarring when it's done and full n****e sensation), whereas I've seen some stuff done by others where the guy looked like a girl that just had a chest reduction... sweatdrop
Sorry to hear about the financial burdens, but if you really need, you should be able to take out a loan from your bank or credit union or something. I'd say just work on building some good credit a little at a time in the meantime so that when you go to take some money out, they won't charge you an arm and a leg in interest....
Maybe just an arm... xp

That's great! I'm happy for ya. I still wonder how I'll pay for my own surgery.. Which I plan on getting in one or two years.
One, if they let me at 17 years old.. it's not like they'll get any bigger anyway. Brownstein is my choice so far.

Hope that scenario works out for you.
I, too, am small-chested, so right now binding is enough for me, but when I'm out of school (or at least back in the states) I'll start to think about whether I want to take the surgical route or not. Seems terrifically expensive.
On a somewhat related note, I have read that in Iran, the government will pay for SRS procedures.. or at least, did, or was going to... as long as it results in the person leading a "normal, heterosexual" life, anyway. rolleyes

Well I'm glad I don't live in Iran....I just can't pretend to be attracted to girls...
But from what I hear though, the SRS they're providing there isn't for transpeople really, but for gays or lesbians (although straight transguys and transwomen would kinda luckily be seen by the gov't as lesbians and gays). I was reading this story about this lesbian who they were trying to force to get SRS because she loved women, and they threw her in prison a few times because she wouldn't get the surgery or start being straight. (She ended up fleeing the country but I'm not sure where she went.) It's sad really...
And yeah, it's pretty much gonna be uber expensive for everything surgical....But I can't imagine going through the rest of my life with boobs and a puss, so... sweatdrop
Everybody's gotta weigh the pros and cons for himself.

A local friend of mine, Emiry, had his surgery with Fischer a couple of years ago, and his chest looks fantastic. He recently went back for a revision due to a little variation on one side. He had a peri, and in that, he's a lucky fellow for the lack of scarring in such a procedure.
Myself, I went to Melissa Johnson in Springfield, MA for bilateral. She did a fantastic job, and her cost was similar to Fischer's.

I've actualy just been talking to Dr. Fischer's staff this morning. I'm looking at getting a peri with her this coming July for my birthday. I know a lot of guys that have went to her and been very pleased with their results. Unfortunately I'm one of those cases that are on the fence for peri or double masectomy. However looking on the before shots on Transster there are guys that were larger than I am who's chests have turned out fantastically after a peri with her, so I'm remaining hopeful. If however I have to get a double masectomy instead, I will probably see Dr. McLean in Ontario.
Personally, I think Dr. Brownstein is overrated and he's knows it, hence why he over charges. But to each his own.

My friend Chase went to Brownstein in November for his chest surgery. I have to admit, his chest looks absolutely amazing. I'm rather envious, despite how well my chest turned out. His incision contouring is much better than mine. Then again, when I had my surgery, I was about 230lbs (104 kg), which was sure to affect my result, and Chase is quite a bit lighter than I was.
