This is a new evangelical movement that is gaining strength throughout America. Virginity balls are where a young woman signs what is basically a contract with her father to remain pure until marriage. Personally, I think this is the scariest, most disturbing thing I've heard in my life. What do you all think?

the link is blocked here at work, but the title sounds just...wrong. I can see pledging yourself to keep your virginity until marriage...but to your father? huh? why?

Besides that shouldn't the pledge be made to God and not man (even if it uis your dad)? Would that contract be legal and binding? What would be the point? I never talked to my dad about any of that stuff anyways. Thats just weird.

Well... First of all, I couldn't make that pledge to my father at this point, lol. But even if I could, I don't think I would. Honestly, it's none of his business. And while I love my daddy very much, I wouldn't want him prying into my life THAT far. We aren't incredibly close, as some people are with their fathers, and so asking me about my sex life would be extremely awkward. =/ But hey, if a girl is that into purity and wants to stay a virgin until marriage, then go for it. I just think that a few factors have to be in place--the commitment of the girl to keep her pledge; the close relationship between father and daughter; and the courage of the father to inquire into the girl's personal life.

okay, keeping in mind that I've been sick in bed for the past two days....Demigoddess, the link title made me start laughing...and I really had a very hard time stopping.... xp
I think the idea of being accountable to your father is good, and the idea that someone can be close enough with their father to have conversations like this...but I think it is a bit creepy. I'm certainly not in a place in my life where I would make that promise to my father, not because that isn't my intention, but because that simply isn't my relationship with my father. His policy is that I politely keep him uninformed on things like that, unless it is something serious. I love my dad, but...he doesn't need to or have the want to know anything about my sexuality.

I can totally see him doing that, too. whee he's not going to give us crap about that on teh wedding day, is he? I can take it from him, but we don't want him to get my dad started gonk

I have pledged my virginity to God and myself but, I always figured it was something my father never wanted to know about.....like when I'm on my period he doesn't want to know. They run hand in hand I think. 3nodding
