I have been wondering about this for a while now. . .

Okay, we all know that Hiei is technically a mix between a fire demon and an ice apparition, even though he is generally refered to as a fire demon because his powers are fire based. However, why doesn't he have any ice based abilities? I know in his fight with the Blue Dragon he proved to be resistant against ice based attacks, but one can argue that is due to being a fire demon, so of course ice and extreme cold wouldn't bother him. We haven't seen any abilities that are undoubtily from his mother. The same goes with Yukina: she is shown only having iced based abilities.

Theories and Arguments I Have Come Up With:

Ice Demons Can Only Be Female:

For a moment I considered this, but then I thought of the Blue Dragon and Touya. So it is possible for there to be male ice demons. However, if you want to get really in depth, there could be various sub-species of ice demons. The Koorime, the Blue Dragon, and Touya are all ice based demons, but they are obviously not of the same species. Koorime are always female, hence the translation Ice Maiden, and their children are always female, unless they go out and meet a male. Which leads me to think that in the Koorimes' genes, their abilites can only be passed onto females, explaining why Hiei has no, as far as we know it, ice based abilities. This can also explain why Yukina has no fire based abilities: the Koorime's gene could be dominant, as brown hair is over blond hair.
Also, speaking of sub-species, Hiei are Zeru are fire demons, but they are also not of the same species, which you can tell by their appearances and abilities - Zeru used only mortal flame attacks (regular fire) and Hiei uses the Darkness Flame (demonic fire) and he is also much faster. So, it leads me further to believe that even if demons use the same element, they aren't necessarily the same species.

Like Father, Like Son:

In some cases, a child will take after both parents, in other cases they will only take after one. One parent could be a great athlete, and one of their children will be very athletic, while the other couldn't throw a ball to save their life. This could be the case with Hiei and Yukina. As I said before, Hiei is described only as a fire demon; even when he was born he was engulfed in the flames from his powers. The Koorime also called him a "Boy of Fire". Obviously, Hiei takes strongly after his father; for all we know he could be the spitting image of him. Thus, it's quite possible that Hiei simply takes after his father and just doesn't have any talent with the element ice. Yukina, likewise, takes after only her mother. Also, because most people don't even know about their parentage and since the two only show abilities belonging to one element, then it would make sense that others only classifly them belonging to one species.

Yoshihiro Togashi Just Didn't Think Enough About It:

I know this defeats the purpose of the other theories, but it's quite possible. It just could have been too complicated and tedious to explain, so he simply ignored the situation all together, or the thought just didn't occur to him when creating the characters. I know we like to think there are reasons for everything, and in real life we can do so. But in fiction, and as a writer I understand this, people will just leave things as they are without ever giving a reason, thus creating "holes" as you can call them. Why is Hiei so short? Because he's Hiei. Why does he only have fire based abilities? Because he does. It's as simple as that, there are no reasons, Hiei is what he is and that is just the way Togashi-San made him.

In Conclusion:

I believe, for whatever reasons, Hiei doesn't have any ice based abilities, nor does Yukina have any fire based ones. It might not make much sense but if you think about it carefully enough and consider the possible reasons why, the case may become more reasonable than you initially thought. At first, the issue didn't make any sense to me, but after I considered the possibilities it became clearer.

Also, if you have any theories of your own feel free to post them. ^^

Hmmm, this was very interesting to read. ^-^ Once, I spent about 2 hours laying in my room wondering about this and I came to the same conclusions as you. Except I think that maybe Hiei does have ice abilities, but he just favors fire more. It could be possible that Hiei favored fire so much that he just let his ice based abilities die away until he would be unable to use them even if he tried.
Out of the theories I've come up with or heard, I think that I like the "Like Father, Like Son", as you put it, most. ^^

Also, I thought about your first theory, and I've come up with something else. Maybe Hiei was born the usual way and Yukina was born the Koorime way, and they, of course, wouldn't have alot of the same genes. Yukina would have all the genes of her mother since there was no father on her part. Hiei, on the other hand, was born with the combination of his father and his mothers genes. It could be that his fathers genes were just stronger in him than his mothers genes, as you said in your second theory.
That's what I think anyway. ^^;;

That's how I've heard it told.

I'm not sure how much stock I put in it though. It kinda doesn't make sense to me.

I mean, don't twins come from the same egg? So wouldn't Yukina (or Hiei at least) had to had been fertilized in some way? I dunno, maybe it's just a demon thing.

Thanks ^^

You see, I thought that, with all the fighting he does, then he would have shown a little bit of ice based abilities even just once in the show. But, he never did, which is why I think he doesn't. Though, what you said about his powers dying out due to favoring fire is quite possible. Things like that do happen in real life; someone is given a gift, which they neglet and they end up losing it.
I like your own theory as well, I hadn't thought of it that way, but it does make sense. I wish we had gotten to learn more about Hiei's father, it would have been fascinating to see what he was like. I love the idea of Hiei being the spitting image of his father, it's so cute! ^^

mizthang222: Only identical twins come from one egg that is split into two. In Hiei and Yukina's case, they are fraternal twins, non-identical, coming from two different eggs.

^^ I'm so glad my theories made sense. I was afraid I didn't explain them correctly. xD

Yeah, I love the idea of Hiei looking like his father also. ^-^ It's adorable! <3

I wished they would have went in more detail about his family life, though in ways, there isn't much importance about it. Hiei is a complexe character, maybe Yoshihiro Togashi wanted him to stay that way.
Truly, the only resemblance between Hiei and Yukina is obviously their crimson eyes.

But during the fight with Bui in the Dark tournament, Hiei added a bit of extra blue aura to his Koukuryuu, which had me thinking it represented some sort of demonic-ice energy. One might argue that such was just a separate level of energy, as it closely resembled Yusuke’s aura; however it is clear that Hiei’s energy is projected in a deep purple and that of his Koukuryuu in reds/blacks. This leads me to believe that Hiei in fact does have abilities passed on by his mother, he just doesn’t use them because he

A. Is no longer interested in drawing attention towards his lineage, especially with Yukina around and all those old enemies.
B. He spent more time mastering his fire abilities and swordsman ship as a child do to their more destructive tendencies and his ice related attacks are considerably weaker as a result.
C. He’d much rather focus on defeating his opponent while in
battle instead of constantly being distracted by the painful flashbacks and thoughts of his sister’s well being that might be brought up because of his ice aura.

And on the same token Yukina does posses fire capabilities, she just may have never known/didn’t practice them for fear of being cast over the side as her brother was/has no interest in the pain they can cause others. This is supported in their personalities, as Hiei may be cold like ice and Yukina warm as a flame, Hiei [as we all know <3] is loyal and understanding while Yukina is strong willed and responsible.
At least that’s how I see it….
Because their being each just like their parents invites the possibility of incest all too much...>_>’
