How do you know if there is global warming?

generally when the global temperature increases! if you mean how do you know the temperature increases are caused by human actions, global warming can be related to a correlation between greenhouse gas emissions, concentrations and the temperature. there is stacks of evidence and scientific proofs which make this very likely to be true

I mean there hasn't been really adequate tech for this untill just a few years ago. And even then, it still is not perfect at forecasting long term. How do we know what the temp was in 1862? I mean there was a war on then. (at least in America) Who would really care to keep accurate weather logs. It is not like they cared about global warming

It is not like they cared about global warming we can still see evidence from millions of years ago up to the present day - ice cores that have been untouched have shown that since the first industrial revolution, the temperatures have been increasing at a speed that has never been recorder before. although not completely accurate, people have been recording temperatures for many years, the Fahrenheit measurement has be going for 300 years! lots of scientists cared about logging things even if they didn't know what it was for, that is the whole nature of science!

even if I'm not totally convinced in global warming, there is enough evidence to worry me, i also think that people believing in global warming even if it doesn't exist is a good thing as it is giving people motivation to clean up the world, conserve energy, stop cutting down trees etc, and stop turning fertile land into desert and all the other 'bad' things we do!

The warmest temperatures ever recorded in human history have been within the past 14 years.
2007 has been said to be, the next hottest year on record.
Is that not proof enough..?
Hurricane Katrina. Icecaps melting. Greenland melting.

Hurricane Katrina. Icecaps melting. Greenland melting. No. Katrina was NOT caused by global warming. Likewise, there are periodic warming and cooling periods so ice melt in itself is not that big of a deal. Recent records really aren't enough to prove the climate is warming signifigantly. That's why we use stuff like ice core samples mentioned earlier. Looking at rings from really old trees is done as well. The thickness of rings tells us about the weather conditions of that time.

Yeah, but finding temperature graphs that are in anaccurate scale that start like a thousand years ago are hard to find.

And Katrina was a level 3 when it hit land, the only reason it casued do much destruction is becasue the levies were crap and the whole city is below sea level.

Purplepiratelynn Yeah, but finding temperature graphs that are in anaccurate scale that start like a thousand years ago are hard to find. the temperature and gas composition of the atmosphere from millions of years ago can be measured using ice cores from antartica

ekirei No. Katrina was NOT caused by global warming. sort of true, global warming does not directly make hurricanes worse, the breaching levees and the area being below see level accounted for most of the extreme damage of katrina. however, for a hurricane to form the sea temperature needs to be above 27'C / 82'F to cause the pressure to be low enough for the coriolis effect to cause the hurricane force winds to spin. this means that global warming causing increased sea temperatures means that suitable conditions for a hurricane happen more often so a hurricane if more likely to form, and the more hurricanes formed, the more likely one will hit an area where damage is extreme.

Even if you don't beleive global warming, the increase in carbon dioxide would be a huge coincidence if it wasn't caused by human activity 400,000 years is a very long time, and since the industrial revolution, the pattern has completely broken down it has been proven in 1000s labs across the world that co2 particles in the atmosphere absorb infra red heat energy, which increases the surrounding temperature the only thing thats not completely proven is whether the increase in co2 levels is enough to increase the temperature enough to cause serious damage over a short period of time (comparison to normal ups and downs of 100,000s years where life as enough time to move, adapt and evolve)

i think the only real debate of global warming is whether human influence is causing the temperature increase, and will it be dangerous, but that doesn't answer the question
what proof is there that global warming doesn't exist?

I understand what you just said, but Katrina was a level 3, which is severe, but not abnormal. There have always been hurricanes.

There have always been hurricanes. yes, i understand that, what i meant was that if more normal hurricanes happen (as a result of global warming) there will be a greater chance that one will hit a place where more damage is done because the place is vunerable.
