Ok, I am wondering why there is such a push from psych`s to dole out pills to every person who enters their office. Is it funding from the pharmacutal companies? Is it that they don`t want to try and fix problems, because in todays society there are too many? or do they honestly believe that the only way to fix problems, such as bipolar (which is the catagory i fall under) and ADHD etc. etc, are unable to be handled without medication?

Well, the only reason why my doctor prescribed me an anti-depressant is because I was having panic attacks and passing out. (Physical symptoms that interfere with your life usually warrant something like medication.) He also sent me to a psychologist for counseling, so it wasn't like he was just throwing pills at me. I was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and referred me to a psychiatrist who put me on lithium (a very old, trusted, safe drug -- also, it's an elemental metal, so that's about as "natural" as you can get, in my opinion).

I agree and i don`t. Yes, physical symptoms brought on by mental disorder probably need some form of meds to keep kontrol of urself. And i am not saying that medication should be completely trashed...and i realize u r not saying that it should be given to everyone.

And as far as lithium goes, it doesn`t matter that it is an element, so is uranium, but i don`t see ppl taking chunks of that every day. It is a tried tested and true drug, just be careful, it can cause mental side effects as well, and i have seen it mess up a persons life in the past, until they stopped taking it.

Well, from Christmas to New Year has the highest suicide rate, followed by the post-holidays downwards spiral most people take.

My doctor raises my Lithium as the days get shorter, like, during the winter when there's not as much light. Then once we get to the summer, my doseage goes down a little. He says it's suicide prevention, and that a lot of doctors do it.

I dunno... I've heard of some *really* nasty side effects from Lithium. My fiance was on Lithium for awhile. He said it sucked.
