Nathanel "Thane" Yan, just did his normal run of the shops in the mall and made his way to the main gates to leave and return to his little home on the hill. As he approached the stairs to go down to the ground level and to the gates, he never noticed the wet floor....

Thane woke up sometime later. Apparently he slipped and hit his head on the floor just before making it to the staircase. "Woo," he said to himself. "That would have killed me if I fell down those." As he said that, he looked up through the glass ceiling and saw that it was morning. His family must be worried sick over him not being home yet. He reached into his pocket to get his phone, but he couldn't find it. "Ah, it must have fell down the steps," he said aloud. He walked down the steps and found his phone, but when he tried to use it, the phone just brought up a series of busy singles.

So, he walked out towards the gates, but before he even opened the doors, he thought he saw something run to the right of him. He turned but nothing was there. He walked around inside the mall for a moment to make sure, but there was no one there. He made his way outside and went to his car. The car cranked up with a loud roar and he barreled his way home, but had he payed attention, he would have noticed that not a person was on the road. He made it home safe and sound and he expected the children to be getting ready for school, but instead found that no one was home. He sat down at the sofa to watch TV and a special news broadcast had come up...

"This is Action News at 6 with a special report that just came in. Apparently, a nightshift guard was found dead this morning in the Capital Mall. The guard was found by the morning shift and he has been identified to be Nathanel Yan, a father of two children and the husband of Nana Yan for twenty years. Stay tuned for more coverage on this...."

Thane shut the TV off. "NO! I...I'm sitting right here. How could I..." he started crying, "HOW COULD I BE DEAD!?!?!?" He ran outside and again something flashed off to the right and he heard someone say, "Yes, come," faintly as if the wind itself was speaking. "Who's there? Come out now!" A dark red robed figure stepped around the corner of the house. "Who are you? Why are you following me?" Nathanel asked.
"I..." it said in a ragged dusty voice, "I am that which all come to. I am the end. I am one of the few true immortals. I am called Death, the Reaper, Thanatos, and Hades....and I am here for you."
"But, but, I can't be dead, I woke up..." and Death interupted before Thane finished. "You thought you awoke on the top of the steps. A spector always awakens to what it wishes to believe in. In reality Mr. Yan, you are on the bottom of the steps with blood gushing oozing from your skull and this conversation we are having is simply the last millisecond of your existence and all of your moving around was the last seconds where you were falling....you want to see your family one last time."
Thane stood speechless as the truth came flooding in. The ground turned to porcelain tile, and he could see blood running from the tile...where his head was laying. "Please let me see them once more," he cried choking on his tears. "Please let me see my family...."
Death stood above Thane towering above Thane. "Very well... let this grand illusion be gone." And before his very eyes, Thane's wife and children were there crying as the paramedics tried to revive Thane....but he had been dead for many hours before. He died instantly and suffered no pain...or so the medics said. His pain was that of emotion. A death undeserved...but in the end, he wore a smile thinking always to this moment of his children and Nana Yan as he walks about in another world.

I beg to differ. I think it was really good. It's unfortunate and sad, but the end gives it justice. To see one's family in a situation like that is the ultimate gift, even if only for one last time and without interaction. Funny how a story about death can leave a reader with a happy thought as such. I liked it a lot.

Hey thanks.
Hm, in a way, I suppose it has a happy ending in some way, though one has to feel sorry for the children and Nana.

Heh, it reminds me that I want to die and not be cried for. I don't want a tear shed because of my death....if you really think I'm going on to a better place, then do me a service and not shed a tear for me. The funeral is not for the dead, but for the living, those who are left behind who have to get over the loss...the dead have already lost everything...but what if they do need something? What if the dead sometimes need something to be at a true peace?

I have a question... are you taking this anywhere Christophe? It sounds like a great opening to like a weekly series or something... like one of those novels you read in the newspaper, you know? I think it'd be cool if you added a small peice every week. It's really cool, an old concept, but a new way of looking at it. I approve.

After reading what Isis said, I actually started giving the idea of a second one based on the children and Nana. The only reoccuring character that I would be able to use in each of them(that is if I wanted to continue with this topic at least) would be Death and maybe the other true immortals. If you ever read the Sandman comics, you have Time, Death, Delirium, Despair, Desire, Sandman, and Destruction(I think that is all of them). I would probably have some different ones, but a similar concept.

In addition, I already have made 4 papers that I have typed out known collectively as the "Rants of a Madman." The subjects range from witches to dreams to even politics. I may have to post one of those on here. As far as the Another World bit goes, I'll have to see what Amadeus thinks about all this ((NO YOU WILL DO THE SERIES OR I WILL DESTROY YOU!!!)) Well now that I got those negotiations out of the way, I'll see what I can do.

That sounds like such a good idea! I would definitely be up for reading a series of short stories. I hate how no one comes here anymore for stories. I don't know. If you happen to stick with Death, maybe you can show the clip of someone entirely different's life and someone connect them with Nana or the children. Like maybe they crossed paths in some way and then you take it where you want. I don't know. Sparks in my mind, but can't get em out right. I really hope you do try the series thing, though.

Indeed. I'm already thinking about the second one and I am going to have Nana Yan come back along with introducing two more of the immortals--Joy and Pain. That is as far as I have gotten. I might introduce more, but right now, that is all.

Thats a gnarley idea. For some reason, I enjoy writing series. I always get one master thought that I want to convey, but one poem or story just won't do it justice.

I loved the story, dude, and I hope to see more.
