Well, I read through some of the Introductions thread, and am now feeling a bit odd because of the long, winding, and bumpy road I took to console RPG fandom, in which I wound up lost several times. Anyone got a yarn more messy than mine to make me feel better?
My first experience with RPGs was halfhearted trials of Roguelikes, namely SLASH 'EM and vanilla Angband, which were far above my paltry abilities (give me some credit - I was eight). I was introduced to console RPGs through - and I'm swallowing what pride I have to say it - Pokemon Blue (dammit, your definition of RPG irks me; on the same page you had reference (RPGFan), I much prefer response 2). Hey, recall that I was seven/eight when Pokemania swept the nation. Around the age of nine, I played around a bit in two MUDs, introduced to them by friends, but it didn't catch. Past that, my first taste of a respectable RPG was Legend of Dragoon - but that interest was quashed by my parents' then disdain of console gaming, from which they excluded handhelds.
Then, during a brief but powerful period of anime-craze, I found my way to (oh dear god) emulation, in which my first RPG was (pride flushed down the toilet now) - Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon: Another Story. Why? Because someone uploaded the file under the wrong name, and I was only looking to blow time.
Finding that it was fun (...), I sought out a few other titles and (unbeknowest to my parents at the time) procured an SNES along with a few titles by bribing my cousin. Having done so, I was finally set on track in playing FFV, the job system of which is still what I measure all turn-based and class-switch RPGs by. And things snowballed from there, including a rekindled interest in PC RPGs.
Yeah, what a mess, huh?

Hey, Pokemon Blue's fun, if utterly void of any real redeeming intellectual value, and Sailor Moon: Another Story is neat! Nothing shameful about liking it.
My rise to RPGs was fairly simple and quiet in comparison. Back in the olden days, when I was 7, I got an NES. My earliest games for it included Startropics 1, The Legend of Zelda 1, Crystalis, and Magic of Scheherazade. All but Zelda I had a blast with (the first Zelda, like every one following it, was only mildly entertaining, and I only ever even finished it 10 years later). They piqued my curiousity enough that, when I got a Super NES, I showed interest in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (I was a stupid child) and Secret of Mana (but not too stupid). SoM was fun enough that I kept enough interest in the genre to buy later games for it. In addition, Gameplayers had a little Subscriber's bonus in their magazine consisting of a booklet with detailed information and pictures of Shining Force 1. Now, SF1 has a NEAT cast to it, and I LOVED this little thing--I became an expert on the game, even though I had no Genesis and would play it for the first time a decade later!
The big event, though, came when I was 11. I became frothing-at-the-mouth crazy to obtain Chrono Trigger after I read a review for it in Game Players, where Jeff "Lucky" Lundrigan gave it a 95% and sung its praises like the RPG expert he always was. I got it for Christmas. I played it. I played it again. Again. Again. Again. Again. I suspect I've played and beaten Chrono Trigger more times than I've played all other RPGs put together. Well, maybe not--I've replayed Fallout 2 a shitload, too. But close to it, certainly. Chrono Trigger was the big one--I knew this was the only genre of video game I could ever truly love. And thus was born The RPGenius. Also Ess Tii Eph Yu, later. And after playing 96 RPGs for almost a dozen different game systems released over a period of 20 years, Chrono Trigger is still my favorite RPG of all, and I still consider it the third greatest RPG ever made, just below Suikoden 2 and Grandia 2.
So yes. My story is about as interesting as it is short. You are still ahead, Byuu.

Oh, man, my entry is rather pathetic in comparison.
See, my father had been playing RPGs like FF1 and DQ...er, DW1 ever since I was about four, so I was sorta raised on watching them. DW1 oddly enough I don't remember much about, possibly due to the lack of EVERYTHING, but I did end up remembering bits and pieces of FF1 for over a decade until I rebought it for myself. Reading the old Nintendo Power strategy guide for it over and over again in my youth probably helped, though it did make the game look so much better than it actually was.
Er, yeah. Anyway, the SNES era hit, and my father proudly obtained one early on. Also, various early 1st and 3rd party games, which I believe the SNES had a damn good selection of. One of them was FF4 (which was 2 at the time, and hilariously enough, that whole name switch was even mentioned in Nintendo Power before the game made it over here, so there's REALLY no reason for all the confusion), and I must've watched at least three playthroughs of that game until one christmas, us kids got our own SNES and a copy of FF2/4. Still one of the best christmas gifts I ever got, I think. So, that's really where my start came from. The only other RPGs we really had, though, were Lagoon, Ys 3, and FF:MQ. Lagoon is damn near impossible to this day due to terrible hit detection, Ys 3 is one of my favorite games ever, and FF:MQ I never finished until late last year due to just not caring. I wasn't even aware that FF6 had come out over here until FF7 did, funnily enough, but that was because we no longer had gaming mags coming to us, and as kids, we never could go out and look at games ourselves. That may be why I still find myself merely liking FF6, and not obsessing over it. Too much time with FF4 and no exposure to 6.
So, that's one less rambling entry of mine out of the way.

Am I a dork because I still play pokemon?
First encounter was FFIV, FFII back then. Followed promptly by FFIII. Later on was pokemon and FFVII. Then FFVIII and FFV and FFTA. Since then I've played more RPGs than just Final Fantasy, but those are my roots. My favorite would be Tales of Symphonia, followed by FFIX, and then FFV and FFVI

Lets see......
Playing Shining Force from one of my friends got me addicting to those kinds of games *Wonders why I love FFT and SF so much -.-* And then the FF7 Demo (when PSs were like 1 week old -.-)... got me into that basic RPGs... and the rest stems from random playing of games and emulators ^.^

I started RPGs very late in the game. Unlike many who've probably had their start at the NES or SNES era, I began on the PlayStation/N64 generation. I didn't own an NES or SNES at the time, and even if I did have access to them, it'll be playing Contra III and Super Mario Bros.
Can any guess my first RPG? That's right, Final Fantasy VII. At first I was not very intrigued with games that require me to read walls and walls of text. Can't say that I remembered everything vividly, I was still quite young and very ignorant. What really got me into RPGs was the strategy mini-game at Fort Condor. I would play that game hours on end. It was an amazingly simple game, and a great stepping stone for me to appreciate the turn-based strategy-like combat.
From there, I tried out Final Fantasy Tactics. Obviously a perfect fit into my rise to "RPG fandom." This game though filled with the masterful combat and customization, was really what got me thinking deeper about the storyline in RPGs. It became one of my favorites.
Final Fantasy VIII was next, but I didn't like that game so much. It was recommended by my friend because she said that I shared my name with one of the playable characters in there.
From there, my family moved around a lot, which confined me into playing handhelds more often. Pokemon because one of the games that passes much time, but I really dislike the repetitiveness of it. After being situated, I came back to my PlayStation with Final Fantasy IX, a game that I fell in love with almost immediately.
I'd say those are the main games that brought me into RPGs. Obviously, I've played many more, but those seem to be to the main ones that have convinced me to go back and play the NES and SNES RPGs as well.

You know, I've recently been embroiled in a discussion over FFTA. Two, actually, on the GameFAQs boards. Maybe I'll post some of that here, just to spite you for that. xp Sounds like I'm just an oddball, even in the weird way I found gaming, ha.

Eh, I pretty much played whatever games my brother got. When it comes to RPGs, I think Final Fantasy VI on the SNES was the first I ever played. I don't remember the specific order from there, but it pretty much led towards Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Super Mario RPG, Breath of Fire II, Lufia I & II, and Robotrek. After that, we got the N64 but realized getting a Playstation would probably be a better choice. Instead of trading in the N64 (we had plenty of games for it already), we bought the PS and Final Fantasy VII. Various other RPGs came after that, notable ones include the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Cross, Lunar: Silver Star Story, Arc the Lad Collection, SaGa Frontier 1 & 2, Wild Arms, Tales of Destiny, and a bunch of others I'd rather not list to avoid making this longer than it needs to be. Somewhere along the way, my brother got Baldur's Gate I & II, Planescape: Torment, and Neverwinter Nights. I never really got into them that much, but my brother sure did. I'd give them a try again if I could find them. I got Diablo II and the expansion sometime in that time period as well. The order is really lost to me after that, I got a PS2, a bunch of RPGs, a GCN, borrowed a few RPGs for that, and emulated a bunch of games for the GBA. Some of the GBA games I tried include the Super Robot Wars games (Japanese), Riviera, Fire Emblem, and various Pokemon games.
...And I totally forgot I was in on the Pokemon craze too. Between me and my brother, we ended up with Red, Blue, Yellow, and Stadium for the N64.
EDIT: Forgot to mention I played Bahamut Lagoon and Seiken Densetsu 3 as well.

My cousin was playing FFIV and was being a total dork with Namingway and named his Edge after myself. Soon afterwards, I began picking th game up when he wasn't around and playing my own little save except I didn't want to be a ninja because I thought purple hair was so gay back then. I still do.
There you have it.
But I was never really picky about genre's, really so this being my first RPG wasn't all that big of a milestone as I'd play any game I could get my hands on back then. The only thing that made it remotely important was that it was my first taste of fantasy that was mroe 'mature' than what I had available at the time. I mean, I was 6 at the time it was released and the idea that some of the good guys could die was more than something I could handle at the time. (I literally bawled at Tellah's death and the entire game became my personal vendetta to smash Golbez's face in. Talk about preteen emotional rollercoaster.)
So yeah. FF IV's all to blame.
@ Sio : SRW Games are the s**t! Thanks for reminding me! I played those suckers when they were in Japanese back on the SNES and loved them ever since. I blame them for making me the mecha nerd that I am now.

I blame them for making me the mecha nerd that I am now. It's great that they finally released SRW outside of Japan. Although, I don't think we'll be seeing anymore of that since I think that only happened because they happened to be the Original Generation games. But you know, I don't think I ever finished a single game in the series. I'm much too impatient to figure out all the Japanese, especially when it comes to the Seishin (?) abilities and items.

Hmm...my first RPG...it was Legend of Zelda 1, then Dragon Warrior, then FF1. From there, almost all the RPGs before htey became mainstream I played, including ones few heard about like Soul Blazer, Palidens Quest, Secret of the Stars, Brain Lord, 7th Saga, etc.
From there, I got into RPGs on the Gameboy, Genesis, and Gamegear. After those, I picked up a Playstation and I remember the first RPG I had for that...Chronicles of the Sword and vandal hearts. From there, I started to broaden my collection more until almost all my games are RPGs. If there is one for Playstation up to the Xbox 360, I probably played it or got it.
