Ring Of Honor is one of the leading United States independent promotions of today, and has become the talk of wrestling insiders, critics and die hard fans for presenting innovative, quality action.
From their founding event - The Era of Honor Begins, held in Philadelphia on February 23, 2002 - Ring Of Honor's goal was to present wrestling as a sport, not sports entertainment. In order to achieve this goal, Ring Of Honor was based on the Code Of Honor, which was made up of five Laws Of Honor.
These were the sacred rules that defined Ring Of Honor's product and promoted sportsmanship, respect and honour inside the wrestling ring. It allowed competitors to produce the most athletic matches possible and to insure only the best in ring action with clear winners and losers. Since 2004, the laws were redefined and shortened from five to three:-
- Shake hands with your opponent(s) before and after the match.
- Respect the referees and officials.
- Keep the playing field fair and balanced (no sneak attacks, no interfering, no allowing interference, no doing anything unfair that can turn the tide or effect the outcome of a match since the winners of all Ring of Honor matches should only be determined by true skill).
Similarly, to determine challengers for the Heavyweight Championship, potential contenders are based on their won/lost record, the quality of this opposition during this period, respect shown towards the Code Of Honor and inherent skill.
Aside from having World Heavyweight Championship and Tag-Team Championship titles, there is also a Pure Championship contested under Pure Wrestling Match rules. In this type of match, closed fists are illegal and a wrestler only has three allocated rope breaks in order to break a pin or submission.
Other specialists matches also occur in Ring of Honor including exciting no-tag Scramble Matches, and also the Fight Without Honor where the Code of Honor is out the window. Look out for the Round Robin Challenge, where three people/tag teams wrestle each other in three different matches, with the one with the most victories winning the challenge.
Originally promoting once a month out of Philadelphia, the company now showcases high quality wrestling events two-to three times per month in various cities across the United States including New York, Chicago, Detroit and more, developing a loyal fan base in the country.
Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer rated the Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk sixty-minute bout from "Joe vs. Punk II" October 16, 2004, and the Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi from October 1, 2005, a full five-star award. Meltzer had not rated any wrestling match in the United States the full five-stars since 1997.
Many familiar names have appeared in the promotion since its conception.
Eddie Guerreo wrestled for the promotion in their early events, Matt Hardy wrestled for the company after saying he was a fan of their "more realistic style", as was Mick Foley who also appeared in the promotion. James Gibson won the Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Title before resigning again with World Wrestling Entertainment.
International stars such as Kenta Kobashi, Jushin Liger, The Great Muta and many more have also appeared in the promotion. Legends such as Bobby Heenan, Jim Cornette and Ricky Steamboat are also some of the many names that have also appeared in the company.
Various Ring of Honor wrestlers have also found success elsewhere, most noticeably Paul London in World Wrestling Entertainment, and Samoa Joe in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. The promotion also runs their own ROH Wrestling School, currently headed by Austin Aries, preparing newcomers both inside and outside the ring.
Since our launch, The Wrestling Channel has brought the exclusive Ring Of Honor TV programme to fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Now increased to a two-hour weekly format, the show hosted by Ring of Honor's very own Bobby Cruz includes the latest matches from Ring Of Honor events, highlights from the Straight Shootin' series of interviews and wrestling from their archive events.
